CAPE LOOKOUT, N.C. (AP) — The National Park Service says scientists are trying to determine the cause of death of an endangered whale calf that was found stranded on a beach on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.The young whale is considered to be “one of the rarest marine mammals” on earth, according to NPS.Biologists performed a necropsy on the North Atlantic right whale calf and took DNA samples Saturday.NPS at Cape Lookout National Seashore posted news of the whale’s death on its Facebook page.Right whales are critically endangered. The park service says only about 360 of the animals are still alive and about five or six calves are born each year. 661

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - A brush fire on base at Camp Pendleton was visible above North San Diego County Monday afternoon.Camp Pendleton officials reported the vegetation fire was located on range 409, at the northeast end of the base.The smoke was reported in the Fallbrook area near the base, according to North County Fire. SDG&E's Alert fire camera showed a large plume from the Red Mountain viewpoint."There is no threat to our district at this time," North County Fire tweeted. Camp Pendleton officials confirmed there was no danger to structures.Base officials said on Twitter later Monday night that the forward progress of the fire had been stopped. CARLSBAD, Calif. —  Two bodies were found with gunshot wounds in front of a Carlsbad home Tuesday night, just east of Batiquitos Lagoon. The Carlsbad Police were alerted to the situation when they got a 911 call from a man saying he was going to commit suicide in the 2500 block of Navarra Drive, according to police. When they arrived at the home they found a 71-year-old man and 79-year-old woman both with visible gunshot wounds. A handgun was recovered at the scene.Both the man and woman are residents of Carlsbad. Their names are being withheld until family has been notified the by medical examiner.Carlsbad police tell 10News that the preliminary investigation indicates that the pair were married and each suffering from a different medical condition.There are no outstanding suspects and police are investigating the deaths as a possible murder-suicide situation.   943

(KGTV) -- Customers of the Campo Group Water System are being advised that the county has issued a drinking water warning after samples found increased levels of nitrates.Sample results found that on September 2, 2020, nitrate levels exceeded the maximum contaminant level for safe drinking water.The group serves a mini mart, gasoline station, and an office, according to the county.Nitrates in drinking water are a health concern for infants less than six-months-old and pregnant women are advised not to consume the water.“Boiling, freezing, filtering, or letting water stand does not reduce the nitrate level,” the county said.The Campo Group Water System is providing bottled water until nitrate levels fall below the maximum contaminant level, the county said. 788
