SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University officials say two students have tested positive for coronavirus, but that the cases are not connected and the risk to the campus is low.A statement on behalf of the campus said the school confirmed Wednesday the two students had tested positive and that both students live off-campus. The students were tested by the college's Student Health Services. The two cases are not believed to be connected to any reported off-campus gatherings, the school statement said. RELATED: San Diego State fraternities ban social events this fall due to COVID-19"The two students did not interact with campus, or with any SDSU employees outside of the SHS COVID-19 Test Collection Booth, and were not in any other spaces utilized by the campus community. The SHS COVID-19 Test Collection Booth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected as part of patient care and enhanced COVID-19 disinfection protocols," the school statement read.Since March 2020, the school says it has had 27 confirmed COVID-19 cases within the broader campus community among faculty, staff, students, and visitors to campus, including the SDSU Imperial Valley campus. The school said the risk to others on campus is low and SHS is in the process of performing contact tracing.RELATED: SDSU begins 2020-21 school year with mostly virtual classes"SHS is in the process of speaking with the individuals known to have been in direct contact with the two separate students. All are following established public health protocols for isolation and quarantine, and exposure risk to others on campus is deemed low. Due to privacy restrictions, we cannot share the name or additional details about the individuals," SDSU's statement said.Just this week, the school began its 2020-21 school year with almost all of its cases being held virtually. Still, there are about 2,600 students living on campus this semester and others who may have to physically go to campus for certain matters. 1981

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University's men's basketball team has returned to the top ten in the national polls for the first time in five years, reaching number seven in the AP and Coach's Polls released Monday. The Aztecs are 15-0 to start the season, making them one of just two undefeated teams remaining in Division One. The other team is Auburn. Head Coach Brian Dutcher says the team is handling the success well, refusing to be distracted. He told 10News that the growing buzz about his team is reminiscent of the program's glory years at the beginning of the decade, when rising star Kawhi Leonard led the team to conference championships and a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.RELATED: San Diego State's stadium effort gets -million donation"It makes a difference," Dutcher said. "It makes a difference in winning and losing. We're excited when this building is full. Hopefully it will be that way for the rest of the year.""Our student section is growing more and more," junior forward Matt Mitchell told 10News. "They're starting to be more and more active. It only helps the city and helps the program and helps the university."The team's next home game, Saturday versus Boise State, sold out Monday afternoon. A spokesperson says they anticipate that sellouts are likely for the team's other six remaining home games as long as the winning streak continues. 1389

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some families scrambling to deal with the challenges of distance learning will be getting some help from an unlikely source. For La Jolla High junior Katie Frost, 16, the upcoming school year will be a busy one. She's on the school's track team and JV basketball squad. Along with the usual coarse load, she will be taking college entrance exams. Frost has just added something else to her plate."During these times, people should think of ways to push themselves outside their comfort zone to help," said Frost.Keenly aware of how families are juggling the challenges served up with distance learning, Frost decided to offer free zoom tutoring sessions in math and English for local elementary and middle school students."I know how difficult school can be. I struggled in elementary school ... With the added stresses of distance learning, I'm just want to do my part to help these families and to help the kids excel," said Frost.Frost posted her services on the Nextdoor app, even put out an application. She already has four kids signed up and that number is expected to grow. Depending on the response, she could recruit her friends to create a tutoring club to help more families. Frost says she hopes other teens will also step up and volunteer their time tutoring as well."Instead of thinking of these times as a pause, you can think of it as a time you can change your life and the lives of others. These kids deserve a chance to do well," said Frost. 1487

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is suspending spring 2020 programs to Italy amid the spread of the novel coronavirus. The university said in an update to students Monday that it was calling all students studying abroad in Italy back to the United States. The decision was made due to the elevated level three travel advisories the CDC and State Department issued for the country. RELATED: UC San Diego, SDSU cancel South Korea study abroad programs due to coronavirus“With the exception of study abroad programs in China, South Korea and Italy, SDSU remains open and classes will continue as usual,” the university said. At the moment, the university doesn’t have any plans to cancel classes. University officials say they won’t make such plans unless directed by the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. In late February, both San Diego State University and UC San Diego canceled study abroad programs in South Korea amid the spread of coronavirus. 987
