CHARLOTTE, NC. — What started as a hobby is now getting Andy and Melanie Tritten up before the sun."I always made sauce, a lot of it, just on a whim, and it would be everywhere and we'd start giving it away," said Melanie Tritten. But after years of cooking for fun, this self-taught chef wanted to share her love for roasted tomatoes and fresh herbs with her community. Within a few months, the couple perfected Melanie’s recipes and Cannizzaro Sauces was born. The husband-wife team makes six different sauces and sells them in stores across seven states, even shipping them across the country."There are a lot of painstaking things," said Melanie. "We seed in all of our tomatoes. I hand core every tomato. He chops all the onions. He has goggles he has to wear because there's so many!" she laughed."It is a labor of love, and very labor intense, and if it takes time, it means that it's good."When the pandemic hit, the Trittens were surprised and relieved that the tasty recipes they were cooking up were on nearly everyone’s shopping list. "When we saw that the shelves were cleared, we said to ourselves, 'We got to get cooking. We got to get cooking because people need it,'" said Melanie.From neighborhood shops to big box stores, Cannizzaro Sauces were filling shelves when other products were out of stock. "A normal order for us from our distributor maybe once a month is about 60 cases, and then our first order after this happened, and it happened very quickly, it was for 225. And then another one, and then another one, and we were just in here triple time," said Melanie.They even had to bring in help. "Our cars are full of hundreds of pounds of tomatoes. I mean, it was everything we could think of to do. We were bringing friends in who lost their jobs could come in and help us label," said Melanie. Their business is a unique success story in the midst of so many shutdowns and losses for family businesses this year. "I work for a family-owned restaurant. That's my other job, my ‘job job,’ and it's been hard to watch it. We're lucky that we happened to pick something that we love to do that survives this. Who would have thought? So, we're lucky, and we're hopeful for everybody else," said Melanie.That luck is something so many other local businesses have been wishing for but haven’t seen. However, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) said online shops and the movement to support small business is only growing."The hope is still there, but we’ve seen more go out of business this year than we saw in 2008 and 2009. But, we’ve anecdotally heard from them, things are better," said Tom Bartholomy, with the BBB. That may be in part because shoppers are making more of an effort to find local businesses. According to a Nextdoor survey, 72 percent of members said they will frequent local businesses more often, even after this crisis. The National Retail Federation says nearly half of all shoppers have made a purchase specifically to support local, small businesses during the pandemic. "I hear that a lot: ‘We want to support local. We want to support local,’" said Tritten.It’s a trend this couple is paying forward with their own work. They’re collecting homemade items from other family-owned businesses and boxing them up for Christmas. "We made a ‘Local Loves’ basket with elderberry syrup, like all sorts of things that people like to get and made these really cute baskets with them, and they're flying. We made 20 of them yesterday for one customer. So now, we can keep going and finding more and more local people, pandemic or not, to keep making those baskets all year," Melanie said.The Trittens are hoping the love they have for their business will be felt by all who taste their sauces."The reaction that people get trying to for the first time is probably one of the most rewarding things for me."They say the silver lining this pandemic brought them is a blessing they will dedicate their lives to protecting. The couple says their hope is to be able to hire more people and create more jobs. 4110

Cathedral High School in Indianapolis announced the official name change of its entrepreneurship course to the "Chris Beaty Entrepreneurship Class."Chris Beaty was an Indianapolis business owner and former Indiana University football player who was beloved in the community.Beaty was one of two men who were shot and killed when violence erupted during police brutality demonstrations in Downtown Indianapolis. He was 38."There was so much pain caused by Chris's tragic murder, I felt it was too narrow to hear him only referred to as a former Cathedral and IU football player," Alex Purvis, who played football with Beaty at Cathedral High School in the early 2000's, said. "Chris was so much more than that, and I want to do my part to make sure his legacy continues at Cathedral."Purvis spearheaded the initiative to make the name change of the private school's entrepreneur course because he wanted to make sure Beaty was known for more than just football. Purvis says Beaty was not only an entrepreneur but says he was a friend, he was compassionate, and he always made people feel welcomed."He made everyone feel like a VIP. Few people have that ability," Purvis said.Purvis only knew Beaty for one year at Cathedral — but that was enough for Beaty to make an impact on Purvis.Purvis described himself as, "the smallest kid on the football team" his sophomore year, and Beaty was a senior star-athlete."Years later, when I started running into Chris downtown and various events, Chris always made me feel like I was the star quarterback on Cathedral's team. For no other reason than that was his genuine personality—he made people feel special. His warmth and positivity was infectious," Purvis said.Purvis said to best #LiveLikeChris, it's fitting to name Cathedral's entrepreneurship class in Beaty's honor. Beaty was always working on "the next big thing," Purvis said."I think the root of entrepreneurship is having the ability to take an idea and outlining the steps to make it happen," Purvis said. "That's exactly what Chris did. He was a doer, a leader, and a builder—his friends turned into business partners and vice versa."Both Cathedral High School and Indiana University have also created the "Chris Beaty Foundation Scholarship," in his honor."Using that foundation and exploring entrepreneurship in high school will hopefully open students' eyes to all of the possibilities they have in college and beyond. Students should know they are capable of creating their path, just like Chris Beaty did," Purvis said. "And they should know that they, too, have what it takes to live like Chris. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) — An East County resident happened upon a massive surprise Friday morning.A wayward tortoise was found by the resident on Buckman Springs Rd. in Campo Friday. A San Diego County Department of Animal Serivces officer responded to the report but immediately realized he would not be able to lift the animal on his own.A Cal Fire crew arrived to help get the tortoise out of the yard, coaxing it onto a stretcher and then lifting the heavy reptile into an Animal Services vehicle.The tortoise was then taken to the department's Bonita shelter.While it's unclear how the massive animal ended up in the East County yard, Animal Services said someone called soon after the catch to report it may have been their tortoise, aptly named "Tank." CARLSBAD (KGTV) — A woman visiting Legoland in Carlsbad was stunned when she spotted someone angling their phone into her changing stall at the water park. "I saw a phone at the corner, which is under the divider of the stalls. So I called out to that person, 'Excuse me, what's that phone doing there?'" Carisma Jucaban recalled.She thought it may have been a child or just an accident, but it was not."As soon as I heard the door open, I ran out to take a look, but he was already making a turn. And I was kind of standing there like, 'What just happened?' My husband is looking at me like, What's going on?' I was like, 'Did you see that guy?'" Jucaban explained.Jucaban immediately reported the man to Legoland security and within hours they found him. Carlsbad police arrested 26-year-old Anthony Galindo of Los Angeles. "They looked through his phone and found a bunch of disturbing — they didn't really specify what it was — I don't really want to know. And from there, the police arrested him," she said.Legoland released a statement that reads in part: "Park staff acted promptly as the safety and security of park guests is the number one priority. Park officials are assisting Carlsbad police with the investigation."The information about the suspect's phone was given to Jucaban by security. It has not been verified by Carlsbad police. 1356

CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested after reportedly assaulting two Border Patrol agents as they attempted to arrest him for trying to smuggle people into the U.S. According to the agency, the incident happened around 1:17 a.m. Tuesday as agents patrolled Interstate 8 in Campo. Agents tried to stop a 2007 Ford F-350 near Kitchen Creek Road when the driver took off, leading agents on a high-speed chase. RELATED: 14-year-old tried to smuggle meth strapped to body, CBP saysAccording to Border Patrol, agents successfully deployed a tire deflation device, forcing the vehicle to stop a short distance later, but the driver got out and fled on foot. As agents searched for man, he reportedly jumped out of a nearby bush, tackling one of the officers to the ground. A second agent also responded to the scene, struggling with the suspect as well. Inside the F-350, agents found three men and one woman, all Mexican nationals in the U.S. illegally. They were all taken to a Border Patrol station for processing and the suspect, identified as a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested.
