NEW YORK (AP AND CNN) — A sharp loss for Facebook is helping to pull technology companies lower as stock indexes decline in early trading.Facebook slumped 5.3 percent early Monday. The company is facing new criticism following reports that a data mining firm employed by the Trump campaign improperly kept data on tens of millions of users.CNN reported that that Cambridge Analytica, a data firm with ties to President Donald Trump's campaign, reportedly gained access to information about 50 million Facebook users.The data was collected by a professor for academic purposes in accordance with Facebook rules, the company said. But then the information was transferred to third parties, including Cambridge Analytica. The transfer violated Facebook policies.Facebook's stock was on pace for its biggest loss in four years. The sharp loss also dragged tech companies lower for as U.S. stock indexes skid. Chipmaker Nvidia lost 1.1 percent.Shopping mall owner GGP was unchanged percent after Reuters reported the company had received a revised takeover offer.The S&P 500 fell 17 points, or 0.6 percent, to 2,734.The Dow Jones industrial average lost 174 points, or 0.7 percent, to 24,772. NEW YORK — Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the passage of legislation that prohibits domestic abusers from possessing handguns and long guns as part of his 2018 Women's Agenda.Previously, there was a loophole in which domestic abusers only had to surrender handguns, they must now surrender all firearms."The recent wave of mass shootings is horrifying, and the federal government's failure to act on any form of meaningful gun safety laws is unconscionable," Governor Cuomo said. "New York is once again leading the way to prevent gun violence, and with this common sense reform, break the inextricable link between gun violence and domestic violence.This legislation builds on our gun laws -- already the strongest in the nation-- to make New York safer and stronger." New York law previously prohibited the possession of firearms for those convicted of a felony or a limited number of misdemeanor "serious" offenses. This legislation expands the list of "serious" crimes, which will lead to the loss of a gun license and the surrender of all firearms for those who are convicted.This legislation will also restrict any individual with an arrest warrant from obtaining or renewing a firearm license which was previously not the case.Governor Cuomo cites the fact that in nine of the last 10 mass shootings, the shooter had an existing record of committing or threatening violence against women or harassing them. 1447

NEW YORK -- A bodega clerk who was attacked by a customer in New York City is concerned mask laws will get someone killed, he said Sunday.Javier Franco and Aneuri Castillo were in a Morrisania bodega several weeks ago when they were attacked. Franco was stacking the shelves when he asked a customer to put on a mask. The customer punched him in the face.“The mask law is going to get someone killed," Franco said. "We are doing our best trying to obey the law so we don’t lose our liquor license, but it seems we could lose our life instead."Castillo was smacked in a mask confrontation with a customer."This was shocking to me," he said. "I tried to do what the governor asked us. I told him it was the law. I’m scared! Maybe he’ll come back and shoot me. It’s so hard coming to work not knowing how the day will go. I have a family and they need me, I don’t want to die in the bodega."United Bodegas of America spokesman Fernando Mateo said both incidents happened within minutes of one another. NEW YORK (AP) — The one-time bookselling giant Barnes & Noble is being acquired by a hedge fund for 6 million.The national chain that many blamed for the demise of independent bookstores has been ravaged by Amazon.com and other online sellers. Independent bookstores have also persisted in the face of digital publishing.The company said in October that it might put itself up for sale after it was approached by a number of potential buyers, including founder Leonard Riggio who opened Barnes & Noble stores across the country and turned it into a superstore.Barnes & Noble said Friday that it's being acquired by Elliott Management for .50 per share, an approximately 9% percent premium to the company's Thursday closing stock price. Elliott bought the U.K. bookseller Waterstones in June 2018.Waterstones CEO James Daunt will also take on the role of CEO at Barnes & Noble.The sale, valued at about 3 million including debt, is targeted to close in the third quarter if approved by regulators and shareholders.Shares of the New York company jumped 11% before the opening bell. 1111

NORTH READING, Mass. – An off-duty police officer in Massachusetts is being credited with saving three people from an early morning house fire on Tuesday.The North Reading Police Department says Sgt. Thomas Encarnacao had just finished his shift and was on his way home when he noticed flames emerging from inside the home.After alerting dispatch of the fire, Encarnacao entered the home to alert the residents. He was able to locate a man sleeping on a coach at the front of the house and helped him outside to safety, according to police.The man told Encarnacao and other officers who had arrived to help that there were two more residents in the home, a 13-year-old boy sleeping in a back bedroom and a man in the basement of the home.The man in the basement was able to get out on his own after officers alerted him, but police say first responders had to pull the boy out through a window of a smoke-filled room.All three residents were evaluated by EMS at the scene and didn’t go to the hospital. No firefighters were injured. One officer suffered a cut to his hand while attempting to breach a basement window.Firefighters were able to put the blaze out, but the house ended up sustaining smoke, fire and water damage. Police say the residents were displaced and are being assisted by family members.The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.“The work of the three officers this morning was truly courageous, and I am incredibly proud of them,” said Police Chief Michael Murphy. “Sgt. Encarnacao took decisive and immediate action, which very likely saved the lives of the residents inside the house. Once he got the first resident out, all three officers went back into the house, without protective gear, to look for additional residents. Their actions to get all of the residents out safely was truly heroic.” 1841
