SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Red Cross Volunteers are stepping up to help the many communities at risk of Hurricane Dorian's wrath.So far 20 volunteers have been assigned to the disaster, 18 will be on the ground, and two are working remotely.John Stone is deploying Tuesday evening to South Carolina, he's responded to over 20 disasters."You catch the bug, I mean you're helping people recover from a natural disaster, every disaster is different," said Stone. Stone says this deployment is more personal; his daughter lives in Charleston."I emphasize with her to have a plan, be ready to go, it's my grandchildren you're dealing with, I want you to be safe," said Stone.At any moment, the local Red Cross could be asked to send more volunteers. On Monday night, more than 12,200 people stayed in 171 Red Cross and community evacuation shelters in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. This included nearly 11,700 people in 142 shelters in Florida; some 280 people in 10 Red Cross shelters in Georgia; and 290 people in 19 Red Cross shelters in South Carolina.More than 1,900 trained Red Cross responders from all over the country are helping to support relief efforts. 1177

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diego salon owners say the regulations released by the state may not be enough to help save their businesses.Like other business owners around San Diego and across California, salon owner Season McKesson has been trying to navigate through the many changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.Through the pandemic, she and other business owners have had to deal with closures, implementing safety precautions, and obtaining personal protective equipment.RELATED: New guidance issued for hair/nail salons, barbershops to move outdoorsOn Monday, the state announced updated guidelines for hair salons and barbershops to operate outdoors.McKesson was prepared to reopen her salon to operate outside until she read the regulations thoroughly. According to the state’s guidelines, salons can reopen but they cannot offer any chemical-related treatments and cannot shampoo customers.“At first, I was trying to be optimistic; you know, giving our industry a way out to come back … but after they dropped the bomb that it’s only haircuts. Reality sets in, and there’s absolutely no way people are going to make ends meet,” she said.McKesson told ABC 10News the guidelines cuts what she believes are essential to the salon experience.She added, “You go to a salon for a certain experience and you’re going to sit and get sprayed down in 100-degree weather. There’s no way.”McKesson is also concerned about the space to operate outdoors, saying not many salons have patios and would have to move into parking spaces. She is similarly worried about the cleanliness of working outside.“It’s not sanitary. It’s not a controlled environment; sitting behind a chair is a controlled environment. I know it’s being cleaned and I know what’s being touched,” McKesson said.Several other salon owners around San Diego County told ABC 10News they are leaning towards not reopening because of the rules, which puts them in an already tough financial situation as they try to keep their businesses alive. 2021

That was certainly the case in San Diego County on Halloween night, when surveillance video captured trick-or-treaters behaving badly.“Frustrating and really disappointing,” said Eastlake resident K.C. Helman.Helman returned home from trick-or-treating with his kids Thursday night to find his candy bowl gone.Video showed two costumed kids walking up to the bowl. One of them grabbed it and they both ran away.It wasn’t the only trick on Halloween night. 10News gathered a collection of videos posted by residents victimized by some frightful behavior.The candy thieves are a far cry from the generous South Bay boy who was caught on camera in 2017 pouring his own candy into an empty bowl so other children wouldn't be disappointed.Lawrence Malot, then 15, explained what motivated him to share his candy.He's not the only good example in San Diego.
