(AP) — A bald eagle launched an aerial assault on a drone operated by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy — which is known as EGLE — ripping off a propeller and sending the aircraft into Lake Michigan. The department says the attack happened July 21, when the drone was mapping shoreline erosion near Escanaba in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Drone pilot Hunter King says he had completed about seven minutes of the mapping flight when satellite reception became spotty and the drone began to twirl. King and two birdwatchers saw the eagle flying away, apparently unhurt. Tracking data indicates the drone landed in the lake, about 150 feet offshore. It has not been found. 723

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — One person is dead and a driver is at large following a hit-and-run collision in Escondido.A vehicle collided with a bicyclist on La Honda Road north of El Norte Parkway at about noon, according to the Escondido Police Department."The rider was wearing a helmet, and we are still investigating the cause as to what happened and how the car and bicyclist crashed," Lt. Scott Walters with the Escondido Police Department said. The cyclist was part of a larger group going southbound on La Honda Drive. Witnesses of the crash saw the 36-year-old victim from Vista fly off his mountain bike and die at the scene. Investigator said the driver of the car never stopped and continued going northbound on La Honda Drive. A short while later, investigators got a break in the case. The mangled car was spotted on the 600-block of Aster Street, just a half-mile away from the crash site. 10News spoke to neighbors watching the commotion, who said they did not recognize the sedan. The victim's identity was not immediately released.Police advised the public to avoid the area for about five hours after the crash. Access to Dixon Lake and Daley Ranch Recreation Areas was closed, but hikers and bikers were able to access Daley Ranch through Cougar Pass in north Escondido, police added. 1312

(KGTV) - The dramatic collapse of a tree in front of an Escondido family’s home was caught on camera during a Red Flag Warning Tuesday.Mike and Selene Neumann woke up to howling winds early Tuesday morning at their home on Pico de la Loma.Selene walked out to record video and saw a 60-foot tall tree laying across the yard and the top of their 1997 BMW Z3 Roadster.The tree, an Italian Cypress, mangled the convertible top, shattered the windows, and bent the door.When the Neumanns saw the video from their Ring camera, they were “astounded”.The fallen tree had been in place since the home was built in 1979.Experts checked out other trees on the Neumann’s property and removed a similar Italian Cypress near the uprooted tree. 756

ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - In one of the closest races this election cycle in San Diego County, Escondido Mayor Sam Abed added nine votes to his narrow lead Tuesday. He now holds a 29-vote advantage over challenger Paul McNamara.Abed is seeking a third term as mayor, first winning in 2010. He was previously a councilman from 2004-2010.Political analyst John Dadian told 10News he did not anticipate the race being so close. "I did not see it coming, so I am suprised. Going into the last week of the campaign, all the people I talked to that really know that area well, they did not see this coming."Dadian feels several factors are playing a role in tightening the race. He cites changing demographics in Escondido, pulling away from the city's long-time conservative majority. Another conservative incumbent, Ed Gallo, appears to be losing his seat, as well.In addition, Democrats in the region had a large turnout, based largely on the unsuccessful effort to oust Congressman Duncan Hunter. That large turnout may have had a down-ballot effect on the mayoral race.Dadian also sites Abed's controversial stance on immigration, leading Escondido's bid to support efforts against California's sanctuary laws and visiting the White House for a highly-publicized meeting with President Trump.
