SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a 6-3 vote, the San Diego City Council today rejected a proposed .5 million sale of the property holding the city's only roller skating rink, Skateworld.The proposal called for the city to sell the parcel of land to big-box store developer Pacifica Companies, much to the chagrin of Skateworld supporters who called on the council to either collect more community feedback before approving the sale or reject it outright in favor of renovating the rink.Skateworld advocates collected thousands of signatures in an effort to save the skating rink, including a change.org petition that garnered more than 19,000 supporters. "I really appreciate that residents of every council district came to speak today about the community that Skateworld fosters,'' said City Councilwoman Barbara Bry. "I think there's so few family friendlyopportunities in that community that it's really essential.''The skating rink was developed under a state redevelopment agency more than 40 years ago. When Gov. Jerry Brown dissolved the redevelopment agencies in 2011, he ordered that their assets be liquidated to the highest bidder.The city put the property up for bid last year and named Pacifica the recommended buyer after three rounds of receiving offers for the site. Supporters of the sale, including City Councilman Scott Sherman, who represents the district Skateworld is in, argued the city's hands were tied and it should honor Pacifica's bid. City Council members Mark Kersey and Chris Cate also voted in favor of the sale."I have to try to make a decision on what is fair,'' Sherman said. "And the reality is, if we went through three rounds of bidding and everybody was aware and we went through the community outreach and all that process andSkateworld had won that bid and I came in and said, `No, the developer said they'll give us more money, just tell them what they have to beat' ... everybody in this room would be down here screaming `How dare you do that.'''After rejecting the sale, the council voted unanimously to shift the property from a liquidation designation to a future redevelopment site. Sherman raised the concern that the council could be in the same position one year fromnow, with Skateworld finishing second in a bidding process to redevelop the site. But he voted for the motion regardless. "When I was looking at this, I really did say, you know, I like to give deference to my fellow council members and their district,'' City Councilwoman Monica Montgomery said. "This though, I went to church down the street as a child and went to Skateworld, so it is something that affects all of us.''The technically nonpartisan council voted along party lines to avoid the sale, showing the influence of council Democrats' supermajority. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego-based group of environmental activists launched a 100-day campaign today calling on the region's congressional representatives to support the so-called Green New Deal to mitigate the effects and exacerbation of climate change.San Diego 350 hopes to convince Reps. Susan Davis and Scott Peters, D- San Diego, and Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, to support the resolution by inundating their offices with calls and postcards from constituents between now and the August congressional recess.Reps. Mike Levin, D-Dana Point, and Juan Vargas, D-San Diego, are already co-sponsors of House Resolution 109, which supports the drafting and adoption of a Green New Deal. The proposal would reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a net-zero level, invest in infrastructure and shepherd the country's economic and energy sectors away from fossil fuels and coal by 2030.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, first proposed the concept and introduced the resolution in February."Over 80 years ago, (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and the Democratic Party created a bold plan to address the biggest economic crisis our nation hadever faced,'' said Masada Disenhouse, San Diego 350's executive director. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An elderly disabled woman was assaulted and seriously injured in downtown San Diego, police said Saturday.The victim, a 73-year-old homeless woman who uses a walker, was attacked near the corner of Fourth Avenue and B Street at 10:10 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department's homicide unit.She was taken to the hospital where she underwent emergency surgery, the lieutenant said. Because of the serious nature of the woman's injuries, investigators from the SDPD's homicide unit were called to the scene."Detectives are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses," Dobbs said. "A man was seen in an altercation with the victim. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Countywide sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums increased from June to July while median sale prices ticked down, according to data released Wednesday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Single-family home sales rose 2.4%, from 1,980 in June to 2,028 in July, while attached property sales ticked up 5.1%, from 975 in June to 1,025 last month. Both increases are a modest recovery for the housing market after housing sales tumbled by double digits from May to June.Median sales prices for both property types dipped slightly in July after steady gains each month of the year, save for attached property prices from March to April. Single-family home prices decreased 2.2% from 0,000 in June to 5,000 in July, while attached property prices dipped 1.5% from 1,500 in June to 5,000 last month.``The inventory of homes for sale across the county just can't seem to jump-start, although some neighborhoods have been consistently strong,'' said SDAR President Kevin Burke. ``We can be thankful for the continuing economic expansion, low mortgage rates and the recent reduction in the benchmark interest rate by the Fed.''Year-over-year sales declined for both property types, according to the GSDAR.
