The "City by the Bay" is known for more than a few things. Treacherous hills, cable cars, golden bridges and…Sourdough bread, which is San Francisco’s not so well-kept secret for at least the last 150 years, if not longer. Just ask Jen Latham.“The Basque country, which is that region kind of in between France and Spain, has an amazing tradition of this exact style of bread, like that very crusty, very wet, very open crumb bread. And during the gold rush and just after the gold rush, there was this huge influx of Basque people to the to this area. They brought that tradition of bread here,” said Latham.Latham is the head of Bread at Tartine Bakery in San Francisco.Ever since San Francisco boomed in the mid 1800’s with the gold rush, the city has been a haven for the sour bakers. The tradition is alive and well at Tartine.What makes sourdough different than other bread? It’s this little thing called a starter.“It’s a paste of flour and water that’s inoculated with the right balance of yeast and bacteria to raise dough,” said Latham.Yup just mix a little flour and water and let it collect the natural bacteria in the air and you too can have your very own sourdough starter. And since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic people have.People at home have been making, feeding, and nurturing their own starter at home.“Hopped on the bandwagon during COVID, just like millions of people probably did. Kind of found some blogs and started from there but it’s been going since like April,” said TC Jamison, a home baker.Jamison started his starter six month ago when the lockdowns were in full swing. He’s been baking and feeding it ever since.“You’re dealing with something that’s alive, so it’s going to be different every time,” said Jamison.Yup, feeding it fresh flour and water every day, for six months. It’s a lot of work.“The starter has been going, the one that we use now for well over 20 years,” Latham explained.So Jamison has a little ways to go. Some bakeries in San Francisco have had an ongoing starter for more than 150 years.But Jamison has a pretty special goal for his starter."My daughter was born in June. I was pretty hell bent on keeping the starter going before she was born and then afterwards. So now I can always say, that’s been around since before you were born,” he said. That will go down in the dad joke hall of fame.At Tartine, they’ll continue to shape, fold, and flour their way into the fabric of San Francisco sourdough history.“You’re never done learning about bread. There’s always more to learn. There’s always things you can change, there’s infinite variables. The flour and the weather and you’re fermentation management, timing, temperature. Subpoenas have been served on the Trump Organization and a dozen linked entities in a lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump's ongoing business ties while in office.The office of District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine said Wednesday that it "can confirm that all of the Trump Organization entities have been served." Additionally, subpoenas are being served to the state of Maine, the attorney general's office said.The lawsuit by DC and Maryland claims Trump is in violation of the Constitution's ban on emoluments, or payments, from foreign or domestic government entities to the President because of his continued interest in the Trump International Hotel.DC and Maryland have said the Trump International Hotel's operations put other nearby hotels and entertainment properties at a competitive disadvantage, and that the Trump hotel got special tax concessions. The hotel won its lease on federally owned property before Trump's election.A federal judge set in motion the schedule for DC and Maryland attorneys general to begin collecting evidence in the case. The plaintiffs say they also plan to subpoena 18 entities that compete with the Trump Hotel.The Justice Department has signaled it may challenge the evidence-gathering process.The case is proceeding just as the Trump Organization prepares for a flurry of investigations from House Democrats once they take control of Congress in January.The Trump Organization has not responded to requests for comment on the case. 1532

Students and staffs of schools across the United States walked out of buildings and protested at statehouses in support of victims of gun violence, and seeking legislation aimed at making public spaces safer.The National School Walkout was organized by the Women's March youth branch, called EMPOWER. Walkouts occurred at schools at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 14 in every time zone.Walkouts took place one month after a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that claimed 17 lives. TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Two Jewish comedians riffing in a podcast about the idiosyncrasies of their shared heritage have sparked an uproar. It started as a lighthearted conversation between Marc Maron and Seth Rogen but talk soon turned to Israel. In his interview on the popular “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast on July 27, 2020, Rogen said amassing Jews in one country to keep them safe “doesn’t make sense.” Their comments about Israel infuriated many Israel supporters and were interpreted as denying Israel’s right to exist. They highlight the country’s tenuous relationship with young, progressive Jewish critics in the diaspora. Rogen says his comments were made in jest and have been misconstrued. TAMPA, Fla. -- A commercial about child hunger inspired Kennedy McCormick to take action when she just 7 years old.“I felt really bad for the children, so I wanted to do something to help,” said McCormick, now 14.For her birthday that year, she wanted to collect food instead of getting presents.“So we had a party and that’s exactly what happened. Everybody brought food,” said her father, Kelvin.Kennedy has carried on that tradition every year, teaming up with Feeding Tampa Bay to make sure the donations get to those in need.“The more I’ve done it. The more donations I’ve gotten over the years,” said Kennedy.This year with the pandemic, she held a virtual fundraiser, raising about ,000.All her hard work got noticed by General Mills and they surprised her with a donation like she’s never seen before: two truckloads of Cheerios. That’s 48,000 boxes.“I was extra surprised when I saw the truck drive by because I thought it was only going to be the cereal over there and then there was a truck.
