Months after removing all assault rifles from all 732 of its stores, Dick's Sporting Goods is considering removing all hunting gear from its stores, company CEO Edward Stack said in a conference call, according to CBS News. Stack said on the call that Dick's will test the concept at 10 locations. The 10 locations selected were ones where hunting goods were not selling well. "We'll have to wait and see how the 10-store test does," Stack said on the call. CBS reported that Stack added that there are a number of additional locations where selling hunting goods are difficult. The additional space could be used for Dick's to sell higher-margin items, such as outerwear and clothing for team sports, especially baseball and soccer. CBS reported that Dick's adjusted same-store sales were down 3.9 percent in the third quarter of 2018 compared to 2017. Following Wednesday's announcement, stocks for Dick's rose 2.4 percent, showing that investors welcomed the news.  1026

Nearly 800 nurses were on a picket line Tuesday in Pennsylvania. The nurses work at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, near Philadelphia, and they say they are walking off the job to fight for their patients.At issue is the hospital’s contract with the nurse’s union. The nurses want a new contract with higher wages and safeguards for patient safety.The nurses say they are caring for more patients during the coronavirus pandemic than they should, and that is putting patients at risk.“Safe staffing is the main issue in our negotiation--it's why we organized last year in the first place,” says Kathy McKamey R.N., who works on St Mary's MG2 unit and has been at the hospital for 10 years, said in a statement provided by the union.The hospital’s owner, Trinity Health, said the union rejected a contract last week that included higher wages.Hospitals in the Philadelphia area told the Philadelphia Inquirer that they would hire replacement nurses to work if the union goes on strike."We respect the union members’ right to strike, and we remain committed to negotiating in good faith to reach agreement on a fair, consistent and sustainable initial contract for St. Mary nurses. Her father is a resident at Parkview at Paradise Village in National City. She was happy the health of her father - Clyde Hasemeyer - was being protected, but she knows her dad."My dad is very social. He loves getting visitors, and telling jokes, playing games, singing and laughing. I was really concerned he wouldn't have any visitors," said Martinson.She and her family call often and write letters, but a few days ago, Clyde got a letter from someone he doesn't know. Clyde, a Koren War Marine Veteran, received a letter from 14-year-old Christian Hughes.10news caught up with Christian and his mother Mariana a few days ago as they began a letter-writing campaign for local senior care facilities. Their idea caught fire on social media. Hundreds of letters and cards have started to arrive at nursing homes, ending up in the hands and hearts of people like Clyde."My dad was so happy. He laughed and enjoyed it so much. He asked the caregiver to tape them up on his wall, so he could look at them all the time. Just makes him feel so nice not to be so isolated away from everyone," said Martinson.It's a feeling of not being alone during a time of staying apart. NASA said that astronauts successfully grew radishes on board the International Space Station for the first time in NASA history.The plants are being placed in cold storage to be examined when astronauts return from the space station in 2021.NASA says that the radishes reached maturity in 27 days, and are fully edible and nutritious.“Radishes are a different kind of crop compared to leafy greens that astronauts previously grew on the space station, or dwarf wheat which was the first crop grown in the APH,” said Nicole Dufour, NASA APH program manager at Kennedy Space Center. “Growing a range of crops helps us determine which plants thrive in microgravity and offer the best variety and nutritional balance for astronauts on long-duration missions.”Growing plants on board could be an important step in order to send astronauts to Mars and beyond.
