HAIKOU, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- More than 130,000 people were evacuated after more than 550 villages were submerged by floods by Wednesday afternoon in southern China's island province of Hainan, local authorities said late Wednesday.The torrential rains are the heaviest in Hainan since 1961, a spokesman for the provincial government said.Water levels at five reservoirs are now in danger of crossing their limits because of heavy rains across the island. Rescuers are working to reinforce them, the official added.The floods have damaged two highways, two national routes, eight provincial routes along with several other roads.So far, no casualties have been reported among tourists, the official said.Torrential rains have battered many areas of Hainan for six days. Several cities, including the provincial capital of Haikou and the beach resort of Sanya, have also suffered flooding. The four cities of Qionghai, Wanning, Ding'an and Haikou were most seriously hit. Parts of the island received an average 324.7 mm of rainfall.Hainan Island is a famous tropical tourist resort and attracts millions of visitors every year. BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The value of yuan, China's currency Renminbi, hit new high against U.S. dollar Monday as the central parity rate of the yuan was set at 6.6732 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.Monday's central parity rate beat the previous record of 6.6830 on Oct. 8.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Monday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by about 2.26 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.China would continue reform of the formation mechanism of its currency exchange rate to improve its flexibility, but will do so in a gradual way, Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of the People's Bank of China, China's central bank, said in Washington on Sunday.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a new national campaign to crack down on violations of intellectual property rights (IPRs) and on the production and distribution of fake and shoddy products.The decision was made at a regular meeting of the State Council Tuesday, which was presided over by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. The campaign will last for half a year, beginning from the end of October.The campaign will target pirated publications, software products, DVDs, designs and other products with IPRs, as well as violations of registered trademarks and patents, both at the production and distribution levels.The campaign will also enhance China's scrutiny over the import and export of fake goods and mete out stern punishment to businesses involved in the import and export of such goods.The campaign will target Internet piracy and the sale of pirated and fake goods via the Internet.Additionally, the State Council directed all government agencies to purchase only authorized software and their upgraded versions.At the Tuesday meeting, a draft regulation on gas use in urban areas was also passed in a bid to secure gas supplies and eliminate safety risks.

Is it because they resent China's development path and hate China's political system?"
