DENVER, Co. – The checkout line is now part of the front line of the coronavirus pandemic. Because of the great risk millions of workers in grocery stores and essential businesses were forced into by going to work each day, many of these workers received hazard pay or bonuses for several weeks. Now, many of the big retailers are stopping the pay hikes as states reopen, leaving workers asking: Why did the hazard pay end when the hazard is far from over? “These workers didn’t sign up to die,” said Kim Cordova, the President of the UFCW Local 7 union in Denver.Lisa Harris has been a cashier at a Kroger in Virginia for 13 years. She said working through this pandemic has been stressful. “We see at least 300 people per day,” Harris said. With the increased risk to employees, many grocery stores and retail giants like Kroger, Amazon, and Target offered a per hour wage increase, calling it “Hero Pay.” For King Soopers butcher Kevin Smith, the extra two dollars an hour meant peace of mind. “My wife lost her job because of the COVID, and that pay was really helping out, it meant a lot to me,” said Smith. 1129
Living in a world where business revolves around technology, cybersecurity has become a more common issue. Studies show the greatest risk for a data breach is employee negligence. “Somewhere between 85 and 95 percent of successful attacks on organizations now stem from phishing,” cybersecurity expert Ross Jordan said. Ross Jordan with High Touch Technologies says phishing is a way for foreign groups or companies to gain private information from a company by targeting the employee usually through email. Scammers have become advanced enough to appear as a person or organization you trust asking for your password or credit card number. “Phishing is something that’s usually sent out by bots. Literally just blasted out to hundreds if not thousands of emails at a time. And they’re hoping for that one na?ve person to follow the link, and when they do, you’re literally opening the doors to the kingdom,” Jordan said. Employees are often tricked because the email contains a reactionary ask telling somebody they need to share personal information right away. “They’re taking advantage of our human nature. And when somebody needs your help, and somebody needs an action from you, you want to respond, you want to do something,” Jordan said. According to Jordan, the best way to prevent these attacks is to train your employees. Commercial General Contractor, Pinkard Construction, is one company leading by example. Technology Manager Eric Schmeer says models that used to be on paper have now become fully digitized using laser scanners, drones and 360 degree cameras. “All of these devices, all this information, it’s all computerized, it’s all digital, it’s all connected to the internet. And so when you’re running these multi-million dollar projects and all that information is digital, it’s really, really important to protect it,” Schmeer said. For that reason, Pinkard Construction takes time to educate its employees on what an attack could look like. “Teach people just the fundamentals about how to analyze an email, and determine whether it looks phishy or not. And what to do when they’re not sure about links and whether they should click them, and how to figure out where they go,” Schmeer said. The company also fosters an environment where employees are encouraged to come forward with questions. “Nobody is ever hesitant to forward an entire technology team here and say ‘Hey is this legitimate? Can I click this link? What’s gonna happen here?’” Knowing you could be just one click away from killing your company, it’s always OK to ask for help. “Just ask. It’s very simple. CHICAGO, Ill. – When it comes to the musical instruments, we hear every day, many are mass produced. But, there’s something about the sound that comes from a hand-crafted instrument. It’s a talent that takes years to learn. Gently whittling away, the seasoned wood students are learning the age-old skill. “Violin-making is mostly a craft but there is also art involved,” explained Antoine Nédélec, Director of the Chicago School of Violin Making. The school is one of only three full-time violin making schools in the country. The program takes three years. Students learn to make violins, violas and cellos. “We do things almost identically as they did it four-hundred years ago,” said Nédélec. “There’s a few power tools here and there but really it’s almost the same.” Mass produced violins normally cost less. But some argue they’re less durable and produce a less rich sound. It’s why the handmade instruments are still in demand. “Pretty tedious process… trying to match a scroll,” said second year student Trevor Austin. Austin comes from a family of violinmakers. “Going forward I’d like to go into my family’s shop and work to eventually run it. So, that’s what I’m looking forward to,” he said.Over the course of their three-year studies, students are required to build six instruments. Instructor Kristin Siegfried Ballenger says the last one must be constructed in six weeks without supervision. “We’re here in case of emergencies but we want to be able to have the students prove that they are capable of working on their own in constructing instruments,” said Ballenger. Kyung Hee came to the school from South Korea. So far, she’s completed two of the required six violins. “I’m really happy that I made this one, because I was a little doubtful at first,” she said. Claire Rowan, a third-year student says not everyone who learns the craft has a musical background. “All of it was a learning curve since I never played violin growing up or at all and I only really enjoy crafting,” said Rowan. “So, even learning wood-working, learning how to use tools was really exciting.” But the true test comes from the sound their instruments generate. “You need to be good with your ears…. Because you need to know if it sounds good or not,” explained Nédélec.It’s a testament to an artform created in the past and preserved for the future. 2367
DENVER – The man who was detained after driving his car through a crowd of protesters rallying for Breonna Taylor says he had no intention of hurting anybody and was only defending himself after his vehicle was surrounded by demonstrators outside the Colorado State Capitol building in Denver Wednesday night.“I was driving to go pick up a client and I saw a commotion, I saw police lights at 14th and Lincoln and so when I was there, at the Capitol, I wasn’t really looking left, I was looking right to see the accident and by the time I turned, I started getting surrounded by people,” said Jonathan Benson, who claimed demonstrators yelled, kicked and even used a hammer on his windshield as they tried to get him to leave the area.Video from AIRTRACKER7, as well as from reporters on the ground, showed the small crowd of protesters surrounding Benson’s vehicle and blocking his way. The driver, who was going north on Lincoln Street, had slowed down as he reached the protesters in the area, eventually pulling up and parking his vehicle in front of the Capitol building. There were other cars trying to drive that day and they stopped. There are people with signs, there are people honking in support and so why would a person want to try to drive through?” she said.Benson was detained seconds later by police about a block away from where the incident occurred and was released after providing officers with a statement and his contact information.Thomas said no charges have been filed against Benson as police are still investigating exactly how the events unfolded, but he did give drivers some advice should they end up in a similar situation.“In the event someone is blocking you or you are surrounded by people, our advice is to stay in the car, lock your doors, do not engage with demonstrators,” Thomas said, adding drivers should back away, or turn around. If that’s not possible, they should call 911.While no arrests in connection to that incident have taken place, Denver Police Department spokesman Doug Schepman said three people were arrested following the protest: Allan Cutler, 52, was arrested for obstruction of a street. Barry Peterson and his wife, Jan, were looking forward to forever. The married journalists were living and working in Asia, until Jan's diagnosis with Alzheimer’s at age 55 cut their forever short. “The hardest thing was watching her disappear a little more,” Barry says. They discussed what Barry’s life might look like without her. “She was very adamant that if something happened to her, which I didn't think was going to happen, that I should go on and have the rest of my life,” he says. CBS Sunday Morning captured video of the couple when Jan moved into assisted living. “I do love him, and just couldn't do without him,” Jan said in the video. Barry was alone, and he had to make a difficult decision. “I really felt that for my survival, my sanity, my desire to have conversations with someone that really understood the process, that I needed to reach out and I did,” Barry says.That’s when Barry met Mary Nell Wolff. Friends encouraged Mary to go on Match.com. She says she later got a message from Barry, who shared his story about his wife's illness. “It just broke my heart,” Mary Nell recalls.Mary Nell had suffered her own tragedy, losing her husband in a bicycle accident. After writing and talking on the phone for a year, she and Barry met in person, and eventually moved in together. With Barry traveling the world for work, Mary Nell took on caregiving responsibilities for Jan. “I felt at peace the moment that Jan and Mary Nell bonded,” Barry says. Smith’s husband, Dan, sent shock waves through social media when he revealed he has a live-in girlfriend while also caring for his wife. “If you're not in it, then you have no right to judge people who are in it,” Barry says. Amelia Schaffer with the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association says Barry and Dan’s stories are really about the importance of early detection and outlining your wishes while you can. “The biggest barrier to having conversations early is that people don't recognize they're dealing with Alzheimer’s,” Schaffer says.Jan passed away in 2013. Barry says if you can understand the love he shared with her and Mary Nell, “then you have understood the matrix of what love is like with Alzheimer’s for people who just want to survive.” 2649
