SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — North Park residents will celebrate this holiday season with an annual tradition intact — at least for one more year.For 56 years, the Toyland Parade has delighted crowds in North Park during the holiday season. But much like a parade balloon, financial troubles have loomed over organizers.Last year, the parade was briefly canceled after former-host Victoria House Corporation said it had lost support from sponsors. Angela Landsberg, executive director with North Park Main Street, says support from the local Lions Club has saved 2019's parade, but 2020 is a different story."Our presenting sponsor North Park Lions Club have ensured that it's going to go off this year, but if we don't raise enough money this year to get us carried through our planning for next year, because these things take a long time to plan, then this will be the final year," Landsberg told 10News. The organization is asking for the community to once again step in to make sure the parade steps off on University Avenue next year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People who live near Mini Square Park in City Heights are fed up with what they say is a rise in crime and noise. They're calling for a curfew to be imposed at the park from 9 pm - 5 am."Every rule that's posted here is broken all day long and mostly all night long," says one woman who asked 10News not to identify her because she feels unsafe in her home next to the park. "I can get practically high from the marijuana that comes into my window cause it overlooks the park. The noise becomes just unbearable at times."The park opened in 2014, on 43rd Street in between Polk and University Avenue. Sitting between a senior center, an apartment complex and a health clinic, It was designed as a way to give adults in the community a gathering place.Instead, neighbors say it's been overrun with crime and drugs.A search of the website crimemapping.com shows 148 crimes reported within 1000 feet of the park over the last six months. That includes 21 stolen cars, 19 assaults and 16 robberies.It's gotten to the point where some people say they're afraid to walk by it, especially at night."Of course I would like to be in this park, to spend my free time there," says Isaac Musaazi, who lives in the apartment complex next door. "But I can't because of the people who are there."A community meeting to discuss a curfew and how to enforce it is scheduled for Thursday with the Community Parks Committee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have identified the man suspected of stabbing a 55-year-old to death in the Midway District Thanksgiving Day. According to San Diego Police, Forrest Robert Brantley, 38, stabbed 55-year-old Robert Frank Erbe around 8 a.m. November 28 on the 3100 block of Sports Arena Boulevard. Erbe was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries.RELATED: Police identify man killed in Midway District stabbingAfter investigating the stabbing, police learned that Brantley and Erbe got into some sort of fight before Brantley is accused of stabbing Erbe in the neck. Brantley was last seen walking away from the scene. He is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached, police say. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One of San Diego's most famous malls is poised for a multi-million dollar renovation. On Wednesday, Fashion Valley will announce a project to add what it describes as inviting public spaces, enriched landscaping, broader dining and gathering places, tranquil outdoor lounges and water features, and increased personal shopping and valet services. It's the mall's biggest project since it added a second story in the mid-1990s. Vicki Hanor, a senior vice president with Simon Malls, said in a statement Fashion Valley is home to more than 50 retailers exclusive to San Diego, and prides itself on providing the ultimate shopping and dining experience. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nurses and healthcare workers gathered Friday morning demanding Palomar Health provide more nurses and PPE to support their staff as they see a surge in patients.Nurses said they are stretched thin and maxed out caring for our community during the pandemic."Palomar claims they took a hit due to the pandemic, but it's the nurses and caregivers who are taking the hit in the from of increased patient loads, unsafe staffing levels and inadequate PPE," ICU nurse Joanne Meza said.She and a group of healthcare workers held red signs reading "Save Lives, Safe Staffing Now."Palomar Health sent ABC 10News a statement stating they received a waiver from the California Department of Public Health Wednesday that would allow Palomar to "assign one ICU nurse to care for up to three patients, depending on patient acuity. The waiver, which only applies to one 12 bed unit which has both intensive and intermediate care patients located in the same area, has not been implemented and is only in preparation for a potential patient surge or reduction in workforce due to sickness."The law states safe ratios are one ICU nurse to two patients.Meza accused the hospital of furloughing employees while they knew the impact the pandemic would have.She also accused the hospital of commingling COVID and non-COVID patients. Palomar said that is "completely false. As a healthcare system, it is irresponsible to instill fear in our community.
