SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The San Diego Police Department's Eastern Division opened up their “Trunk or Treat Haunted Station” to more than 500 kids the Skyline neighborhood. Officers and community members helped to transform the station, and students from Morse High School played monsters in the haunted house. The tradition began four years ago, with the goal of connecting the community with law enforcement.  “It’s so safe. It’s so fun. The kids are having a blast,” one woman said, as her cousin played with the police equipment on display.Outside the station, sponsors gave out candy and snow cones. Officers allowed Trick-Or-Treaters to tour the inside of a SWAT vehicle and ride a police motorcycle. “When I was a child, we didn’t have a place like this to come to,” one woman said, as her grandchildren played inside the SWAT vehicle. “As I was growing up, they would say 'Don’t eat the candy. Things are unsafe.' But we’re so glad to be here because we know our kids are safe here.”Residents said this was exactly what the community needed-- An experience that not only keeps the streets safe, but builds good relationships between residents and law enforcement. “A lot of the kids said, 'I want to be a police officer when I grow up.' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mountain biker wants to warn people about visiting the Tecolote Canyon Nature Trail. He tells 10News he had a disturbing encounter there with a man carrying a knife. Mike Hayes was feet from a trail entrance in Tecolote Canyon off Mt Acadia Boulevard when he was approached by a strange man on Sunday. Hayes says he was walking his bike near the man - a transient in his 20s, dressed in camouflage - when the man suddenly came forward and asked if Hayes was stalking him.  When Hayes said no, the man got agitated and had a look with "Charles Manson eyes." "Next thing you know, he has a knife in his hand and an angry look," said Hayes. "And he says 'If you follow me, I'm going to cut you.'"Hayes says he backed away slowly, got on his bike and rode off, while the man walked his bike away.     875

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -The extended patio seating in the Gaslamp Quarter is here to stay for now, according to the Gaslamp Quarter Association.Thanks to a special events permit, as long as social distancing is required, restaurants will overflow into the streets with patio dining Thursday through Saturday each weekend through the end of the year.Manager at The Field Phil Nestor was thrilled to see how busy it was Saturday, saying the patios made a "100%, a million times over," difference to recuperating after being shut down during the pandemic.He said people feel more comfortable sitting outside, and diners said they enjoyed the atmosphere."I think it's actually a pretty good idea, it reminds me of my time in Europe so I think it's pretty cool," Luis Morales said.Fifth Avenue shut down between G and L Streets Thursday through Saturday to make way for the patios, and was slow to start."I think the first day everyone was finding their feet I guess, they were seeing how many tables they could put in their area," Nestor said.By Saturday nearly a dozen restaurants expanded into the streets.Morales said they enjoyed themselves, "we came out to get together with the boys and just finally get a sense of normalcy."Right now normalcy comes with hand sanitizing stations at each table and masks while you're waiting to be seated."I always take my precautions," one diner said. The man said he came down from Los Angeles to celebrate his birthday and felt safer in San Diego compared to up north where Orange County reduced their mask policy to "strongly recommended."Last weekend images of crowds not social distancing, or wearing masks in the Gaslamp Quarter garnered harsh words from County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. He said earlier this week targeted enforcement would ensure this doesn't happen again.Nestor said the weight falls on restaurants to enforce the county's policies, "we're responsible for our patio and the surrounding areas and making sure people are in the line wearing masks and they're social distancing.""You can't just run into the street and tell someone to do something but you're doing your best and I think most people whether they're drunk or not, I think taking responsibility for themselves too which is a good thing to see," he said.He and other businesses are hopeful as long as the patio dining is successful and they keep everyone healthy this could become a more permanent fixture."I hope it becomes a permanent thing, a lot of the restaurants do," Nestor said, hopeful business will continue to climb, helping them recover from the pandemic. 2592

(KGTV) — Thirty-four people were arrested after Border Patrol agents intercepted two smuggling boats in less than 24 hours.The first boat was spotted around 11:15 a.m. on Sunday by a Department of Homeland Security aircraft. Less than an hour later, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Air and Marine Operations agents were able to stop the vessel about one-mile southeast of Point Loma.Twenty-one people were arrested, including four who are alleged smugglers — two of which are U.S. citizens. The remaining 17 people on board were Mexican nationals. Once the boat made it to shore, 14 people began running from Border Patrol agents. Thirteen people were captured, but one got away. Eleven of the arrested were Mexican nationals and two were Chinese Nationals. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple is paying Intel billion for the chip maker's smartphone modem division in a deal driven by the upcoming transition to the next generation of wireless technology.The agreement announced Thursday comes three months after Apple ended a long-running dispute with one of Intel's rivals, Qualcomm. That ensured Apple would have a pipeline of chips it needs for future iPhones to work on ultrafast wireless networks known as 5G.The Apple-Qualcomm truce prompted Intel to abandon its attempts to make chips for 5G modems, effectively putting that part of its business up for grabs.Once the sale is completed later this year Apple will be picking up about 2,200 Intel employees and 17,000 wireless technology patents. Barring any complications, the deal is expected to close sometime between October and December.Apple's purchase of Intel's smartphone modem patents and other technology could bolster its attempt to build its own line 5G chips and lessen its dependence on Qualcomm. The Cupertino, California, has hammered out a licensing agreement with Qualcomm that carries through April 2025, with an option to extend for an additional two years after that.Qualcomm is a pivotal supplier in the rollout of 5G, particularly in the U.S. That's because President Donald Trump's administration has blacklisted another key 5G supplier, Huawei, as part of its trade war with China.So far, 5G connections are only available in a few cities in the U.S., but they are expected to become more prevalent by next year.
