Some people see the landmark decision out of Oklahoma as a turning point in the nation's fight against opioids.A judge is ordering drug maker Johnson & Johnson to pay over half a billion dollars for its role in the crisis. One emergency room doctor hopes their unique program combined with court battles against drug companies might finally help fix the crisis.“Nationally this is a huge epidemic,” says Dr. Ashley Curry, an emergency psychiatrist with Denver Health. It's estimated that over 130 people die every single day from an opioid overdose. And even for those who recognize they may have a problem, it can take months to get help and a prescription for the medication they might need to help them.Curry is part of the team of doctors at Denver Health's "Treatment on Demand" program.“We recognized that there was really a gap in when people were ready to start treatment and how quickly they could access that treatment, so we were trying to fill that gap,” Curry says.Their solution? Same day treatment.“Day or night, 24/7, our emergency room is open and people can come in and start on medication-assisted treatment,” Curry says.About 300 patients so far have used the hospital's emergency department for treatment, and about 70 percent have continued with clinic follow-ups.Curry hopes that Monday’s verdict against drug maker Johnson & Johnson means the tide might finally be turning.“I think that verdict really helps represent like the collective consciousness about how problematic opioid use has become for our country,” Curry says. “We are recognizing this is a major problem and it's a public health crisis. 1645

A kidnapping victim chewed through a telephone cord to escape captivity recently, according to police records. Phoenix police report that on August 23 a man, later identified as 54-year-old Michael Darrell Thorning went to a motel room near 51st Avenue and McDowell Road. He went to a room where the victim had allowed him to spend the night a few days prior due to the excessive heat. After using the phone, Thorning allegedly pulled a box cutter out and threatened the victim. They fought over the box cutter, but soon Thorning had the victim tied to a chair with a phone cord and blindfolded him. Thorning reportedly stole the victim's cash, debit card, and PIN. Thorning then withdrew 0 in cash from nearby ATMs, police say. According to court records, the victim "was able to free himself by chewing through a cord." He then went to the motel front desk for help. Police distributed pictures of Thorning taken from the ATM cameras to nearby businesses. A few days later police got a tip from a motel manager in the area, that Thorning was in their parking lot. Upon his arrest, Thorning allegedly admitted to tying up the victim, stealing his debit card and withdrawing money. He has been charged with kidnapping and robbery. 1250

When Jill Promoli lost her 2-year-old son, Jude, to the flu, she posted about it on her Facebook page. Then, she was attacked by anti-vaxxers. "I got a lot of people accusing me of actually murdering Jude and using flu as an excuse to cover up my crime,” Promoli says. Anti-vaxxers said she'd caused her son's death by giving him a flu shot. Some even going so far as to say she'd intentionally killed her son. "The first time it made me feel really sick,” she recalls. “The idea that somebody could even suggest that I would do something that would hurt any of them." She's not the only one under attack. At a recent CDC meeting, the organization brought in extra security, and doctors who say vaccines save lives have received death threats. On Facebook, anti-vaxxers called for Dr. Richard Pan, a pediatrician and California state senator, to be shot. One wrote, "I hope they stone you to death." That's why one mom, Erin Costello, uses a fake Facebook account to spy on dozens of anti-vaccination groups. She says when a child dies, that’s when anti-vaxxers come together to harass people online. "They ask the other group members, 'Come on. Let's go hit them with our truth, with our information. Let's go educate them.' Basically, let's go harass them," she says. When Costello sees comments like that, she warns other parents. But Larry Cook, who leads the anti-vaccine movement, says of the millions of comments on his Facebook group each month, those about parents who lose children after being vaccinated are a small number. Cook says anti-vaxxers get harassed by pro-vaxxers. As for Promoli, she says she's fighting back against the harassment following her son’s death. She’s launching a campaign to encourage people to get flu shots and remains determined not to let the anti-vaxxers stop her."I don't want anyone to ever lose their child again," Promoli says. 1886
