NEW ORLEANS, La. – In the middle of Mardi Gras and just a few blocks off Bourbon Street in New Orleans, there’s an ink master leaving permanent marks on multiple generations. Jacci Gresham is known to many as America’s first black female tattoo artist. When we met Gresham, she was tattooing the jawline of one of her workers. “It’s an honor to get a panther from Jacci,” said the woman getting the tattoo. “Because she’s like the blackest panther of them all.” Gresham started tattooing in an era when women – especially black women – weren’t involved or even respected in the industry. “At that time women weren’t recognized as tattoo artists,” she said. “So, especially to see a black woman doing tattoos was kind of unusual – to see a woman doing tattoos was unusual.” Gresham gave her first tattoo in her home state of Michigan in 1972. After losing her job in the automotive industry, she moved to New Orleans and opened up what would become the city’s oldest tattoo shop – Aart Accent Tattoos and Body Piercing. Along the way, Gresham estimates that she’s inked thousands of people from all kinds of cultures – including a member of the Ku Klux Klan. “It was interesting to talk to somebody from a Klan’s person that would allow a black person to tattoo them,” she said. “And the reason why he allowed me to tattoo him – or so he said – was because I gave a good tattoo.” Gresham believes a good tattoo can help break down old racial barriers while also inspiring younger artists. “I see it every day here,” she said. “We do quite a cross section of people. I have black artists, white artists, Spanish artists. And people are looking for the art. They’re not looking at the who actually did the work.” Now in her 70s, Gresham is still perfecting her craft while adding art to human canvases with the hope her impact lasts longer than the tattoo ink that runs skin deep.“Stay on that grind,” she said. “If it’s in your heart, you can’t give it up.” 1969

A toddler was found in a cage during an animal rescue operation in Henry County.Henry County, Tennessee, Sheriff’s deputies raided a home with several outbuildings in the northern portion of the county Thursday.The child, who is under the age of two, was found in a cage in the same room as several large constricting snakes next to a box of live mice. The child was filthy, but unharmed and is now in DCS custody. A source said the reptiles could have easily killed the toddler.Deputies found several large marijuana plants and the group rescued more than 100 animals from the home.District attorney Matt Stowe says the child's parents and a grandparent were taken into custody. Communities across the country are trying to find the answer to the opioid crisis.Illinois is testing out a program that lets doctors give patients access to medical marijuana instead of an opioid prescription in an effort to combat opioid addiction. For Philadelphia radio host Britt Carpenter, marijuana helped him get clean. Now, he uses his experience as a chance to pay it forward by using his voice to speak with those dealing with issues like addiction. "I was addicted to opioids for many years,” Carpenter admits. “I started back in the early 2000s after a car accident." To treat his injury, doctors gave him pain killers. Similar to many others, what was supposed to help him, nearly destroyed him. The pain pills led to a heroin addiction. "I fell into a bad situation again,” he recalls. “Met the wrong person and went down the pathway of hell for a few years after that." Now, Carpenter is four years sober. However, rehab was not his savior. "I looked at different ways I could help myself go clean off the opioids, and one of them I did extensive research on: utilizing cannabis," Carpenter says. The radio personality kicked narcotics with cannabis. For years, Carpenter had used marijuana recreationally, but this time, pot helped him detox. "I wasn't feeling as shaky as most people, or as I had done before when I tried to go clean, I wasn't sweating as much,” he says. “I was able to have an appetite. I was able to gain almost 40 pounds." However, as helpful as cannabis was for him, it’s illegal in his home state of Pennsylvania. But now, some states that have not legalized marijuana are realizing cannabis can be an answer to the opioid crisis. In Illinois, around 1,500 patients have taken part in the state’s pilot program where doctors can give patients access to medical marijuana as an alternative to opioids. While Carpenter will say marijuana was the answer for him, he says it may not for be for everyone. "I don't encourage them to just go buy the cannabis and say, ‘OK, this is what I'm going to do,’” he says. “I had to sit down; I had a really come up with a plan." To those who don't believe in the power of this plant, Carpenter recommends they give it a chance and to give others a chance in the fight against addiction. "If you don't feel it's the right thing for somebody that is going into recovery or trying to go clean off of opioids, don't balk at it. Do research and figure out what's there,” he says. “Find out how positive the results can be, because I believe I’m living proof of that." 2555

A Southern Arizona school district is taking a creative approach to better sanitize the classroom daily.Santa Cruz Valley School District bought six Power Breezers that will disinfect a classroom in 20 minutes.Superintendent David Verdugo said the school district did this as a cost effective way to provide extra safety and security to students and staff.He said it will be used after school to clean empty classrooms, hallways and even school buses.Each unit costs about 4,500 dollars."This is an opportunity for them to look at a way to sanitize a room in a short period of time and utilize their staff but also be cost effective," Superintendent Verdugo said.He said the district is also requiring all students to wear masks, have their temperature checked, and social distance in and out of the classroom.Every classroom will only be at 50% capacity, meaning 15 desks per room, he said. In order to do this, the district came up with a hybrid approach to learning."There will be a group A and a group B," Superintendent Verdugo said. "The group A students will be on Monday. They will come to school, have their direct instruction and then they will be at home the next day. Then, group B will come to school, but they will still have some interaction that day with assignments and virtual opportunities."He said the district is planning on starting remote learning on August 3 and then the hybrid approach will being on August 31.
