A tidal wave of information hits us daily from the moment we open our phone and computer, and when it comes to social media, spotting "fake" from "fact" before you share news and photos takes some work! "More people are getting their information through social media,” says Katy Byron, program director of MediaWise with the Poynter Institute. Byron points to a Stanford University study, explaining just how widespread the issue of deciphering fiction from non-fiction is among teens. "More than 80 percent of teenagers don't know the difference between a real news story and a native advertisement online," says Byron. This is why Poynter’s MediaWise program was created. "We want to reach 1 million teens by 2020," says Byron. The program uses teen fact checkers that post social media videos to help others to determine what is real and what’s not. The crusade of teens across the country are also helping others determine how to debunk misinformation. “I think this is something anyone can do right now,” Byron says. Byron says before sharing pictures and articles online, ask yourself these three questions: 1. Who's behind the information? 2. What is the evidence? 3. What do other sources say? "I hope that we reach as many kids as we can with the curriculum and what we are teaching on our social media channels, so that they'll take these skills with them throughout their lives," Byron says. 1417

A man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing three people after they invited him over for Thanksgiving at their Avondale, Arizona, home. Court records show 33-year-old Brandon Robinson met two of the victims days before at a bar. Robinson had explained to them that he didn’t have family in town or a place to go for Thanksgiving, so they invited him to their home. According to one of the victims, after about 15 minutes at the home, Robinson began to act erratic and grabbed a knife approximately eight inches in length. Robinson then allegedly stabbed all three of the victims with the knife. One of the victims, a male, was stabbed approximately seven times and was hospitalized in critical condition. One female victim was stabbed approximately five times and had to have surgery for injuries. A second female victim had one stab wound but did not need to be hospitalized.Robinson reportedly left the scene before police arrived, but was located nearby with a large cut on his hand.No motive for the attack has been given.Robinson has been arrested and faces three charges of aggravated assault. 1116

TAMPA, Fla. — A 10-year-old girl is making a big difference in the City of Tampa.Vivian Anderson wrote a letter to Tampa Mayor Jane Castor in December 2019 after seeing a “Men Working” sign at a construction site where men and women were working side-by-side.“Well I didn’t really like how it was excluding the women,” said Vivian.In her letter, Vivian suggested the sign should be more inclusive and say “Workers Present” instead. Days, weeks and months went by without a response from the mayor’s office.“I was thinking she probably wasn’t gonna get it,” said Vivian.“I told her the wheels of government work slow and that it takes time and we’ll just have to wait to see what happens,” said Mary Anderson, Vivian’s mom.Finally, a letter arrived and Vivian was thrilled.“Happy, really, excited. I started screaming in the living room,” she said.The city is now ensuring that inclusive signage is required instead of “Men at Work.” Vik Bhide, Mobility Department Director, says that will be done during the design review, permit review and coordination of work on all projects. Bhide says the city phased out that type of signage years ago, but they’re now making sure other companies and contractors are on the same page.Adding to Vivian’s excitement, a second letter arrived in the mail inviting her to meet with Mayor Castor.During the meeting, Vivian was presented with a hard hat and two signs. One read “Workers Present” with the Mayor’s signature and the other said “Vivian M. Anderson Way.”“This is awesome! I love it!” said Vivian.“We need that input, we need that creativity, that innovation, especially from the young people in our community because we’re gonna be handing this city off to them in the near future,” said Castor. You can only imagine the amount of times I thought about writing this. The way I would write it, how I would feel thereafter. Well, not entirely sure why now is the right time, and what it is that feels exciting and liberating for me to talk. I cannot explain it. Many of you wonder what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why. A journalist contacted me, he found a way to reach me and I told him everything this past summer. He was kind and it felt so amazing to finally speak. The truth is, and please trust me I am ok and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days. Of course I survived. The recovery took time. There’s no light way to say it. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine. You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain? I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes. I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken?
