An artificial intelligence tool can help doctors when deciding which COVID-19 patients can be sent home, according to a study that started in May.Researchers at New York University used the AI tool to analyze thousands of COVID-19 cases. The team used data from Asia and Europe to develop the model. It uses lab results, vital signs and oxygen requirements to determine how the patient will do over the next few days. The study has found the AI tool can identify patients that will do well with 90% precision, which could help doctors prioritize care and make discharging plans for others.Doctors always make the final call, but the AI tool can help reaffirm their decisions.“It's augmenting, but it's also teaching a little bit, because you know when the physicians see a patient that looks well, but the models say they may not be well, they can look at the, the features right? The vital signs and labs and other things that are saying that this patient isn't well and then they can start to understand or create a mental model,” said Yin Aphinyanaphongs, Director of Translational Clinical Informatics for DataCore, NYU.The researchers are still running randomized trials for about another two months, looking at the average time patients spend in the hospital. The hope is the AI tool could help reduce the length of stay.“That's extremely compelling because now you don't just show oh I have a model that can predict a favorable outcome, but now you have a model, right, that actually affects the outcome,” said Aphinyanaphongs.Another team at NYU is now conducting a survey among doctors that have used the tool. One facility has already implemented it.The researchers wanted to make sure it's easy for other organizations to start -- so the software can be up and running in about half a day. 1805

Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz has admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a female reporter, three days after she made online allegations against the married Berkowitz. In a statement, Berkowitz apologized to the people of Anchorage for a “major lapse” in judgment in having what he said was a consensual, inappropriate messaging relationship with TV anchorwoman Maria Athens. The acknowledgment comes at the end of three days that roiled Alaska’s largest city, a span that saw both his denial of accusations Athens made on Facebook and her arrest. It was not immediately clear what the messages involved and how long it lasted. Berkowitz declined an interview with The Associated Press. 710

An international flight from Dubai to Amsterdam had to make an emergency landing last week on a Transavia Airlines flight after a fight broke out due to a passenger's flatulence, according to the Dutch De Telegraph.According to the report, two sisters complained about a man passing gas on board of the flight. When the Transavia Airlines crew failed to do anything about the flatulence, that is when the passengers allegedly got physical. Nora Lachhab, 25, and her sister, were forced off the plane by police in Vienna for allegedly getting physical with other passengers. Lachhab told De Telegraph that the allegations are untrue. "The strange thing is that we also had to leave the aircraft. While we did not know these guys at all. We happened to be in the same row, but did not do anything to justify the bizarre behavior of the Transavia crew,"Lachhab told De Telegraaf.According to De Telegraaf, four passengers, including those accused of passing gas, were barred from flying on Transavia Airlines. "That is unacceptable. Our crew must ensure a safe flight," an airline spokesperson told De Telegraaf. "When passengers pose risks, they immediately intervene. Our people are trained for that. They know very well where the boundaries are. Transavia is therefore square behind the cabin crew and the pilots."An unidentified passenger told De Telegraaf that Transavia Airlines' response was an over reaction. 1541

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. (AP) — Cal Fire alleges that fast food chain In-N-Out was responsible for a 2017 wildfire in rural Arroyo Grande, according to a lawsuit filed in San Luis Obispo Superior Court. The San Luis Obispo Tribune reports that Cal Fire claims the September 2017 wildfire was caused by a tractor mowing grass on In-N-Out property, saying it was covered in “dry annual grasses and scattered brush, which created a receptive bed of flammable vegetation.” The agency also claims the tractor was improperly maintained and the driver allowed the fire to spread.Cal Fire is seeking roughly .2 million from the burger chain to recoup costs. The fire burned about 245 acres (99 hectares) in four days. In-N-Out did not respond to a request from The Tribune.___Information from: The Tribune, http://www.sanluisobispo.com 832
