BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China has vowed to continue to develop its human rights dialogue with Norway after the two nations concluded their 13th annual Roundtable on Human Rights and the Rule of Law here Friday.Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin briefed Norwegian representatives on Chinese achievements in improving people's livelihoods, reinforcing democracy, and constructing legal systems.The human rights roundtable between China and Norway is a model for countries with different social systems and from different civilizations to conduct equal and friendly dialogue, Liu said.China hopes to strengthen dialogue and exchange with other countries on human rights issues on the basis of equality and mutual respect to increase understanding, expand agreement and jointly promote the healthy development of human rights internationally.Norwegian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Gry Larsen spoke highly of China's remarkable achievements with human rights, saying the two nations have conducted stable and effective cooperation in the field of human rights.The Norway-China roundtable has served as a helpful platform for the two nations to discuss human rights issues and is conducive to the growth of bilateral ties, he said.Larsen said Norway will work with China to further promote the roundtable.During the two-day roundtable, nearly 70 officials and scholars from the two sides exchanged views on the rights of workers, prisoners and minorities.Liu and Larsen also discussed human rights, covering such topics as freedom of speech, the rights of minorities and the role of non-governmental organizations.China and Norway started discussing human rights issues in an informal setting in 1993. In 1997 the first formal Roundtable on Human Rights and the Rule of Law was held.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will take an objective, rational and just view towards China's national defense policy and the development of its armed forces, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here on Thursday.Qin's comment came in response to a question on China's attitude towards a U.S. military officer's remarks on China's military development.The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said in a speech to the Asia Society's annual dinner that he was now "genuinely concerned" about "the gap as wide as what seems to be forming between China's stated intent and its military programs."Responding to the remarks, Qin urged the U.S. side to do more to build military relations with China, rather than harming them, so to ensure regional peace, stability and security.Qin said the sole purpose of China's defense policy is self-defense and its military is being developed in a peaceful way.China's development will not pose a threat to any country and anyone, he stressed, adding "We will not threaten and invade others."China opposes hegemonism, he said. China is still a developing country, and even if it becomes a developed country in the future, it will still stick to the road of peaceful development and will not seek hegemony."It is the solemn commitment made by the Chinese government to the outside world," he said.

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday concluded his two-day official visit to Bangladesh and started his trip to Laos, the second leg of his four-nation tour.In Dhaka on Tuesday, Xi met separately with the country's opposition leader, parliament speaker and president.In talks with Khaleda Zia, chairperson of Bangladesh's main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Xi lauded what Zia has done to promote the Sino-Bangladeshi relationship.He said China appreciates very much Bangladesh's precious support on issues concerning China's core interests like the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.He said China supports Bangladesh's economic development and will continue to do its best to help the south Asian country.Zia said China is a close and friendly neighbor of Bangladesh. YICHUN, Heilongjiang, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The government of Yichun, a city in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, has corrected Tuesday night's plane crash death toll to 42, saying one dead body that was torn apart in the disaster was formerly counted as two.A local publicity official said earlier on that 43 dead bodies were retrieved.According to the death roll released by the city government, the dead were aged roughly from 12 to 55, calculated from their birth dates indicated in their ID numbers. Among them, however, was a Chinese holding a passport and three crew members whose ID numbers were not available.Rescuers wrapped up the bodies early on Wednesday and have transported them to the city's funeral homes for families to identify them.The ERJ-190 jet, manufactured by the Brazilian aerospace conglomerate Embraer with maximum passenger capacity of 108, crashed near the runaway of Lindu airport of Yichun at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday, some 40 minutes after it took off from the provincial capital Harbin.Ninety-one passengers, including five children, and five crew members boarded the plane, sources with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said.Officials in Yichun confirmed a group of officials from Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security were also on board, including a vice minister and six division chiefs. Most of them survived with injuries, and the vice minister Sun Baoshu was in critical condition.
