As nearly 200,000 people remain under evacuation order from threat of wildfire, some of the millions of people in Northern California on track to get their electricity back may not have power restored before another possible round of shut-offs and debilitating winds.Pacific Gas & Electric Co. has notified more than 1.2 million people that they may have their electricity shut off for what could be the third time in a week and the fourth time this month.Meanwhile, more than 2.4 million people who lost electricity over the weekend were awaiting restoration as hurricane-force winds whipped through the state, fueling a wildfire in Sonoma County as smaller spot fires cropped up.Fire conditions statewide made California "a tinderbox," said Jonathan Cox, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Of the state's 58 counties, 43 were under red flag warnings for high fire danger Sunday.Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in response to the wildfires, powered by gusts that reached more than 102 mph (164 kph). The Kincade Fire in Sonoma County, which started Wednesday, grew to 85 square miles (220 square kilometers), destroyed 94 buildings and was threatening 80,000 buildings, state fire authorities said Sunday night. In the San Francisco Bay Area, two grass fires briefly halted traffic on an interstate bridge. The flames came dangerously close to homes in Vallejo. Another grass fire closed a stretch of interstate that cut through the state capital as smoke obstructed drivers. In the south, a wildfire in the Santa Clarita area near Los Angeles destroyed 18 structures. As of Sunday, the Tick Fire was 70% contained. Early Monday, a brush fire broke out along the west side of Interstate 405, north of Sunset Boulevard and near the Getty Center in Southern California. The Los Angeles Fire Department called the fire "a very dynamic situation due to high winds" and issued mandatory evacuation orders for people living from the top of Mandeville Canyon Road down to Sunset east of the freeway. To prevent power lines from sparking in high winds and setting off more blazes up north, PG&E said Sunday that power is out to 965,000 customers and another 100,000 have lost electricity because of strong gusts, bringing the number of residents impacted by blackouts to nearly 2.7 million people. The biggest evacuation was in Northern California's Sonoma County where 180,000 people were told to pack up and leave. 2480

Brother and sister Paul and Angelica Gallegos have spent a lot more time together this past school year. That’s because their school district, 27J outside Denver, became the first district in a major metropolitan area to switch to a four-day school week. And at first, it was a scary idea for mom Crystal.“I was a little freaked out,” Gallegos said. She had to convince her employer to let her work from home, since her kids would now be there every Monday. So far, she says the new school schedule hasn’t been that hard to get used to.“I like it, but that’s because I get to spend time with my kids,” she said.Every Monday they’ve come to a local state park where the kids volunteer.“We feed the animals we feed the birds,” said 12 year old Angelica. “On certain days we take kids on trail walks.”But asked if they prefer the new shorter weeks in class?“[I’d] go back to the old way,” says 9-year-old Paul. “I’d rather have school Mondays then stay an extra hour.”To make their weeks shorter, the four classroom days have to be longer. And then there’s homework.“This year, we did almost two hours of homework a night ,” said mom Crystal. “And then she plays softball, so that on top of practice, on top of—it was just a lot for her this year.”The Roberts family just down the block has mixed feelings. Kendra, 12, who uses the extra day to hangout with friends, grins from ear to ear when asked if she likes it.“Yea,” she says smiling.Mom Alecia Roberts sees pros and cons.“We have more family time on the weekends because then we can focus on other things during Mondays,” Roberts said. “But I still work on Mondays.”District superintendent Chris Fiedler says the biggest reason for the change was to attract more qualified teacher applicants. And so far, he says, its worked.“[For] elementary teaching positions a good pool [of applicants] would have been 40-50, and we were seeing pools of over 100,” Fiedler said.He says they’re also more experienced applicants. The district will soon head into their second year of a three-year trial, but it could be here to stay.“It’s really been a useful tool,” Fiedler said. The district has offered daycare for every Monday. 2183

An inmate was mistakenly released from the troubled Cuyahoga County Jail last week, in spite of the inmate telling jailers that he wasn’t supposed to be released. Not only did that inmate tell at least one jailer he was supposed to stay locked up, Administrative Judge John Russo said he also called a judge's bailiff and let him know about the mistake too.The confusion that led the jail to mistakenly release Fransisco Cruz appears to once again stem from an inmate with multiple cases in the system at the same time.Court records show Cruz was sentenced to 18 months in prison in October 2017 on domestic violence, drug, escape and theft charges.Nine months later, in July 2018, Cruz was released from prison and put into a transitional control program, a type of supervised release. While out, Cruz was arrested again on drug charges in May of this year and put back behind bars to finish his sentence. That prison sentence ended on October 2.The same day, Cruz was sentenced on the May drug charge.Judge Peter Corrigan ordered Cruz spend time in a substance abuse facility and ordered the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department to take him there. What happened next is still something jail administrators are trying to figure out.A spokeswoman said the state notified the jail that Cruz's sentence was over. He was released Friday and told to report to his parole officer. That’s when Cruz told a jailer they were supposed to take him to inpatient treatment, Russo told News 5 investigators. But that didn't happen.Cruz then called Corrigan's courtroom to tell the judge what happened, Russo said. A bailiff called the treatment center, but they said they could only take Cruz if the sheriff's department brought him.The county said the 36-year-old was taken back into custody yesterday when he showed up to meet his parole officer. This is at least the fourth mistaken release from the jail since spring. In all four cases, records show the inmate involved had multiple cases moving through the court system at the same time. This article was originally written by Scott Noll for WEWS. 2095

Boeing's 737 MAX jets will remain grounded for weeks after the Federal Aviation Administration said Monday afternoon that the plane maker continues to work on a software fix.Boeing had said it would submit the fix to the FAA last week, and it had gathered hundreds of industry representatives at its Seattle-area facilities last Wednesday to demonstrate the software changes. But the FAA said Monday that the company concluded "additional work" is needed."The FAA expects to receive Boeing's final package of its software enhancement over the coming weeks for FAA approval," the agency said in a statement. "Time is needed for additional work by Boeing as the result of an ongoing review of the 737 MAX Flight Control System to ensure that Boeing has identified and appropriately addressed all pertinent issues."Boeing acknowledged the new timeline, saying in a statement that the software change would be "completed in the coming weeks." It did not say why the timeline had changed."Safety is our first priority, and we will take a thorough and methodical approach to the development and testing of the update to ensure we take the time to get it right," the company said.American Airlines said Monday afternoon that it was aware the MAX "may be further delayed" in returning to service. It has been forced to cancel dozens of flights daily while the planes await a fix.American 1391
