SANTA FE, N.M. – George R.R. Martin, the author of the books that inspired the TV show “Game of Thrones,” says he’s practicing social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic. Martin provided the update to his fans in a blog post Tuesday, saying that he’s spending the time at his Santa Fe home writing the next book in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series. “Truth be told, I am spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day,” he wrote. “Things are pretty grim in the Seven Kingdoms… but maybe not as grim as they may become here.” As a 71-year-old man, Martin is in high risk age group for COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus. However, he says he’s taking the necessary precautions. “For those of you who may be concerned for me personally… yes, I am aware that I am very much in the most vulnerable population, given my age and physical condition,” he wrote. “But I feel fine at the moment, and we are taking all sensible precautions. Right now, doctors at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are trying to figure out whether people who vape are at a higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.Currently, vapers and smokers are not in the high-risk category. Doctors say coronavirus is a respiratory disease, which affects the lungs. People who vape or smoke already have weaker lungs. Last year, we saw many teens go to the hospital with lung illnesses associated with vaping.Dr. David Beuther, Chief Medical Information Officer at National Jewish Health says while vapers and smokers are at a greater risk, the risk of developing more severe complications is even greater. “I’d be more worried about you more than normal, but I think anybody that vapes, that inhales anything toxic into their lungs, is putting their lungs at risk, because it probably alters the immune system,” said Dr. Beuther. “It probably causes some irritation. It probably reduces your own lung’s ability to defend itself against this virus.Vaping may also contribute to more infections when people are using the device and exhaling.Dr. Beuther says while we try to stay six feet away from people, someone vaping may blow their cloud further than that and that could increase the risk of spreading the virus.Dr. Beuther encourages people to take this virus seriously and to consider quitting smoking. 1371

Residents were urged to shelter in place for several hours after an explosion and fire broke out Wednesday at a massive ExxonMobil plant in Texas, injuring 66 people, officials said.The injuries were non-life threatening, plant manager Jason Duncan told reporters. Most involved minor, first-degree-type burns, with the victims treated at a local clinic, he said. Most were ExxonMobil employees or contractors.City officials said via Twitter Wednesday afternoon that the shelter-in-place advisory had been lifted after monitoring failed to detect "any levels of concern" in the air. The fire had been contained by the evening."We realize the people who live here in Baytown and our surrounding communities are worried," Baytown spokeswoman Natasha Barrett told reporters. "We understand that and we've been working hour after hour to check on things, to monitor air quality."The fire occurred at the company's Baytown Olefins Plant, ExxonMobil spokeswoman Sarah Nordin said. The company website describes the complex as one of the largest refining and petrochemical complexes in the world. He said crews were working to shut down the units to isolate the fire source.Duncan said the company is conducting air quality monitoring at the site and fence line, and cooperating with regulatory agencies.
