SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- After a rise in COVID- 19 cases, the governor closed many indoor activities, including places of worship. Churches around the county were forced to make changes to their services, but some embrace the new scenery.Sunday morning mass was held outdoors for parishioners at Saint Agnes Catholic Church. Members brought their beach chairs to worship in the church’s parking lot.“I love being able to see people here, gathered together, and worship together,” says Father Bill Marquis.The changes came after the governor’s announcement to stop indoor activities due to the rise in COVID-19 cases across the state. San Diego county is one a few dozen on the state’s watchlist.Saint Agnes Catholic Church says it is still offering virtual services, but it was the members who requested to have the “beach chair mass” on Sunday morning.“Parishioners asked me if we were going to have mass on Sunday, I said we were going to live stream it,” says Father Marquis. “She says we would still like to have an outdoor mass on Sunday, if possible. I said why, and she said because we want to receive communion. That was the deciding factor for me.”As many churches around the county make changes to their services, some places of worship are working with city leaders to hold outdoor services. Poway officials approved a plan to share park space with places of worship and fitness centers. The City of El Cajon is looking into a similar idea. 1452

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether its the search for something warm or just a turn to the comforts of home, this past winter gave San Diegans more pause for certain cuisines.Food ordering platform Grubhub looked at food delivery trends from Dec. 22, 2018, to March 13, 2019, to analyze San Diego's winter food trends by users compared to the rest of the year.Leading the pack were bean burritos saw a 362 percent increase in popularity during that time span, more than 100 percent more than the next most popular dish, according to Grubhub.RELATED: Inventive eggs Benedict, dumpling soup highlight San Diego's foodie scene on Yelp listGyro wraps experienced a 258 percent increase in orders, while vegetable ramen orders shot up 222 percent. Chicken wraps (165 percent increase) and chow mein (157 percent increase) rounded out the top five menu items.The "science" could correspond with winter's below average temperatures — and perhaps the heavy rains. Many of the most popular items ordered were soups.Heading into spring, the app went further and looked at orders over the spring 2017 and 2018 to predict what San Diegans would likely order. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two families will forever be connected after an organ donation saves the life of a woman struggling with heart disease for nearly a decade. Susan Amador's son, David Rivera died, at the age of 30, in 2017 of a brain bleed, caused by a rare clotting disorder. The 30-year-old left behind a 4-year-old and his fiancee. Rivera was a registered organ donor and his organs helped save the lives of five people. His heart was donated to a woman named Sandra, of Chula Vista. On Monday, Rivera's family met the woman who now carries their loved ones' heart. The meeting was made possible through Lifesharing Donate Life, an organization that coordinates organ and tissue donation in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Rivera's mom hopes her story will encourage more people to sign up to be organ donors. 824
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sweat equity can pay off for San Diego's first-time homebuyers taking over the properties of downsizing Baby Boomers.The region's once red-hot housing market will continue to cool in 2019, according to a study by the California Association of Realtors released earlier this month. High home prices and rising interest rates are expected to slow sales.In our effort to help you find ways to make it in San Diego, 10News discovered a generation of people motivated to sell, and a generation willing to do the work to get a better deal."So, if you think about going into the grocery store and there's a bin of apples, you want to pick the one that's the shiniest right?” says Lisa Becker, a realtor for Keller-Williams. “Our job is to help the sellers spend money strategically and wisely, and yet we have a saying, ‘Don’t step over a dollar bill to pick up a penny.'"Becker encourages sellers not to spend money where it isn't necessary to sell their homes, including her current clients.“They’ve been here for 40 years, they’re in their late 70s,” says Becker. Baby Boomers are the fastest growing generation of sellers. According to Pew Research, 10,000 Baby Boomers retire every day, many with adult children long gone. Now these Boomers are looking to downsize into something more manageable on a fixed income.“They just took ,000 and resurfaced the pool, because the pool needed it,” says Becker showing off the backyard pool. “So, they’re taking care of the property, but this is a reason they want out.”An acre lot is harder to manage for someone in their 70s but might be perfect for a young family looking for their first home. With Boomers, many of the homes are well taken care of and maintained, but the interiors are not always up to modern designs.“So that’s where we come in as the realtor to have them do it in the simplest way possible,” says Becker. “So, when we take down the wallpaper and bring in more contemporary accessories, this kitchen will be absolutely fine. They’ve taken really great care of it, yet it’s still tile counters, and we know the buyer is going to want to put in quartz or granite in here.”No need for a costly upgrade in the kitchen or any other rooms. Instead, Becker and her team will take out all the furniture and stage the entire house.“So, as we go through the home, we’re going to be neutralizing all the paint,” says Becker. That gives the younger buyer a vision of the home’s potential.Repairs that need to be made will be made.“We’re going to come in and get this repaired because it just begs too many questions,” says Becker, pointing out rotting wood on the back patio cover.The goal is to grab the buyer’s attention and allow them to put in some sweat equity after moving in, creating their vision for larger projects like kitchens and master bedrooms.“Buyers' logic makes them think, and emotion makes them act.
