Wildlife biologists with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida shared a shocking python find in Collier-Seminole State Forest on Thursday. An invasive Burmese python's eyes were a little bigger than its stomach when it decided to devour a white-tailed deer fawn. Officials say pythons have been known to kill and ingest large prey and this was a record breaking meal.  Officials stumbled upon the python with the massive prey inside. The biologists removed the python out of the wild into an open area and the python was stressed so it pushed the deer out of its mouth. In the photo below you can see the breathing tube and tongue of the python as it has its mouth wrapped around the deer. Biologists believe it is the largest python-to-prey ratio documented. The python was 31.5 pounds and the deer was 35 pounds; 111% of the python's mass. The findings will be published in the March 2018 issue of the Herpetological Review.“This observation is another important piece of evidence for the negative impact invasive Burmese pythons are having on native wildlife across the Greater Everglades Ecosystem” said Ian Bartoszek, Conservancy of Southwest Florida wildlife biologist. “Imagine the potential consequences to the state and federally protected Florida panther if Burmese pythons adversely affect the number of white-tailed deer, a panther’s primary prey.”Biologists are focused on the impact the python is having across the food chain. Since 2013, the Conservancy and its research partners have been conducting research to document the invasive Burmese python's biology and behavior in Collier County, including the tracking, removal and necropsy of captured pythons.Kelly Bazzle is the Digital Executive Producer at Scripps Station WFTS. When 4-year-old Mateo forgot his favorite toy, Bear, in San Diego during a recent trip, employees of a local hotel made sure Bear had a good time in America’s Finest City.Mateo and his parents visited San Diego earlier this month. They didn’t realize they left Bear in their hotel room at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay. Employees were able to find Bear, but made sure he enjoyed his extended vacation in San Diego before sending him back to Los Angeles. Bear enjoyed the hotel pool and water slide, lunch, and the spa before his trip back home. Hotel employees took photos of Bear’s adventures and sent him back home to his family, along with a few goodies for Mateo.Mateo and his family are relatives of 10News reporter Melissa Mecija. 744

WHEATON, Ill. -- As the death toll from the coronavirus nears 200,000, recovery can be difficult for those who have survived the illness. But the first ever double-lung transplants for COVID-19 survivors is providing new hope for medical centers around the country and world.Brian Kuhns is at the beginning of a long and grueling road to recovery. Each day, he endures several difficult physical therapy sessions to rebuild his weakened body.“This is real tough,” said Kuhns. “All this stuff runs through my mind that I have to do and now I can't be like this.”Kuhns, who initially didn’t take the coronavirus seriously, contracted the deadly virus in early March. The illness was like nothing he’d ever felt before.“It was just like, I'm kind of walking dead. Fever, shaking so hard I can't believe it.”The virus that has now taken the lives of more than 190,000 Americans was destroying his lungs.About 100 days on life-support and isolated from his family for more than three months, the 62-year-old grandfather was near death more than once.“Yeah, I thought I was going to die for sure. I thought it was over,” said Kuhns. After 39 years at his side, Kuhns' wife Nancy couldn’t be in the hospital with him. On the phone, she pushed him to keep fighting.“I keep give him a lot of confidence even when they told me he wasn't gonna make it. I kept telling them that he was,” she said. His doctors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital determined his only chance for survival was a double-lung transplant. After 10 hours in surgery, Kuhns became only the second known coronavirus patient ever to have both lungs replaced.“I fought back, gasping for air, 24 hours a day. As hard as you could breathe,” said Kuhns.Dr. Mahesh Ramachandran, the chief medical officer at Northwestern Medicine’s Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, says they’ve already discharged 125 COVID-19 patients since the pandemic began. Rehab, says Dr. Ramachandran, is essential to recovery.“They get quite deconditioned. They get quite weak. They have neurologic problems, cardiac problems that need to be managed before they can safely go home,” said Dr. Ramachandran. Two months after the revolutionary transplant, Kuhns is still getting used to his new lungs.“I could feel it all the way down,” he said with a deep breath. But he continues to fight and implores others to wear a mask and avoid others or face the consequences.“This is a crazy disease. Some people get away with it and other people it nails,” said Kuhns. “I was one of the ones it nailed. So, you want to make a choice. You know which one you want to be.”After nearly six months in the hospital, if all goes well, he could go home by the end of the month. 2692

WINDSOR, Ontario — Caesars Windsor Hotel and Casino is temporarily closed due to a labor dispute with a local union.According to the company's website, the closure is the result of a labor disruption. A message on the site says, "At this time, hotel reservations booked between Friday, April 6 until Thursday, April 12 have been canceled."The Unifor Local 444 Facebook page says there was a tentative deal in place as of April 3 but that fell through. On Thursday night, only 41 percent of union members voted in favor of the new deal, which caused the strike. The 444 handles everything from janitors and food/waitstaff to hotel clerks. The casino says that Friday’s Johnny Reid concert has been postponed. Ticketholders can use their tickets when the show is rescheduled, or get a refund. However, tickets purchased at the Caesars box office will not be refunded until it reopens following the labor dispute. Right now, the casino says all other shows are scheduled until further notice. It's not clear how long the employee strike will last. The last strike at the casino happened in April of 2004 and lasted about 40 days. The casino released this statement: 1166

When students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas return to class after spring break next week, they'll be required to carry clear backpacks. The move is meant to ramp up security measures after last month's deadly shooting and a series of breaches since then."Clear backpacks are the only backpacks that will be permitted on campus," said Broward County School Superintendent Robert Runcie said in a letter sent to parents. 423
