SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of people lost power in Liberty Station and Point Loma Friday as a result of what San Diego Gas and Electric identified as an electrical problem.A witness reported an underground explosion and smoke coming from a manhole cover about 2 p.m. at 2230 Truxtun Road at Womble Road. The location is near the Trader Joe’s and Rock Church.1,200 customers lost power about the same time as the manhole report. SDG&E said the problem was electrical but did not provide details. SDG&E restored power about 4 p.m.Students at nearby High Tech High School exited the building away from the emergency location as a precaution.The power outages led some nearby businesses to close. 10News talked with a customer of The Lot movie theater who said the power shut down during a screening of the new Avengers movie. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of officers in San Diego County have been convicted of crimes and some are still on the job. That's according to a new investigation by several newsrooms across the state, including the Voice of San Diego.A few examples of convicted cops include the case of former SDPD Sergeant Oscar Armenta who pleaded guilty to attacking his girlfriend but didn’t get any jail time. Former SDPD Officer Anthony Arevalos was convicted of groping women and trying to elicit sexual favors during traffic stops. Married ex-SDPD Officers Bryce and Jennifer Charpentier admitted to stealing and taking prescription drugs while on the clock. Other officers like Karen Almos and Jeffrey Blackford got DUIs and are reportedly still working for SDPD, according to a massive new database of convicted law enforcement officers.Complete Coverage: The Transparency ProjectThe database is a collaborative project from several news organizations including the Voice of San Diego, which was coordinated by the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley and the Bay Area News Group. The project was born after an open-records request last year shed light on a list that came from the California Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training which revealed close to 12,000 state officers and applicants who’ve been found guilty of various offenses. According to the database, of the more than two dozen convicted San Diego County officers, the majority, 17, were from San Diego Police Department. There were six officers from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, two from Chula Vista Police Department, one from Oceanside Police Department, one from Carlsbad Police Department and one from San Diego City Schools Police.Monday, an SDPD spokesperson confirmed with 10News that he told the Voice of San Diego, in part, "Cops make mistakes like everyone else and local jurisdictions should be able to determine for themselves whether that person is worthy of continuing to carry a badge." 2003

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Heavy rain brought lightning and flooding to some areas of San Diego, submerging vehicles in some parts of the county.In Coronado, several vehicles became submerged on 1st St. soon after the rain began to pour. In one instance, a local helped to push a stalled vehicle out of the flooded area. Other vehicles had to wait until the water subsided in order to drive out of the area.Signs were eventually posted along 1st St. warning drivers of flooded areas. SATURDAY FORECASTElsewhere Friday, scattered lightning and thunder prompted delays to SDSU football's?game at SDCCU Stadium. In Oceanside lightning struck a palm tree, setting it on fire, viewer video showed.Power outages also hit areas of San Diego, including a major one in North San Diego County. Hail was also spotted in downtown San Diego.Scattered showers are expected throughout the county Saturday, tapering off in the evening hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hawaii recently passed a ban on sunscreens containing certain chemicals deemed harmful to their coral reefs.With more than 70 miles of coastline in San Diego County, the question of whether a similar ban could affect our region has been brought to light.The chemicals in question are oxybenzone or octinoxate, both of which are found in many commonly purchased sunscreens.RELATED: What ingredients to avoid, look for in reef-safe sunscreensA study by the Haereticus Environmental Laboratory found the chemicals seep into young coral and lead to coral bleaching, which occurs when an increase in sea temperatures kills the algae that grow inside coral, turning reefs white. This eliminates other nutrients that sustain marine life.Researchers say 14,000 tons of sunscreen lotion gets into reefs around the world every year.We asked our 10News Facebook fans how they would feel about a similar ban in California.
