SAN DIEGO (KGTV):SAN DIEGO (KGTV): Ten budding businesses will have a chance for a big boost when they compete for up to ,000 in cash during Thursday night's Quick Pitch Competition.The event, similar to the TV show "Shark Tank," gives each business-owner two minutes to wow the judges.The ten companies range from tech start-ups to medical research companies (For more information on the 10 finalists, click here). They were chosen from around 280 that applied."It's more art than science," says Mike Krenn, the CEO of San Diego Venture Group. They're one of the sponsors of the event. "There were so many companies. We fought long and hard over who were the final 10. But they've all got some momentum going to market, all chasing big opportunities."One company, DoWhop, is an online marketplace to buy and sell experiences around San Diego. It's founder, Rae Lietzau, says winning this competition would mean expanding her workforce and bandwidth on the site."At this stage, every dollar counts," says Lietzau. "Right now it means allowing more people to get paid to do what they love to do."In addition to SD Venture Group, the event is put on by Tech Coast Angels and the John G. Howard Foundation. All three groups work to improve business in the region. Krenn says this year's competition shows how San Diego has become a hub for start-ups."We're really on the upswing," says Krenn. "It's exciting to see a lot of people imported from silicon valley. Everything's trending in the right direction."Krenn also noted that the winning team from 2 years ago went on to raise around million in capital after the competition.Even companies that don't win cash at Quick Pitch usually get a boost from the exposure. (KGTV) - For 250,000 San Diego County students, school is not just access to education, it is access to food.“We know that for many many of our students, the stable meal they can rely on each day is that breakfast and lunch they can normally get at school,” said SDUSD Trustee Richard Barrera.There are food distribution sites across the county where families can pick up meals for kids while school is not in session. These services will continue through the summer. While thousands are taking advantage of the food distribution sites, not everyone can physically get to the locations, so there is a new state resource to combat that.Pandemic EBT, or P-EBT, is available to students who are eligible for free or reduced price meals at school. Families can apply and get 5 per child on a card that can be used like a debit card at grocery stores or online. The money stays on the card for a year. That number was chosen based on an estimate of how much it would cost to feed a child through the summer.With about a million households applying in the first week, Anahid Brakke with the San Diego Hunger Coalition said there has been a delay with signing up, so anyone interested needs to have patience during the application process. She said it's currently taking about three weeks to process and warned that phone lines are currently backed up, adding that it could take until the end of July to process everyone.“If you apply, if you leave a voicemail, if you send an email, they are making their way through all of that. They’re hiring new staff at the state, they’re extremely committed to making sure everybody who is eligible get their card,” said Brakke.Families need to apply by June 30. If there is more than one child in a family, all of the money will come on one card and the oldest child’s name will be on the card.Barrera mentioned some of the feedback so far has been caution from families who are worried about sharing their information.“Some of our families have called us and said is this some sort of scam? Is somebody trying to get my information? No. Take advantage of this program. It’s meant to support you and your kids,” said Barrera.He said SDUSD is communicating this information through robocalls, so families should not be surprised if they get a voicemail with this information.Leaders also encouraged everyone to apply because families could be eligible if a parent recently lost a job or took a pay cut.According to a release, P-EBT was authorized under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020 which allows for states to apply to the USDA to run a P-EBT program to meet children’s nutritional needs. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — After successive years of devastating wildfires, California's fire agency announced a plan Tuesday that would dramatically increase logging and other forest management efforts with the help of the National Guard.The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection released a list of 35 priority fuel-reduction projects it wants to start immediately across the state over roughly 90,000 acres. That's double the acreage the agency aimed to cover in the current fiscal year, CalFire Deputy Chief Scott McLean said.The agency is also seeking National Guard assistance to coordinate the work. They include removing dead trees, clearing vegetation, and creating fuel breaks, defensible spaces and ingress and egress corridors.The projects prioritize communities at high risk from wildfires but also with significant numbers of vulnerable groups such as the elderly or poor. They include work around the city of Redding, which was also devastated by wildfire last year, and in Butte County, where Paradise is located.An estimated 15 million acres of forest land in California are in need of thinning or other restoration work, so the 35 projects are just a start, Calfire officials said. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- Many Californians have not stepped out of their homes since Thursday after Governor Gavin Newsom issued the State-wide Stay-at-home order. But some are beginning to head outdoors, just with many precautions. Just a few days into the Governor's Stay-at-home order, many San Diegans are already getting cabin fever."With our gyms closed, we got to get exercise somehow," Joann Carcioppolo said. With no access to their weights and machines, Carcioppolo and her friend Janice Meyers decided to take a stroll around Pacific Beach. Of course, keeping in mind, Rule #1. "Doing our social distancing!" Meyers laughed. Families also took to the outdoors, hiking and hitting the parks. Instead of having their children clued to their devices, the Marcussen's spent the day at Calavera Hills Community Park in Carlsbad. Mother, Candice, said today, her children's playtime had a little bit of a modification. "We're not letting them play on the playground," Marcussen said. "They brought their own toys down to make sure that we stay healthy and clean."Now that kids do not have school, and parents are working from home, things can get mundane. But many said they are trying to stay positive during this global pandemic. "Were are just trying to be kind grateful for this extra time together that we wouldn't normally have had.
