Cat owners in a small New Zealand village have been given paws for thought after a local council pledged to carry out a ban on the animals.According to a "pest plan" put forward by Environment Southland, cat owners in Omaui, on the country's South Island, will have to neuter, microchip and register their cats with local authorities. The proposal states that when the cat dies, owners will not be allowed to purchase a new one."There's cats getting into the native bush; they're preying on native birds, they're taking insects, they're taking reptiles -- all sorts of things," biosecurity operations manager Ali Meade told the Newshub news service."They're doing quite a bit of damage."The proposal is also being backed by Omaui Landcare Charitable Trust Chairman John Collins, who says removing cats from the area would enable native animals to thrive.''We're not cat haters, but we want our environment to be wildlife-rich," he told the Otago Times.''Native wildlife is disappearing rapidly around the country and places like this where people still live and enjoy and hear the birdsong are probably few and far between,'' Collins said.Submissions on the Southland regional pest management plan close on October 23.New Zealand is currently embarking on an ambitious plan to become predator-free by 2050 with plans to eradicate species of possums, stoats and rats.The-CNN-Wire 1385

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — LEGOLAND California helped make the season bright for one lucky 11-year-old who in return, helped usher in the holidays at the park.Gideon Robinson, an 11-year-old cancer survivor from Lake Elsinore, and his family helped the park light its 30-foot tall LEGO Christmas tree in the park's Fun Town. After pulling the switch, Robinson helped illuminate the tree's 11,000+ twinkling lights, which is set atop more than 400 LEGO decorations and 245,000 green DUPLO bricks.Robinson was given a star ornament and special invitation to the park's LEGO Movie World expansion set to open next year. He and his family were also treated to a stay at the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel.Robinson is a two-time cancer survivor who was first diagnosed with acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia a week after his fifth birthday and again in 2019 after a short remission before receiving news that he had beaten leukemia."During these unprecedented times when so many are faced with challenges, it’s positive stories such as Gideon’s that provide inspiration to all of us," said LEGOLAND California Resort President Kurt Stocks. "It’s an absolute pleasure and honor to have Gideon and his family officially light the LEGO Christmas tree this year and help LEGOLAND California bring some holiday hope to families this winter." 1324

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — A German father and son had the summer vacation of a lifetime spanning seven countries, eight cities, and eight theme parks.Better yet, they pulled off the feat in a mere 13 days.Dieter Deussen and his five-year-old son, Julian, finished the last leg of their journey to visit all Legoland theme parks in the world Tuesday. Deussen began the trek wanting to give his son a special experience before he starts school for the first time in September, according to Legoland.RELATED: Legoland offers guests free admission on their birthday in 2019His son being a big Lego fan, Deussen suggested the global tour. The trip took the father eight months of planning, hours he said he would never trade. “100 percent it was worth it. To see Julian smile so much at every park and interact with children from around the world, regardless of the language difference, was amazing for me to see. I would absolutely do it again," Deussen said.In less than two weeks, the duo completed a world tour of all eight of the theme parks:June 27 – LEGOLAND Windsor June 28 – LEGOLAND BillundJune 30 – LEGOLAND DeutschlandJuly 1 – LEGOLAND DubaiJuly 3 – LEGOLAND MalaysiaJuly 5 – LEGOLAND JapanJuly 7 – LEGOLAND CaliforniaJuly 8-9 – LEGOLAND FloridaIn Carlsbad, the father and son began their stay at the Legoland Castle Hotel, before exploring Miniland U.S.A, the deep sea on the Lego City Deep Sea Adventure Submarine ride, and meeting a throng of Lego characters. And, of course, playing with a bunch of Legos.RELATED: Recreation Destination: San Diego ranks at top of U.S. citiesLegoland says the pair's journey isn't quite complete though. CARMEL, Ind. — Hundreds of people from all different faiths gathered at a Carmel synagogue to show their love for the Jewish community after someone left hateful anti-Semitic graffiti on one of their buildings. The ground was burned and swastikas and iron crosses were painted on a shed and garbage bins at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla on Saturday. RELATED: Anti-Semitic graffiti found at Carmel synagogueRabbi Benjamin Sendrow says the graffiti may have been left to evoke fear, but as Monday night's gathering showed, it's had the opposite effect on their community. "(It) triggered an outpouring of love and support that wipes away their action better than bleach and fresh paint," Sendrow said. "All they have done is awaken the sleeping giant of love and acceptance and mutual respect."But in the midst of love, those hateful messages also serve as a reminder that Indiana is one of only five states that doesn't have a hate crime law — something Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and several other lawmakers vowed to fix in the upcoming legislative session. Lindsey Mintz, Executive Director of the Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council, says passing that law is more important now than ever, to "send a message.""The state of Indiana from policy leaders on down will not stand for acts of hate based on bias," Mintz said.Synagogue leadership says the graffiti will not be cleaned off right away so it can be preserved as evidence as Carmel police continue to investigate and follow all leads to find out who is responsible.   1602

CHICAGO, Ill. – Chicago’s police commissioner says more than 100 people were arrested following a night of looting and unrest that left 13 officers injured and caused damage in the city’s upscale Magnificent Mile shopping district and other parts of the city.Police Superintendent David Brown says it “was not an organized protest” but instead “an incident of pure criminality” that began following the shooting of a person by police the previous day in the city's Englewood neighborhood. It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the unrest, which began shortly after midnight, but anti-police graffiti was seen in the area.At one point early Monday, shots were fired at police and officers returned fire. Many of the businesses that were ransacked had recently opened after Chicago protests of George Floyd’s May 25 death in Minneapolis devolved into chaos.Brown says a heavy police presence is expected in the downtown area until further notice.Mayor Lori Lightfoot described it as “straight up, felony criminal conduct” and “an assault on our city." 1057
