MEXICO CITY, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The Mexican government signed an agreement with the non-governmental group TRAFFIC on Tuesday to exchange information about illegal seizures of flora and fauna species in Mexico.The agreement with the wildlife trade monitoring network also called for the Mexican government to provide information on the routes used to transport such organic materials.The agreement was signed on the sideline of the 16th meeting of the Trilateral Committee for Wildlife and Ecosystem Conservation Management in the city of Oaxaca, south Mexico. Representatives of Canada, the United States and Mexico also attended the meeting.Among the list of 20,000 animals, vegetation and insects that TRAFFIC considers to be threatened by illegal trafficking worldwide, 2,500 of the organisms have their origins in Mexico. This amounts to 12 percent of the species most subject to buying, selling and transporting in the black market and threatens the survival of various ecosystems.The Mexican species that are listed among the most threatened by illegal trafficking are the cactus, orchids, reptiles, maguey plants, ferns, amphibians and fish.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Web exploit toolkits, or " packaged" attack frameworks that can be traded online, are rapidly growing as the top cybercrime weapon due to ease of use and high success rate, a new report has found."When it comes to conducting online crime, exploit toolkits are the weapon of choice for many cyber criminals," said the "2010 Top Cyber Security Risks Report" published by Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) on Monday.The trend started in 2006 with the release of WebAttacker, considered by many to be the first modern day web exploit toolkit, according to the report.An emerging trend ensued and soon took off, and today the Internet is subjected to hundreds of exploits originating from these toolkits."With the ever-increasing, web-based criminal activity, the number of exploit toolkits has skyrocketed and shows no signs of slowing down," the report stated.Though protecting against attacks originated with web exploit toolkits is becoming increasingly difficult, there are ways to minimize the risk of infection, said the report, noting that one of the most effective defenses is to install patches onto host systems.The report also found that while the number of attacks against known vulnerabilities continues to rise, the number of discovered vulnerabilities has plateaued in 2010."We've discovered that rather than investing resources to uncover new exploits, attackers are focused on current, unpatched vulnerabilities in web applications, social networking sites and Web 2.0 interfaces," Mike Dausin, a manager at HP Digital Vaccine Labs, said in a statement.Data from the report showed that nearly half of all reported vulnerabilities exist in web applications, and third-party plug- ins to content management systems have become the leading cause of web application vulnerabilities.

BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority announced on Monday that it has received 7.5 million yuan from the country's Ministry of Finance to strengthen its efforts in fighting persistent drought in some regions.The fund would be used to support efforts by meteorological departments in Shanxi, Hebei, Anhui, Shandong, and Henan provinces, all major crop-producing regions, to conduct activities for seeding clouds and making artificial rain, according to a statement posted on the National Meteorological Administration website.Government data shows that a prolonged drought since last October had affected 108.24 million mu (7.22 million hectares) of wheat crops in those provinces, as well as Jiangsu, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, as of Sunday.The statement added that some of the affected regions experienced two rounds of snowfall last week, which were helpful in alleviating the drought. However, the major wheat-growing provinces of Shandong and Henan recorded no rainfall.The country's meteorological authority also predicted no significant rainfall or heavy snowfall for the dry regions over the next three days. BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the ruling Forces pour la Defense de la Democratie (FDD) of Burundi said Tuesday the FDD hopes to strengthen cooperation with the Communist Party of China (CPC) and to further enhance the "brotherly friendship" with the CPC.Mohamed Rukara, vice president of the Council of Elders, the top decision-making body of the FDD, said in an interview with Xinhua that there are a lot of ruling experiences of CPC that the FDD can learn from.He said the CPC has gained great achievements in China's reform and opening up, realizing sustainable development, developing science and technology and striking corruption.He said Burundi has set "sustainable development" as the slogan for the 2010-2015 period, and he believed that his country can learn from China's successful experiences of reform and opening up and realize the goal of shaking off poverty by 2020-2025.Rukara, who is also a ombudsman, said corruption has been a big challenge facing his country, and he believed the FDD can learn from the CPC in this regard, as the latter has been combating corruption very hard and effectively.Appreciating China's aid and contribution to the development of Burundi, Rukara said the two parties and the two countries have had very good relations based on mutual respect.He welcomed more Chinese enterprises to invest in Burundi to support its development, and "the door will always be open to our brother."At the invitation of the CPC, Rukara is heading an FDD delegation for a visit to China starting from Saturday.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Google on Tuesday launched its long-awaited cloud-based music service Music Beta without any label licenses it originally wanted.The search giant introduced the digital music locker service at its annual I/O developer conference in San Francisco. So far, only U.S. users can access the service by requesting an invitation from Google while priorities will be given to those with the Verizon version of the Motorola Xoom tablet and attendees of the I/O conference.Since Google failed to come to a license agreement with major music labels, Music Beta is essentially a massive cloud hard drive. Users cannot share their Music Beta by Google tunes or purchase new songs. It allows users to upload 20,000 songs into the cloud, compared with Amazon Cloud Drive's 2,000 songs and 5 GB limit for free accounts.Any web-connected devices with a browser or supporting Flash can stream music from the digital locker, but the service is only for Android-powered devices.Music Beta also gets Instant Mix, a similar intelligent feature to Apple's Genius playlist creator, which creates new playlists based on a single song by analyzing its characteristics.Before unveiling the service, Google told U.S. media Monday night that the current Music Beta is not the service Google had wanted to offer and it will continue to seek licenses with major music labels.
