Leaders of a program for at risk youth in Southern California are worried as the teens who need the most help may not be getting the opportunities they need because of the pandemic.Student Leslie Damien has very specific aspirations.“I want to be a doctor, actually -- I hope to be getting into autopsies,” Damien said.But that wasn't the case two years ago when she was living an entirely different lifestyle.“I was on probation for skipping school, for being absent all the time, for smoking and doing drugs. I was doing really bad during this time,” Damien said.Damien said it was her probation officer who made her realize that her life was spiraling downward. The two sat down and had a heart-to-heart conversation.“’Leslie, you are messing up your life,” Damien said, recalling her conversation. “’You have so much to look forward to, you can either go to Sunburst or mess up your life and you’re not going to get anywhere.”She signed up and checked herself in for change.“What made me want to make the change was seeing my grandmother cry,” Damien said. “I saw her cry she said she was disappointed and thought I was going to be something in the world and she though my life was going to go completely bad.”“We take students who are struggling for whatever reason, drugs, alcohol family issues, bad relationships and we bring them into a safe environment built around the military model of structure and discipline and we get them away from all those distractions,” said Sgt. Ryan Salvoni, the admissions coordinator for Sunburst Youth Academy in Los Alamitos, California. It's a quas-imilitary, residential youth program run by the National Guard and Orange County Department of Education.“Sunburst is not a placement facility, it’s not a bootcamp for bad kids, parents can’t force their students to attend,” Salvoni said. It’s a scholarship that you have to apply for and earn. You have to have an actual desire for change and make a commitment to the process in order for our program to have significant change in their life.”The program is free, and available to any teen in six Southern California counties. There are 40 similar programs like this one across the country. It’s 22 weeks long, and Salvoni says, there are typically more applicants than scholarships. There's no turning back. No quitting.“We make it harder for a student to quit and go home than it is to get back in and continue through that moment of weakness,” Salvoni said. “We’re trying to develop that sense of resiliency when they’re with us so they can push through moments of wanting to quit or give up.”Salvoni is worried about the kids he's not able to reach. Like every other aspect of our society, the pandemic has changed the way he does outreach.“Any empty scholarship that goes unfulfilled is a lost opportunity for a student to change their life,” Salvoni said.And that, Damien said, is something she's proof of.“I would be probably on the streets, smoking weed, not graduating high school, doing the same things I was doing before, not in a good place, nowhere near where I am now,” Damien said.After graduating, she became valedictorian, graduating with a 4.5 GPA, and is well on her way to become a doctor.“It's an extraordinary opportunity for those students who don’t have a future or who think that there’s nothing that’s going to go on with their life it’s a huge opportunity to start your future to give you a second opportunity to be something great or be something in the world,” Damien said.All that is required for applicants is an ID and be free of serious legal troubles. 3586

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - For the first time, one of the alumni from the prestigious The Bishop’s School in La Jolla is speaking out about how, she says, her former teacher repeatedly sexually abused her. She has never shared her story in a television interview, until now.Investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner broke the story last summer when seven former students at The Bishop's School had come forward and described separate instances. The school reported that five of these were first-hand accounts of sexual misconduct or boundary violations committed by a school employee and in each instance, a different perpetrator was named. Last month, the school reported that the number of alumni coming forward had doubled from seven to 14.We've agreed to not show the former student's face because she wants to protect her family from her past. “Your parents were the ones who sent you to Bishop's,” we say. “What would it do to them if they found out about the alleged abuse?” She responds, “My dad would be devastated.”She's a graduate of the acclaimed private school, where annual tuition is currently ,000.She no longer lives locally, but flew into San Diego to meet us. We've been talking for a year, but only now is she ready to be recorded. “I carried so much shame for so many years as a result of this,” she explains.This May, The Bishop's School updated alumni about the investigation it launched in 2017. The May 3rd, 2019 letter reveals, “To date, 14 alumni have come forward to report incidents of sexual misconduct.”The school also reports, "Ten different perpetrators were identified as having engaged in sexual misconduct that would potentially constitute a crime at the time of occurrence."None of the accused are apparently still with the school and at least two are reportedly dead. There were no reported cases within the last 20 years.The school reports that most of the cases were from the 1970s and 1980s, like the case for the alleged victim who we interviewed.“He was my adviser starting as early as 7th grade,” she tells us. By her junior year, when she 17 and he was about 30, she says their relationship changed.“He said he had a flat tire on his bicycle and asked for a ride home,” she reveals. She says he gave her alcohol and seduced her and they had sex several times over the next few months, while he was her teacher.We ask, “Where would you have sex with him?” She says, “In his bedroom that he shared with his wife.” Next, we ask, “How old was his child during your affair with him?” She responds, “I believe she was seven [years-old].”We go on to question, “Do you think that your work earned you a good grade or do you think it was the sex that earned you a good grade?” She replies, “I completely think it was the sex.”“Were you aware at the time of other teachers having inappropriate relationships with students?” we ask.“Yeah…it was like this subculture that many of us knew about,” she adds.She says she kept her secret for years. “I felt dirty. I felt used,” she tells 10News. She says she used alcohol and drugs to numb her pain.Her case, she says, is one of ten that've now been referred to San Diego Police Department detectives. She tells us that detectives told her that, “they wished they could press charges but because of the statute of limitations, their hands were tied.”San Diego expert criminal defense attorney Gretchen Von Helms says if a victim was underage during the assault, he or she could wait until just before his or her 40th birthday to make a report. “The reason for that was recognizing that some sexual assault victims, [particularly] minors, who may have been assaulted by someone who has authority in their life, may not want to report or may not have the courage to report for many years,” she explains.Yet on January 1st, 2017, a new California law ended any statute of limitations for such crimes. However, the law is not retroactive. It doesn't apply to any assault before 2017, like the one The Bishop’s School graduate alleges.Von Helms explains that the law is not being implemented retroactively in an effort to be fair and reasonable to both the accuser and the accused.“If you were falsely accused of something that happened twenty years ago, how do you go back and reconstruct your alibi or where you were or your defense? It would be nigh impossible to do so,” she adds.The two exceptions to the statute include independent corroboration and DNA evidence.The detective in charge of The Bishop's School investigations declined an interview but confirmed that police received several allegations for review and reported the following in an email to 10News. “6 of those allegations were confidential so we were unable to make contact. Of the 5 remaining, 3 filed police reports that were followed up on and ultimately sent to the District Attorney's Office for prosecutorial review. Any questions regarding statutes of limitations or the status of those cases should be directed to the District Attorney's Office.”Monday, the District Attorney's Office confirmed that all three cases were rejected. In a follow up email, a representative of the DA’s Office wrote, “You should also know that we can only file charges when we believe we can prove them beyond a reasonable doubt.”The school also declined an interview, but in the recent letter to alumni, The Bishop’s School leaders wrote, in part, “…we apologize to everyone who was affected.” School leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to student safety.We ask the graduate who we interviewed, “Do you believe there are other victims who have not come forward, yet?”“Oh, most likely. Yeah,” she responds. This past February, the school began working with a 24-hour reporting service. (KGTV) - Hundreds of La Mesa neighbors came out to clean up and board up businesses Sunday morning.Albert's Fresh Mexican Food owner Albert Garzon said he saw his business get destroyed Saturday night, "there's nothing you can do about it but just watch, it was just so much chaos and just people running left and right."He said when he came back his business was being boarded up by volunteers. "Under the circumstances with the COVID to make matters worse for all these poor business owners that are barely making ends meet before this even started," Garzon said.The entire La Mesa Springs Shopping Center was covered in boards, provided by a local construction company, Meram Building."Before I even got here my business was clean, it was so many volunteers and I was, literally I had tears in my eyes," Chintu Patel, Owner of Menchie's, said.Both Patel and Garzon were thankful to see support, their heartbreak replaced with gratitude and a sense of perseverance."What the people of La Mesa have come out to do for their community is priceless and that's why we're keeping strong and we're La Mesa strong," Garzon said.Neighbors swept up glass, threw out trash and did anything that was needed. About a dozen formed a human assembly line moving merchandise so Play It Again Sports could secure their building."Yesterday there were signs there was rock throwing there was vulgarity, there was accusations against the police, look at today, today there's brooms, there's shovels." LAKE PARK, Fla. -- The owners of a bait and tackle store in Florida have been accused of holding two people they suspected of shoplifting at gunpointDaniel Friedman, Eric Friedman and Daniel Friedman, the owners of Just Fishing Tackle and Consignment in Lake Park are charged with robbery with a firearm, false imprisonment, and tampering with evidence.On Aug.16, deputies with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says it responded to the Just Fishing in reference to a shoplifting complaint.When deputies arrived, one person was laying on the ground surrendering to law enforcement, and one of the business owners was holding a shotgun over another person in the rear of the store.PBSO says the person being held at gunpoint had lacerations and swelling to his face and lacerations to his arms and back.During their investigation, deputies learned that the Friedmans knew the people they accused of shoplifting.The employees told the detective that on Aug. 8, the person being held at gunpoint along with an unidentified man came to Just Fishing and stole a fishing reel worth approximately 0. At no time did the Friedmans or other employees notify law enforcement to report the crime.The detective said that on Aug. 16, Daniel Friedman and his son Eric, called the man about the stolen fishing reel. Both he and another man showed up to the store that afternoon. Upon entering the store, PBSO says Eric Friedman confronted the man about the theft. According to the detective, the man and Daniel Friedman began to fight and Daniel Friedman pulled out a shotgun.PBSO says the two men were held against their will at gunpoint. They later told the detective that they were beaten and forced at gunpoint to hand over their cell phones, ,180 in cash and their wallets.According to PBSO, after learning this information, Daniel Friedman and family then became confrontational with deputies regarding the alleged robbery of the men and the family then denied deputies access to the business.PBSO says the store's surveillance video system was disabled between 2:40 p.m. and 4:36 p.m.Deputies say they believe the DVR was unplugged during this time.According to PBSO, at 2:40 p.m. store employee Marc Kellener is observed walking towards the area where the DVR system is located and then the video ceases recording.The video resumes at 4:35 p.m. with one of the men seen lying on the ground with his hands out to his side in the surrender position and the other man seated in a chair in the rear office portion of the store.Eric Friedman is seen yelling at the seated man and Daniel Friedman is seen standing next to him holding a chrome-colored shotgun. Naomi Friedman is seen on video placing a large sum of cash into a white envelope, then place the envelope into a larger mailing envelope and places it into a desk drawer.PBSO says surveillance footage shows Daniel Friedman grabbing one man by the neck and pushing him back down into the chair.At 4:36 p.m., surveillance video shows Marc Kellener walk into the office and punch one of the men twice in the face.At 4:40 p.m., Daniel Friedman is seen on video striking one of the men in the head with the butt of the shotgun. Minutes later Eric Friedman is seen spitting in one man's face multiple times.Daniel Friedman is charged with two counts of robbery with a firearm, two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of kidnapping/false imprisonment.Naomi Friedman and Marc Kellener are both charged with two counts of robbery with a firearm, two counts of kidnapping/false imprisonment, and one count of destroying evidence.    3681
