What once was considered a childhood hobby has becoming a way to earn extra income as an adult.The business of trading, buying and selling sports cards is booming.“Cards that used to be worth to are now selling well upwards of 0,” said Mike Fruitman, owner of Mike’s Stadium Sportscards in Aurora, Colorado.He says sports cards are more popular than ever and compares buying the card of an athlete to buying stock in a company.“We had a card that got pulled last night, it featured autographs from R.J. Barrett and Zion Williamson and we anticipate it’s going to be a ,000 card,” Fruitman said.While many businesses are suffering during the pandemic, Fruitman says this industry is seeing some of its biggest sales since the pandemic began, especially once they moved online.“We had a lot of people who were bored who were looking for entertainment,” he said. “We were going online every day during COVID and our viewership was impressive. We were getting views that we never seen before.”Though buying sports cards in person is still profitable, Fruitman says fewer cards are becoming available.“The amount of people who are opening up card stores or becoming breakers, it’s all just taffy,” he said. “And that taffy is just getting slowly apart. Everybody getting less and less it seems.”Card collectors believe the future of this industry depends on part of the popularity.“Right now, you’ve got videos of Mark Wahlberg opening up boxes with his kids,” Fruitman said. “Steve Aoki is a very large, popular DJ, has opened up his own sports card trading store in L.A.”For now, sports cards are combining entertainment and economics with no signs of slowing down.“It depends on how much you can invest,” one collector said. “But yeah, there’s plenty of money to be made.” 1791

Total sales, including online purchases, is up 13 percent year-over-year.The National Confectioners Association, NCA, represents manufacturers and suppliers of sweet treats, gum, mints and chocolates.Their research showed chocolate is driving the increase. Halloween chocolate sales are up 25 percent over 2019 so far. The NCA released data over the summer showing chocolate was the treat of choice of Americans during the pandemic, with sales increasing five percent March through August over the same time period in 2019. Sales of premium chocolate during that time was up 12 percent year-over-year. Ferrara Candy, which makes Sweetarts, Nerds, Brach’s Candy Corn, Gobstoppers and more, said Halloween sales bring in about .5 billion in sales. In an interview with Axios, CEO Todd Siwak said their company learned a lot from the drop in sales for Easter. This was also the time many stores were closing because of lockdowns to stop the spread of the coronavirus. When Trey Ganem heard about the shootings in Sutherland Springs, he jumped in his car and drove 100 miles to the mourning town.The 46 year-old businessman didn't come just to bear condolences. He had something more tangible to offer: coffins.Ganem runs a casket design company in Edna, Texas, another small town east of Sutherland Springs.His seven employees build personalized coffins that usually sell for about ,500. He is offering to provide free custom-made coffins for the people slain Sunday at First Baptist Church. So far, he's gotten requests to make 15 caskets."When I first started five years ago, children burned in a fire in Edna, Texas. I donated caskets to the family. I knew the kids" he told CNN. "It was the most emotional time in my life."The tragic news out of Sutherland Springs stirred up the same emotions for Ganem."Immediately my heart opened up and I was like 'yes, we can do this,'" he said. "It's a small town. People that felt like they were safe ended up in this tragedy.""What we want to do is start the healing process here," Ganem said. "I want to make sure that we celebrate the lives of the people who were there."Ganem's caskets are always personalized. For some of the younger victims, he plans to paint coffins with princesses and Barbie. The smallest one will fit a 1-year-old girl.He sees his gesture as a way to help grieving families get through their darkest time."We want people to know that we are here for them. While the calls to defund police departments continue, there are some major cities that have already had success in changing police involvement in certain scenarios.That includes programs that limit police interaction and bring in proper reinforcements in situations where mental health is a primary factor."A police officer, a paramedic and a social worker in one vehicle in response to mental health crises as one unit, so they're not waiting for the social worker to arrive or they're not waiting for the paramedic to come," said Kurtis Young, Social Work Director at Parkland Health & Hospital System.Young is talking about cooperation with Dallas police to bring specialized mental health treatment to 911 emergencies. It’s been in place since 2018.It’s critical because people with untreated mental illness are 16 times more likely to be killed during a police encounter. And at least one in four deadly law enforcement encounters involve an individual with serious mental illness.Our partners at Newsy found since January, the "right care" team has handled more than 6,000 calls.
