HARBIN, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Seven people were killed, and 98 more injured after a tornado and hailstorm struck northeast China's Heilongjiang Province Saturday, a local official source said Sunday.Altogether 8,502 people were affected, among whom 3,684 were evacuated, after 28 townships of Suihua City, about 120 km from the provincial capital Harbin, were hit by the violent weather from 3:15 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. Saturday, Suihua's emergency response office said in a statement.A total of 1,015 houses were toppled down in the tornado, and Minqiang Village of Gongrong township was hit the hardest, with the roofs of every house being uplifted, it said.Five people of Beilin District and one from Suihua's Lanxi County were killed. The strong wind tore through eight townships of Hailun city under the jurisdiction of Suihua, killing one more people."I was cooking at the outer room when the tornado came. I attempted to close the window, but the wind was so strong and fast that the house collapsed before I could close it," said Wang Junxia, a woman from Xinquan Village of Beilin District, Suihua City.Wang was temporarily buried beneath bricks, but she managed to crawl out of the rubble and saved by the rescuers.Relief work was underway.Two hundred quilts and more than 500 kg of bread were sent to the affected Beilin District.

BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture Friday ordered local departments to strengthen field management to ensure the summer grain output after prolonged extreme weather in some areas.China faced with a challenging grain situation this summer as persistent cold weather had ravaged major production zones since the winter, which prolonged growing season for wheat and raised the risk of dry hot wind and heavy rains during the harvest time, said Wei Chao'an, Vice Minister of Agriculture.Wei urged authorities to intensify disaster and pest disease prevention, and to quickly harvest in fine weather.According to the ministry, China needs to maintain an annual grain output of 500 million tonnes to feed the nation's 1.3 billion people.China's summer grain output rose six years in a row to top 123.35 million tonnes last year, 2.6 million tonnes more than the previous year. BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China opposes the U.S. decision to set final duties of up to more than 200 percent on imports of steel gratings from China, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday.This came after the U.S. Commerce Department Tuesday announced final anti-dumping duties of 136.76 to 145.18 percent on the gratings to "offset below-market pricing." It also set a countervailing duty of 62.46 percent.MOC said the United States had acted "discriminatorily" in the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation and made the wrong conclusion, and China is dissatisfied and is opposed to this.Such move could hurt the interests of China, which both Chinese government and enterprises would not accept, the ministry said.China urged the U.S. to take effective measures to correct the mistake, it said.According to the U.S. trade remedy procedure, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) will also make its final injury determination about the product soon.If the ITC makes affirmative final determinations that imports of steel gratings from China materially injure, or threaten material injury to, the domestic industry, the Commerce Department will issue anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties orders.In 2009, the United States imposed a series of trade remedy measures on Chinese products, and the value involved was eight times more than that in 2008, the MOC statement said."Such action not only hurts the interests of China, but also has an adverse impact on bilateral economic and trade ties," it said.China hoped the United States could show restraint in using trade remedy measures and act to fight trade protectionism, it said.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has allocated 200 million yuan (29.3 million U.S. dollars) from the central fiscal for disaster relief in quake-hit Qinghai Province, the Ministry of Finance said late Wednesday.The fund was to support relief efforts including evacuation, resettlement, medical treatment and epidemic prevention.A 7.1-magnitude quake hit the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai early Wednesday morning, leaving at least 400 people dead and 10,000 others injured.
