BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- China is launching its sixth national population census Monday, ten years after the last one, as the world's most populous nation seeks a clearer and up-to-date picture of its population. From Nov. 1 to Nov. 10, more than six million census takers are to go door to door and visit over 400 million households across the country, recording family information and finishing the first stage of the census. In order to have more accurate figures, from Nov. 11 to Nov. 30, another round of census-taking will be launched, though on the smaller scale of 1/10000 of the population, officials with the country's National Bureau of Statistics said.Statistics will be calculated in December, with the key data scheduled to be released by the end of April 2011, sources said.In the last census, China's population stood at 1.29533 billion.
BEIJING, Sep. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Thursday it would urge industrial enterprises to produce high-quality products as part of the effort to enhance the image of "made in China."The Ministry would also draw up a blacklist displaying the names of those firms breaching quality-related regulations, said Li Yizhong, Minister of the MIIT.The MIIT would reward those companies that have good records for producing quality products with increased policy and funding support, and punish those with poor quality-control records, said Li at a forum held in Beijing which focused on how to improve the quality and reputation of Chinese industrial products. The MIIT would also move forward on a campaign to allow enterprises to make promises on producing quality products, and work together with quality supervision authorities to incorporate the quality-based credit system of enterprises into the whole social credit system, Li said.During the forum, 156 Chinese firms signed a written proposal "promising to make quality products for the world," and called upon their peers in China to raise the quality of industrial products.

BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Premier, Li Keqiang, said Friday that the population count, the first in 10 years, should be "authentic, accurate and complete", to provide a basis for economic and social development. In a visit to local communities in Beijing, Li said all-out efforts should be enlisted to conduct the census with quality and efficiency.Li noted that some progress has been made, but new problems also emerged as some migrant residents have not been found in their homes. He also said the census has entered a critical phase, and hoped the 6 million census takers could overcome difficulties and carefully carry out the counting.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (4th R) talks with a resident in the Dongcheng District of Beijing, capital of China, Nov. 5, 2010. Along with census takers, Li visited Beijing residents on Friday to inspect China's ongoing sixth population census."Only by getting a clear picture of the population could we better plan and provide people with equal public services in education, health-care, housing and pension," Li said.On Monday China began the once-in-a-decade population count, with 6 million census takers going door-to-door during the next 10 days to document demographic changes in the world's most populous country.Statistics from this census will be calculated in December and the main results will be released by the end of April 2011.
BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and Turkey voiced commitment here on Monday to make joint efforts to crack down on terrorism and separatism."China would stay firm on safeguarding its national interests relating to the national sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping.Xi made the remarks in his meeting with visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, according to a press release from Chinese Foreign Ministry.Xi also expressed his appreciation during the meeting for Turkey's support of China's efforts to combat the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces that threaten to sabotage China's unity. The "East Turkistan" terrorist forces pose threats to the development and stability of northwest China, Xi told Davutoglu, noting that China wants to step up cooperation with Turkey in this regard.A bomb attack on Aug. 19 in Aksu City in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region left eight people dead, including the two attackers, and 15 others injured.Chinese authorities believe the "three forces," an umbrella category for separatists, extremists and terrorists, are responsible for the attacks.Xinjiang -- with 41.5 percent of its population Uygurs, a large Muslim Chinese ethnic group -- is China's frontline against terrorism. The region borders eight central and west Asian countries, many of which have been attacked by terrorist and extremist militant groups.Echoing Xi's views, Davutoglu said Turkey values its ties with China and would unswervingly uphold the one-China policy and crack down on any activities in Turkey that aim to sabotage China's sovereignty and threaten its territorial integrity. The two sides also hailed progress made on bilateral relations, according to the press release, pledging to intensify high level political exchange, expand economic and trade cooperation and strengthen coordination on regional and international issues in an effort to safeguard the interests of the developing countries.Davutoglu's China visit was at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi.
