BOAO, Hainan, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Entrepreneurs and economists of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have considered the expected signing of a cross-Strait economic pact as a top priority in further development of their trade relations.The long-awaited Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), aiming to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer, is hoped to be signed by the end of June.Fredrick Chien, chief advisor of Taiwan's Cross-Straits Common Market Foundation, said here Sunday the ECFA will be an "extremely important" agreement to strengthen future development of cross-Strait relations."As long as we make this stride, the cross-Strait economic and trade exchanges will get much closer," Chien said at the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference which concluded Sunday in southern island province of Hainan.He jointly presided over a round-table meeting with Dai Xianglong, chairman of the mainland's National Council for Social Security Fund.

GOTEBORG, Sweden, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a deal worth 1.8 billion U.S. dollars with Ford Motor Co. here Sunday to acquire the U.S. auto giant's Volvo car unit.Under the definitive stock purchase deal, Geely will own 100 percent of Volvo Cars and its related assets.The agreement was inked by Li Shufu, founder and chairman of Geely, and Lewis Booth, chief financial officer of Ford, at a ceremony at the headquarters of Volvo in Goteborg, the second largest city of Sweden. Geely Chairman Li Shufu attends a press conference after the signing ceremony in Goteborg of Sweden, March 28, 2010. BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises (SOEs) raked in a combined profit of 325.99 billion yuan (47.7 billion U.S. dollars) in the first four months of the year, the industry authorities announced here Wednesday.The profit figure in the January-April period represents 81.7 percent growth year on year, the State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) said in a statement on its website.Centrally controlled SOE's combined operating revenue hit 4.89 trillion yuan in the period, up 50.4 percent year on year, the statement said.While the statement did not specify the reasons for the profit and revenue increases, experts from the SASAC research center attributed the surge to last year's low comparison basis when Chinese firms were hit hard by the global economic downturn.There are currently 126 centrally-administered SOEs under the SASAC.

CHENGDU, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Top legislator Wu Bangguo has told authorities in Sichuan Province that post-quake reconstruction should continue to be the top priority.Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, made the remarks when visiting the quake zone in southwest China from May 20 to 24. SUZHOU, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China's police chief Meng Jianzhu Saturday called for nationwide coordination to beef up security for the Shanghai World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.Meng, a State Councilor and Minister of Public Security, made the call in a inspection tour to Suzhou city in Shanghai's neighboring province Jiangsu, where he urged police in Shanghai and its adjoining provinces to execute more security efforts.He asked the police in Shanghai, the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang to fully recognize the challenge and complexity of the security work, and to speed up the building of a coordination mechanism among them.Security departments must step up efforts to detect and remove all kinds of security threats, be fully prepared for challenges, and minimize the affect of the security work on people's lives, he said.
