SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Descanso woman whose power was cut during last week's Red Flag warning was surprised to receive a utility estimate showing an increase in power use.Cheryl Erpelding's power was taken away for parts of both Oct. 30 and Oct. 31, when SDG&E was trying to prevent a wildfire from igniting and spreading. Still, she got an estimate from SDG&E showing that she used the most power during the parts of those two days when the power was on. "If you're going to email me how much I'm using, why don't you email me a better guess," Erpelding said. RELATED: Homeowners with solar heated about SDG&E proposal to raise minimum billErpelding's weekly estimate showed she used 31 kilowatt hours on Oct. 31, and 26 kilowatt hours on Oct. 30. On other days of the week, her usage ranged from 16 to 24 kilowatt hours.SDG&E says the reason for this is Erpelding is a solar customer. The estimate she received reflects her net usage, which usually reflects credit for her putting power back into the grid. That reduces her net usage significantly. During the public safety power shutoffs, she did not put power back into the grid, but still used power during parts of the day it was on. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A father is speaking out after being stuck on a SeaWorld ride for several hours in the cold Monday night. In video from the incident, 15-year-old Jordan Sherr can be heard shivering in the cold as temperatures plummeted into the low 40s. Jordan and his dad Jonathan were in a gondola on the Bayside Skyride when, two minutes into the ride, a huge gust of wind blew into the bay. “40-50 miles per-hour, blowing us around, looked up and saw the cables going spastic. Wondering what was going when it snapped shut, shaking us at a 45-degree angle back and forth,” said Jonathan Sherr. RELATED: 'Gust of significant wind' causes SeaWorld ride to stop, leaves 16 strandedFor a few terrifying moments, Sherr says he thought it was the end.“We thought we were going to plummet to our deaths. We said a few prayer, told each other we loved each other, then we decided to come up with a game plan, assessed height of water and decided it was a no go,” Sherr said. Their fears weren’t realized and, eventually, the gondola stabilized and they began to record cellphone video. “We're like a hundred feet up, over shallow water yea,” Sherr said. Over the next five hours, Sherr says they heard messages from staff at SeaWorld over a loudspeaker before firefighters came to the rescue. RELATED: San Diego Fire-Rescue firefighter details SeaWorld gondola rescueSherr said it was so dark they couldn’t see the other gondolas and it was cold. Jonathan, who has suffered a stroke, says he stiffens up in the cold. He was able to cover up with a blanket located in the gondola. After five hours, it was their turn to be rescued. They were the last to be rescued. Jordan went first, followed by Jonathan. 1714

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Two San Diego-area teachers are among six state finalists announced Tuesday for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.According to the State Department of Education, the award honors teachers who "display subject mastery, appropriate use of instructional methods and strategies, lifelong learning and leadership in education outside the classroom."The PAEMST is presented by the National Science Foundation. Up to 108 teachers are recognized each year."These teachers are incredible educators, role models and mentors to all those around them, and through mastery of their craft, they inspire students to study math, technology, engineering, and science -- including computer science," State Education Secretary Tony Thurmond said. "They're bright stars and prime examples of excellence in our educational system, and we hope that all students can enroll in great STEAM and computer science programs with educators like them, to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow."Khamphet Pease, a sixth-grade teacher at Wilson Middle School in San Diego, was named a finalist in the mathematics category. An educator for 14 years, Pease teaches courses in Introduction to Coding; Gateway to Technology: Design and Modeling, Automation and Robotics; and Computer Science for Innovators and Makers. From 2014-16 she also mentored 16 high school girls from schools across the county to build a microlab experiment that was sent to the International Space Station to test zero gravity.Marlys Williamson, a fifth-grade teacher at Wolf Canyon Elementary in Chula Vista, was named a finalist in the science category. Williamson, a 13-year educator, has trained fellow teachers on science and engineering practices, led the creation of Wolf Canyon's Design Den makerspace and mentored student teachers from multiple teaching programs. The eventual award winners from each state receive a ,000 award from the NSF, receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States, and are traditionally honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. 2096
