CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The purchase of a dream home nearly turned into a nightmare for a Carlsbad family, as they narrowly avoided a costly escrow scam.In late July, Greg Shoman and his wife were just days from closing on a four-bedroom home when he thought he got an email from his escrow officer with wiring instructions for the down payment to be sent that day. In the email, the escrow officer said she was busy and could only talk by email, before sending him a calculation of the closing costs. "You see so many emails and documents during the process, and you start to become numb to it ... Everything on the email - from the masthead to the signature - looked like the emails we had been receiving from the escrow company during the process," said Shoman.Shoman went to his bank to wire the money. His bank happened to be the same bank the money was to be transferred to, and the bank confirmed the routing number matched a non-business account in Wisconsin, not a California escrow company. After a call to the real escrow company, he learned the emails were fakes."Surprised and angry, and then ultimately relieved you didn't give away several hundred thousand dollars," said Shoman. Shoman isn't alone. According to the FBI, Americans lost 0 million to real estate fraud last year. In many cases, the scammer identifies pending home sales through the MLS and real estate sites and hacks the emails of someone involved in the sale, before sending out false wiring instructions."Be aware, be vigilant, and call your escrow company. Don't be afraid to triple check," said Shoman's realtor, Ilana Huff of Pacific Sotheby's.Shoman says the FBI is investigating his case. He says a closer look at the emails revealed the email address in the scam message was different from the email address of the real escrow officer. 1838

CHARLESTON, SC -- Jacob Kosinski has a lot to celebrate after graduating from his Christian-based home-school program summa cum laude with a 4.89 grade-point average. His mom, Cara Koscinski planned a graduation party for her 18-year-old son and ordered a cake from Publix for the big occasion. Koscinski ordered the cake online and provided the information she wanted on the cake. She wanted it to say "Congrats Jacob! Summa Cum Laude class of 2018." When she typed the message into the cake message option, the Publix website didn't' like the middle word in the phrase.The website put three hyphens in its place, so the finished cake read "Congrats Jacob! Summa --- Laude, class of 2018."Koscinski explained the meaning of the word in the special instructions box on the website and ordered the cake. She even pointed out that "the system is mistaking the word 'cum' for something inappropriate vs. Latin."Koscinski sent her husband to pick up the cake before the celebration, and when he returned from the store, the lines remained in place of "Cum." Koscinski shared her frustration on Facebook and said her son, Jacob, "was humiliated!!!" "Shame on Publix for turning an innocent Latin phrase into a total embarrassment for having to explain to my son and others (including my 70-year-old mother) about this joke of a cake."Koscinski called Publix and explained the situation to the assistant manager. Publix offered to give them a replacement cake but Cara declined. Instead, the grocery store gave Cara a refund for the cake and a store gift card.  1608

"I think it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world.”Multiple publications, including Conde Nast Traveler, have ranked it as the number one small city to visit in the U.S. Seventh generation Charlestonian Michael Trouche is an expert on tourism in the city. He’s the owner of Charleston Footprint Walking Tours.“We are unique to America," Trouche said. "We have so many things here that are appealing. We’ve got this magnificent, beautiful, well-preserved city in this large contiguous area of about four-square miles, this wonderful climate with all kinds of blooming gardens and trees. You’ve got Charleston right on the waterfront, right on the Atlantic Ocean… and of course... a great southern hospitality. Charleston has always been known as being a very friendly city, so people just love it. People keep coming here and they keep coming back.”However, the past eight months and counting have been a nightmare for business and restaurant owners like Eli Hyman of Hyman’s Seafood.“It’s kind of spooky quiet... it’s eerie," Hyman said. "Because normally these streets would be bustling in the fall. It’s beautiful weather.”Like most places across the country, the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the city hard. Robert Smith is the owner of a local marketing company called The Chart Group.“It almost was like overnight," Smith said. "First we heard about this virus overseas, and next thing you know we’re shutting our city down.”Considering the Chart Group offers video production and content creation for Charleston businesses, Smith depends on a thriving tourism industry. As everything shut down, his clients could no longer pay for his services. He too had to furlough employees.“Tourism within the last 30 or 40 years has become a major component," Trouche said. "It’s multi-millions of dollars in revenue for the city and for businesses and so it is a big player economically in Charleston.”Some businesses have closed forever and those that have survived had to let go of staff.“We had a staff of close to 200," Hyman said. "We’re down to about 130. We have a significant amount of them – about 40 or 45 – that have been with me for 15 years, so I have no choice but to keep my doors open. I’m going to do it for them.”Walking tours around the city only takes one person and Trouche says even that has been a struggle.“I typically give six day’s worth of tours and many times twice a day. I’ve gotten to the point where I may be giving two or three tours in an entire week.”Thankfully, there is hope. Business owners say tourism dollars are coming back as restrictions have been lifted and people are feeling more comfortable leaving home, especially on weekends. According to Erin Francis-Cummings, the president and CEO of Destination Analysts, research confirms that’s likely true.“Just last week when we surveyed American travelers, one in five said they felt like people in their personal networks were traveling more. They feel like they’ve observed that,” Francis-Cummings said.As we learn more about the virus and what can best protect us, Francis-Cummings says more people are feeling safe about traveling. However, if tourism businesses want to do well, she says they need to show that they care about the safety of their customers.“If they have the protocols in place and people feel safe, they will get business.”Francis-Cummings predicts there will be even more travelers once we have a vaccine. In the meantime, Robert says many are eager for another stimulus package from the government.“Helping these businesses through the pandemic and getting back on their feet in our opinion is the most important thing,” Smith said.Taking it day by day, business owners say they pray they’ll come out of this strong.“With God’s good grace we’ll get out of this soon," Hyman said. CARLSBAD, Calif. (CNS) -- Police Friday announced the arrest of a 54-year-old Poway man on suspicion of killing a young woman in Carlsbad 33 years ago.James Charles Kingery was arrested Wednesday in connection with the sexual assault and murder of 26-year-old Julia Hernandez-Santiago, whose body was found on Oct. 10, 1987, on an ivy-covered embankment in the 2100 block of Alga Road, west of Alicante Road, Carlsbad police spokesman Jodee Reyes said.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death was asphyxiation due to strangulation."Investigators were able to recover several pieces of key evidence at the time; however, a suspect was never identified," Reyes said.Over the next three decades, detectives continued to follow leads and technology eventually helped reveal new investigative angles to probe.Last March, San Diego County sheriff's deputies arrested a man on narcotics and weapons violations and took a DNA sample from him, as required by law based on his alleged offenses, Reyes said. Last May, the sheriff's crime lab notified Carlsbad police that the DNA samples from the 1987 murder case were a match for Kingery.Kingery was booked into the San Diego Central jail around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of murder, according to jail records. He was being held without bail pending his arraignment, scheduled for July 31.A motive for the killing has not been disclosed. 1428

(KGTV) - The U.S Border Patrol arrested in Campo Wednesday a Mexican citizen who they say had close to 10 pounds of cocaine in his car.Agents at the westbound Interstate 8 checkpoint referred a silver 2007 Volkswagen Jetta to a secondary inspection about 1:30 p.m.A Border Patrol K-9 sniffed the vehicle and uncovered the drug bundles. They were found in a modified compartment inside the dashboard, agents said.Four packages, weighing a total of 9.88 pounds, tested positive for cocaine and were valued at approximately ,800.The unidentified 25-year-old driver was arrested. Agents said he had a Border Crosser Card, which is available for citizens of Mexico who travel to the U.S.Border Patrol agents turned over the narcotics the Drug Enforcement Administration. 790
