Regardless of where they're taking place, teachers are still spending money on supplies.According to a survey by AdoptAClassroom.org, many teachers have spent about a third of their school supply expenses on distance learning materials.“They're actually spending more,” said Ann Pifer, Executive Director at AdoptAClassroom. “70% of the teachers we surveyed said that they have delivered supplies to students' homes, either by bringing them personally or by mailing assignments with supplies.”Nearly every three out of four teachers have spent money on printers, ink and paper to make work packets for students who may not have access to computers and internet.Nearly half have spent money on postage and mailing supplies, so they can send learning materials to students.Even in schools where classes are being held in person, AdoptAClassroom still expects teachers to spend more money on supplies.“In a normal elementary classroom, there's a basket of pens and papers and crayons and scissors on a table,” said Pifer. “And groups of students share those supplies to do projects. A Detroit 2-year-old born with Spina Bifida has defied the odds and taken her first steps without a walker.A video, which has been shared thousands of times on Facebook, Skylar Turner taking her first steps into her father's arms without her walker.Shawn and Unissa Turner say Skylar is beating the odds and proving to everyone that she will walk."It was amazing," Shawn Turner said. "It was unreal because this is the moment you always wish for."At just two years old, Skylar has already endured more than most girls her age."When you’re told that your child has a birth defect before they come out, it changes your whole outlook on life," Shawn Turner said. Spina Bifida is a birth defect where the spinal cord doesn’t fully develop, making it difficult for those affected to walk.At first, Unissa Turner took Skyler's diagnosis really hard, and says she still tends to blame herself."I do still feel that it’s my fault, but I know it’s not," she said. "But, I definitely took it really hard."A determined toddler, Skylar wasn’t going to let her condition stop her from taking her first steps, or even dancing. She loves Taylor Swift and dances when one of her songs is on.The special moment of Skylar trying to walk to her father, not once, not twice – but three times, until eventually making it into his arms was all caught on camera. A California police officer was charged Wednesday in connection with a fatal shooting at an Oakland-area Walmart store in April.San Leandro Police Officer Jason Fletcher was charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with an incident where he fatally shot 33-year-old Steven Taylor on April 18.According to the Alameda County District Attorney's office, a security guard at the store called police when Taylor tried to leave San Leandro Walmart with a baseball bat and a tent without paying.Fletcher responded to the call and approached Taylor as he entered the store. The officer tried to grab the baseball bat from Taylor, and when he couldn't get control of the bat he drew his stun gun.After firing the stun gun, Taylor stumbled forward with the bat sitll in his hand. According to body camera footage, Fletcher repeatedly asked Taylor to drop the bat. Fletcher then fired his gun once, a shot that proved to be fatal.In its charging statement, the District Attorney's office, claimed that Taylor "posed no threat of imminent deadly force or serious bodily injury" to the officers or anyone else in the store because he had "clearly experienced the shock of the taser as he was leaning forward over his feet and stumbling forward."Fletcher's lawyer, Michael Rains, told the San Francisco Chronicle that he was "very disappointed" that the officer had been charged and that the charges were "undeserved."The decision to file the criminal complaint was made after an intensive investigation and thorough analysis of the evidence and the current law," Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley said.Lee Merritt, an attorney for Taylor's family, told NBC News that Taylor was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the shooting.Fletcher will be arraigned on Sept. 15 at a county courthouse in Dublin, California. 1845
