SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County Fire is offering some residents key safe boxes that allow first responders to gain access to homes in emergency situations, County News Center reports.The boxes, called KnoxBoxes, are installed on or near the front door and can only be opened by local firefighters responding to life-threatening emergencies, the county says.County Supervisor Dianne Jacob says the program fulfills an urgent need.“For older folks with chronic health conditions or in need of help with basic activities, KnoxBoxes can be a lifesaver,” said Jacob. “These devices can also provide some peace of mind in a region where wildfire is a year-round threat.”County Fire received a federal grant to help purchase 200 boxes. The county plans to loan the boxes to residents in rural communities.So far, the county says it has received 70 applications. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and City Attorney Mara Elliott on Monday announced a new partnership that will help protect local families from gun violence.The local leaders said a program will be implemented to provide specialized gun safety training for 800 county social workers that deal with children and investigate child abuse.The training will be held virtually for these employees in the coming months. They want each of them to be familiar with gun violence restraining orders and San Diego’s Safe Storage of Firearms law -- two tools gun prevention advocates say are essential in keeping people safe.Carol Landale, with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention, said, “The more people who are aware of how to use a gun violence restraining order, as far as we’re concerned, the better. And this is not to say we’re coming after your guns. This is not what it’s about … We remove the gun on a temporary basis -- a temporary removal for a crisis and when the crisis is done the gun can be returned.”Officials say they’re doing this now because COVID-19 has limited the interaction between children and mandated reporters like their teachers or school counselors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ride-sharing service Uber is expanding its dockless transportation offerings in San Diego Wednesday, introducing e-scooters to the city's streets.Uber's JUMP e-scooters will work similarly to the company's JUMP bicycles, allowing users to either reserve a scooter or walk up to one and unlock it via the Uber app.The scooters also bear a similar resemblance to competing Lime scooters, though instead sporting a red and black color scheme.To kick start the service, Uber is offering free rides and helmets through Jan. 9, 2019. Riders can get up to five, 30-minute rides per day.
