SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With nearly a dozen casinos in San Diego County, a local gaming expert says the region has become oversaturated creating too much competition.This is forcing the county's gaming resorts to focus less on gambling and more towards becoming an entertainment destination to help drive revenues.Others are laying off staff.The news comes amid a string of critical headlines targeting some local casinos.RELATED: Controversial 0M Jamul casino opens its doors, creates traffic problems in area?Last week, the developers and operators of Hollywood Casino declared in a filing that it was pulling out of a contract with the Jamul Indian Village, citing nearly million in losses. The Pala Casino Resort and Spa also confirmed that there will be layoffs, citing pressure from an increasingly competitive casino market in Southern California.Longtime gaming expert Dave Palermo says with the addition of the Hollywood Casino, the market just got very competitive for San Diego County’s 10 casinos.RELATED: Sycuan Casino breaks ground on new hotel and resort expansion?As far as the overall gaming market in the state, Palermo says it’s holding pretty steady with annual gaming revenues increasing about five percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, a record-breaking 3.7 million acres have already burned in more than 8-thousand wildfires this year.Both Cal Fire San Diego and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are preparing to respond to potential fire disasters, as dangerous weather conditions return to San Diego County.“We know the potential is there,” said Thomas Shoots, a public information officer for Cal Fire. “We’re holding all our firefighters on duty, and we’re staffing on every piece of equipment to make sure we’re covered, we’ve brought on contract dozers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two weeks after their son was killed, the parents of Alexander Mazin spoke to 10News for the first time about the brutal attack.Penelope and Jeffrey Mazin say their son left for the 24 Hour Fitness gym on Midway Dr. around 9 a.m. on Feb. 25, 2018.“I said 'I love you' and I kissed him on his little fuzzy beard,” remembered his mom, “and he walked out the door. I’m glad I saw him that morning.”He was scheduled to meet with his dad at noon, but by 12:05, his parents were already worried. He was never late.They started calling hospitals and police stations. Little did they know, officers were already searching for him.“Two plainclothes detectives in black cars pulled up and my heart sunk because I knew right then and there something horrible must have happened,” said Jeffrey.The suspect in the case has been identified as Ernesto Castellanos.The Mazins say Castellanos was in a previous relationship with their son’s girlfriend. They say Alexander had been dating the woman for about three months but kept their relationship somewhat private.There were warning signs. Two weeks before the killing, they say Castellanos had attacked the woman while she was working out with Mazin at a 24 Hour Fitness.Castellanos’ whereabouts are unknown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In honor of Veterans Day, dozens of volunteers found a way to give back to current active duty military service members.The organization Waves of Appreciation packed thousands of "Appreciation bags" filled with snacks for service members traveling through San Diego during the holidays.Volunteers fill the bags assembly line style. This program started in 2011 when the founder of the event saw a military service member traveling alone during the holidays, exhausted and hungry. Since then volunteers have handed out more than 24,000 bags.Waves of Appreciation is looking for volunteers to pass out the goodie bags at Lindbergh Field in December in time for the holidays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two young teenagers have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the deadly shooting of a College Area man. According to San Diego Police, the two juveniles, ages 14 and 15 were taken into custody and placed into Juvenile Hall. “The names of the juveniles will not be released due to their age,” police said. 39-year-old Ishi Hampton was shot and killed on May 2 outside the “Iconic at Alvarado” apartments in the College Area. At some point, investigators say they shot him and ran toward Alvarado Hospital.
