A student gunman opened fire at a southern California high school Thursday morning, leaving two dead and several others injured, officials said.According to authorities, the male suspect, who is a student at the school, opened fire in the quad at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita around 7:38 a.m. before classes started. Authorities were on scene by 7:40 a.m. after receiving several 911 calls about the shooting. The suspected gunman shot and killed two students, a 16-year-old female a 14-year-old male, and injured three others before shooting himself in the head, police said. He is currently in custody and being treated at a local hospital, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. Officials say he is in grave condition.Video obtained at the scene showed the suspect taking a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol from a backpack before shooting the five other students and then himself, said Capt. Kent Wegener of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.The other victims include two females, ages 14 and 15, and a 14-year-old male, police said. They were transported to local hospitals with gunshot wounds.Police are investigating the alleged shooter's home, which is near the school, authorities said at a press conference. A New Mexico man has been charged with a felony after police say his cat tested positive for methamphetamines.Aaron Spaulding, 39, was initially arrested on June 4 and accused of battering his girlfriend and holding her against her will, the Las Cruces Police Department said in a statement.While police were responding to the incident at Spaulding's home, they learned he may have been neglecting his dog and a domestic shorthair cat, police said.Authorities said he strangled and force-fed drugs to the cat, and announced Tuesday that they'd upgraded his animal cruelty counts to a felony after tests found the cat had methamphetamines in its system.Information on his attorney was not immediately available.He was originally charged with false imprisonment, two counts of battery against a household member, interference with communication and two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty, according to court records.Authorities said a veterinarian reported signs of neurological deficits in the cat, who was treated and adopted into another home. 1058

Americans traveling abroad are racing to try and get home, up against canceled or fully booked flights."This was our first international trip together, and we were going to spend St. Patrick's Day in Dublin," said Bree Steffen, who lives in San Diego.But for Bree Steffen and Sean Harris, the dream began to unravel while waiting for their connecting flight. "We were in Zürich when we found out about the travel restriction and when the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. So, we were like, 'Oh my God. What do we do?'" said Steffen. The couple tried to book tickets home, but they would've cost upwards of ,000, so Steffen and Harris stuck to the original plan. "We still had a really good time, but it was a lot different than we had pictured," said Steffen. They felt especially safe in the countryside, outnumbered by four-legged friends. But the mood changed in Dublin, where nearly all museums, restaurants, and pubs were closed. "It was tough, it was tough going into a restaurant and knowing that the busiest day for the year for them is now the slowest day of the year," said Harris. "We were supposed to come back on Friday, but everything kept changing hourly, and we were so scared we'd get stuck there, and we can't get stuck there, we had to get back," said Steffen. For days the couple couldn't find a flight; they were either booked or canceled. A woman from New Zealand and a man from Australia took their love of aviation (and each other) to new heights by tying the knot 37,000 feet in the air.Australian David Valliant and New Zealander Cathy Valliant officially said "I do" on a commercial Jetstar Flight 201 from Sydney to Auckland.As the plane flew between their two countries, the couple pledged their love and commitment to each other in a special ceremony at the front of the aircraft's cabin. They tied the knot as they hit the halfway point between their home countries.A Jetstar ground crew member acted as officiant as the plane's passengers and crew looked on."It was the most amazing experience and something we will remember for the rest of our lives," said Cathy Valliant in a statement.The couple met online in 2011 while playing the computer game "Airport City" and met in person for the first time two years later at Sydney airport."Our love of aviation is what brought us together," Cathy said.The legal wedding ceremony took place at Sydney Airport ahead of takeoff, but it was the ceremony in the sky that was truly memorable.A few years later, her soon-to-be husband had planned to propose onboard a flight from Brisbane to Melbourne but nerves got the better of him, Cathy said. "He eventually proposed that evening," she added.Cathy said she wanted to do "something really memorable" for their wedding and so posted on Jetstar's Facebook page about her idea to get hitched in the air."We wanted it to symbolize our love for aviation, our love for Australia and New Zealand and our love for each other. A shark reportedly bit a surfer Saturday afternoon off Southern California in a “truly terrifying situation,” the Coast Guard said.The 37-year-old man had been surfing near Santa Rosa Island, one of the Channel Islands, during the attack, according to a news release.A friend aboard a nearby boat applied a tourniquet to his leg and called the Coast Guard for help, the release stated.
