SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Business associations in North Park and Normal Heights are pushing back against a plan organizers say could bring more customers to their parts of town.Leaders from both business improvement districts are expressing coronavirus-related concerns over a scavenger hunt the city and the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition are planning beginning Aug. 12 and lasting two weeks. "It's unpredictable, especially in this environment, when you're going to invite people to get out of their house for the first time," said Scott Kessler, who leads the Adams Avenue Business Association. "We just don't know what to expect."Organizers say the event is all about social distancing. Participants download an app called Scavify, which they use to do things like find landmarks or answer trivia questions. Local businesses decide how much they want to be involved. "Most of this engagement is done outside, socially distanced, and it's just about highlighting businesses and community organizations," said Sylvie Froncek, program director at the Bike Coalition. But the business organizations say they are concerned about a lack of organization and late notice. "We welcome shoppers, diners and people in need of essential services but we do not support any gatherings that cannot be managed or overseen for safety protocols. Bike events have traditionally brought great benefit to North Park because of the number of people who see them as a way to connect with friends while enjoying outdoor activity," Angela Landsberg, who directs the North Park Main Street Association, said in a statement. "Unless these events can be managed to ensure proper safety for our community at this time we believe they could do more harm than good."Others say that fear is unfounded. The coalition held a scavenger hunt earlier in July in Imperial Beach, an event Councilman Mark West said was such a big success that they have scheduled another one."No one needs to be afraid of this, they need to embrace it and enjoy it because it's good for businesses, it's good for families and it gets you outside," West said. In a statement, the City of San Diego says the event is a safe and virtual opportunity to support local business. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crowds have been sparse at Balboa Park since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but that doesn't mean the park hasn't been busy."The change in Balboa Park is evident. The change in Balboa Park is important," says Peter Comiskey, the Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership.Comiskey says nearly every museum in the park has used the unexpected downtime to refresh their exhibits or renovate their facility. That includes large-scale renovations at the Timken and Mingei Museums."While they've been closed, they've been taking advantage of, in some cases, completely removing all of their pieces and reworking their entire buildings," says Comiskey.RELATED: Observation Wheel could bring people back to the parkBut it's not just museums. The 100-year old carousel is getting refurbished. Crews are almost finished building an observation deck around the Morton Bay Fig Tree. Five new cottages in the International Village are about to open up, housing 9 new cultural groups. "We want to do our part to help elevate the Palisades and revitalize it in the way that Plaza de Panama was."The pandemic allowed the Comic-Con Museum to get a head start on their online offerings, while still working on building renovations and exhibit planning.The Starlight plans show new terraced lawn seating, nature gardens, walking trails, and smaller stages surrounding the main bowl.Save Starlight President Steve Stopper says work is already underway on some of the smaller parts of the renovation, so they can build excitement over the coming months."It creates a window for people to get behind the idea," he says. "They can see this is really viable for the future."Stopper says it's an exciting time to be around the park, as it adds more gems to the Crown Jewel of San Diego. 2669

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities responded to a riot Friday night at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa that left five people injured, including at least one with serious injuries.Cal Fire San Diego said about 100 inmates were in the prison yard when a fight broke out around 8 p.m. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Saturday that number was closer to 80 inmates.CDCR said officers gave multiple orders to stop fighting, before using several rounds of less-than-lethal force to stop the incident.Four inmate-made weapons were recovered, CDCR said.Five inmates were injured and had to be transported outside the prison for treatment, for injuries including puncture wounds, cuts, and bruises to the head, neck, and torso areas, CDCR says. Cal Fire had previously reported that six inmates were transferred from the scene.One of those inmates suffering from puncture wounds was in critical condition. Three inmates were in fair condition and the fifth was treated and returned to prison, CDCR said.No prison staff members were injured.The facility canceled visitation for Facility A Saturday and Sunday in light of the riot. 1175

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- COVID-19 has brought us stories of loss, heartache, and despair. But we've also seen humanity pull together in acts of service and sacrifice.For RN Ana Wilkinson it's a calling born from her childhood, a past not without pain.When Wilkinson arrived in New York City in the midst of the pandemic. She was unprepared for what she witnessed. Put on the floor that night, Wilkinson was given 15 COVID patients. Despite all her efforts, she would lose 8 patients that night. While she says some nurses quit the next day, she decided to stay and "just be Ana." For Ana that meant an unorthodox approach to the sickest patients. She would smile, hold their hands, and dance.Behind her mask of optimism were a lifetime of pain, loss, and sorrow. Something she tries to make better for her patients and their families.At around three years old Ana and her family immigrated to the U.S from Nicaragua as refugees. Childhood was difficult. Her mother's alcoholism would lead to abuse. Abuse and neglect would lead to Ana being put in a foster home. Some days she went to school with bruises.All this Ana says makes her see things differently. She believes it helps her to be more compassionate as a nurse. She is now happily married to a firefighter and has two young boys but volunteering to provide medical care where it's needed is an important part of her life. Whether it's New York City or other countries around the world, Wilkinson answers the call. Always ready to be there in a patient's darkest hours... hoping just maybe her smile can bring light.As part of this story Hunt interviewed Del Mar Clinical Psychologist, and international personality expert, Dr. Richard Levak. Levak has been tasked by American television series such as Survivor, Apprentice, and The Amazing Race to analyze personalities to determine capable candidates and group dynamics. Dr. Levak has never worked with Wilkinson but provided research and analysis. He said the most important thing for all hospitalized COVID patients is not to feel alone.
