SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Highway Patrol has ruled out street racing and DUI as causes of a crash on Interstate 805 in Sorrento Valley that left a man with serious injuries. Traffic came to a standstill in the northbound lanes of the freeway about 2 p.m. when a silver Mercedes SUV hit the driver of a blue Nissan. Witnesses told the CHP the Nissan suddenly stopped in a lane and the driver got out of the car. CHP says the Nissan became disabled and the driver got out of the car after pulling off to the side of the road. The Nissan’s driver was struck and thrown 135 feet before landing on the pavement. The CHP said the man had severe head injuries. A total of four cars were involved in the resulting pileup. Three people were taken to the hospital, San Diego Fire-Rescue reported, but no one aside from the Nissan's driver was seriously hurt. The other drivers stopped and cooperated with the investigation. The affected lanes of the freeway reopened about four hours after the crash.The Nissan was recently purchased, according to the CHP. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected an emergency injunction for a Chula Vista church to hold Christmas Day services indoors.South Bay United Pentecostal Church, which has had legal challenges denied over California's COVID-19 restrictions against places of worship holding indoor services, requested the injunction while its appeals case works its way through the courts.Thursday, the Ninth Circuit denied the request but the case will see a full hearing on the merits on January 15, 2021.RELATED: Los Angeles County change on indoor religious services could impact South Bay lawsuit"We are extremely disappointed that the Ninth Circuit has yanked the joy of Christmas away from South Bay United Pentecostal Church and its congregants," Charles LiMandri, one of the attorneys representing the church, said in a statement.LiMandri said they will request that the U.S. Supreme Court intervene in the case. The country's highest court has already ruled in favor of religious institutions in a New York case, prompting Los Angeles County to amend their public health order to allow for indoor religious services under certain modifications.“By refusing to allow South Bay to participate in the worldwide celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the court is continuing to perpetuate the violations of religious liberty that Governor Newsom has been executing for nine months under the guise of COVID-19 prevention,” said LiMandri.California's regional stay-at-home order prohibits indoor operations across several industries, including churches and places of religion.South Bay United Pentecostal Church has argued against the state's restrictions since May. The NRF says an "estimated 147.8 million U.S. consumers [are] expected to participate, up from 134.3 million last year, according to the annual survey released today."This includes both in-store and online shopping.This year had the shortest shopping window between Thanksgiving and Christmas, leaving shoppers nervous.Jessica Ramirez said she was so busy working she could only start shopping Saturday. She said the family had been to a few stores that day and she will get as much done as possible in the final countdown before Christmas.Dana Giusti was eating a candy cane while she shopped in Best Buy, saying her sugar fix was staving off anxiety about finishing up Christmas shopping and wrapping all the presents for her family.In Mission Valley, the Target parking lot was filled with lines of cars. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of Rebecca Zahau testified Thursday in the second day of the civil lawsuit surrounding the Coronado mansion death.Rebecca Zahau died in July 2011. Her nude, bound body was found hanging from the balcony of the Spreckels mansion.The death was officially declared a suicide but Zahau's family disagreed. They filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Zahau's boyfriend.Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is no physical, eyewitness, or scientific evidence linking him to Zahau’s death.Zahau's mother, Pari Zahau, took the witness stand Thursday morning and gave an emotional testimony as she was asked questions about her daughter.She remembered her as a sweet, loving and religious woman. The jury has three days off and will hear testimony again Monday.The family’s attorney Keith Greer handed Pari Zahau a piece of evidence and asked her to describe what it was.It was an envelope full of cash from Rebecca Zahau addressed to Pari Zahau and her late husband.Pari Zahau explained to the jury her daughter would support her financially by sending cash every month. That envelope was never sent, although one of the final times Pari Zahau talked to her daughter, she was told it would be on the way soon.Pari Zahau had to take a break from testifying when lawyer Keith Greer asked, “Did you ever think Rebecca would kill herself?”She gave a tearful response saying, “No. No, never. Never. My daughter? No. She is very sweet girl and she is very strong. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The ACLU is threatening to sue ICE over a policy that forbids detention center volunteers from speaking with the press.Souls Offering Loving and Compassionate Ears, also known as SOLACE, is not allowed to help at the Otay Mesa Detention Center until they sign a form promising not to speak with the media.In August, ICE discovered SOLACE wasn’t in compliance with their protocol before asking the group to resubmit the paperwork for their volunteers.ICE says the code of ethics is in place for the safety of the detainees. “These are often folks who don't have any family or friends in the United States so even if they could write or call they don't have anyone to connect with,” said Angela Fujii, a social justice coordinator with the First Unitarian Universalist.SOLACE volunteers are ready to help, but they want to make sure they can share with others about the place where things are kept pretty tight.SOLACE was also briefly barred from visiting during the Obama Administration but the compromise was met.Other groups are providing detainees with services, but SOLACE was the only one allowed to regularly visit. 1148
