Good news and bad news from the IRS this July.The good: the agency reopened for business as of July 13th, which means it is now taking phone calls and processing tax filings as quickly as possible.The bad: during a year when every dime counts, the agency says as many as 4.7 million tax refunds will be delayed another few months.Cristy Mack is one of them. She and her husband never wait to file their taxes because she depends on her refund.But like almost five million other people, they still file paper returns because they are most comfortable doing that."We mailed our paper forms at the end of February," she said.But five months later, Mack still doesn't have her refund."A total of 18 weeks have gone by since we mailed in our return," Mack said.She tried calling the IRS, she says, but like countless other taxpayers, ran into a brick wall."They say they aren't taking calls at the moment," she said.Why refunds are taking so long this yearThe IRS's national taxpayer advocate now says as 4.7 million people who filed paper returns will have very late refunds.That's because the agency furloughed thousands of workers this spring and stopped processing paper returns for two months, creating a huge backlog.Paper processing has restarted, but workers are far behind.Mack needs her tax refund badly."It means a lot to us," she said. High school students across the country could soon receive training on how to stop bleeding during an incident like a school shooting, and the federal government is offering a big grant to make this happen.This week, Clay High School in Oregon, Ohio became one of the few schools to add Stop the Bleed kits in 90 classrooms, thanks to the proposal of student Nick McNeal.McNeal brought the idea to his school’s student government program, and after much persistence, his school passed out the kits to all teachers earlier this week."Now it's a matter of, how can we keep our kids safe in addition to education," says school principal James Jurski.Now, the Department of Homeland Security wants to make sure even more teachers and students are prepared to do what they can to minimize casualties in the event of a school shooting. Officials are offering .8 million to anyone who can come up with a trauma-training program that could be utilized on a national scale.The program, called “School-Age Trauma Training (SATT),” seeks to “deliver free to the public, lifesaving trauma training to high school age students for mass casualty events.”Jurski says in 2018, it's just a necessity that schools prepare for these situations, but he admitted it is frustrating that it has come to this.“Every teacher in the building went into education to educate students,” explains Jurski. “And I don't think there’s a time, at least when I went to school, where safety was even mentioned in our training. GRANDBY, Colo. — Imagine trying to outrun an inferno and three trees fall on the only road out. That's what Mike Darrah had to contend with Wednesday.The Trail Creek Estates homeowner said he received a pre-evacuation order Thursday, Oct. 15, so he and his wife drove up from Boulder County to pack a few things and put them in storage.He said he went back up Saturday to help neighbors with their horses and other belongings and stayed through Wednesday when it "started getting smoky."Soon, he could see flames moving through the entire valley. He will likely never forget the sound."It was like a freight train," he said, "the proverbial freight train, with the wind blowing."Darrah said he saw "swirling sparks" across the street, the entire area on fire."When I say on fire, it was from the ground all the way up to 90-foot pine trees. It was that fast," he said.Darrah told Denver7 he grabbed a few items from his house and started to drive out, only to be stopped by three Aspen trees which had blown over, blocking his way out.He got out the chain saw he said he keeps for such an occasion."I'm pulling and pulling trying to prime it. It would just sputter but it wouldn't get going," he said.Just as he was about the leave his truck and trailer behind and hoof it out of the neighborhood, a forest service employee drove up from the other side."He hopped out, and between the two of us, we were able to muscle those aspens, not off the road, but just enough to the side that I could get around them."Darrah said he doesn't know whether his house survived."We think we've lost it," he said.He told KMGH he has seen pictures of his neighbor's homes, several of which have burned to the ground, but he hasn't seen a photo of his house. She says the US government needs to grant her political asylum.Belarus-born Anastasia Vashukevich claims she has proof of Russian interference in the 2016 US election in the form of more than an hour of audio recordings and photos of meetings."I am ready to help with an investigation if they help us get out of here," says the 21-year old.None of the alleged recordings or photos of those meetings have been made public.'A plan for the election'Vashukevich's arrival in this Thai detention center is a bizarre and tangled saga.Vashukevich, who also goes by the pseudonym Nastya Rybka, was part of a group led by author and free sex advocate Alexander Kirillov arrested in February in the Thai resort town of Pattaya while running so-called "sex training" sessions.Thai police confirmed they are processing the paperwork for the eventual deportation of Vashukevich and Kirillov on charges relating to visa violations, back to Russia.On Monday CNN met with Vashukevich and Kirillov inside the detention center. The scene was chaotic, loud and miserably hot.Vashukevich spoke through bars within touching distance of Kirillov, who stood barefoot with other male prisoners behind a second row of bars.Vashukevich, who claims to be the former mistress of Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, says she witnessed several meetings in 2016 and 2017 between Deripaska and at least three un-named Americans.Deripaska -- who denies any affair -- is a subject of political intrigue in US political circles, owing to his longstanding relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin."They had a plan for the election," says Vashukevich of the men.When he was confronted by CNN last year, Deripaska called allegations that he may have been a back channel from the Kremlin to the Trump campaign "fake news."Regarding his alleged relationship with Vashukevich, a spokesperson for Deripaska told CNN: "This is clearly an attempt by Anastasia Vashukevitch (aka Nastya Rybka) to politicize the accusations of the Thai police.
