BALTIMORE - A woman and man are dead and at least seven other people are seriously hurt after a gas explosion caused three homes to collapse Monday morning in Northwest Baltimore. As rescue crews and K-9's continued combing through the rubble overnight, a man's body was discovered just before 1 a.m. Tuesday. He is the second reported death related to the incident.A family member on Tuesday afternoon confirmed to WMAR-2 News, that the man found was 20-year-old Morgan State student Joseph Graham.Authorities haven't officially released the names of any of the victims. The explosion happened just before 10 a.m. near the Plaza in the area of Labyrinth and Reisterstown Roads, prompting a three-alarm response from 200 rescue crews from multiple cities and surrounding county agencies.About 200 people were impacted, including 30 who needed temporary housing. The American Red Cross is helping them with food, shelter, transportation, and medical services, while the city works to make sure the homes still standing are structurally sound.PHOTO GALLERY: DEADLY EXPLOSION TURNS NW BALTIMORE HOMES INTO RUBBLEBGE was able to turn gas off in the area by 9 p.m. Monday.Meanwhile, some electric lines were damaged causing power outages, but they've since been repaired with all power having been restored in the neighborhood.Investigators are looking into whether any customer-owned home utility appliances potentially contributed to the explosion. So far BGE says they've been unable to find any leaks or problems with gas mains and meters in the area.Prior to the explosion, BGE said they received no reports of gas odors or leaks at any of the homes in the last five years. The area’s gas infrastructure was installed in the early 1960s and was last inspected in July of 2019.Maryland's Vital Records building was forced to close for the rest of the day, following the explosion.WMAR-2 News spoke with two witnesses who explained what they heard and saw, and how they rushed to help. Governor Larry Hogan tweeted that he's been debriefed on the situation and said his office is grateful to the first responders at the scene. We are closely monitoring the situation in northwest Baltimore following this morning’s horrific explosion. We have reached out to offer our full support to the ongoing response and recovery efforts, and are deeply grateful to the first responders on the scene.— Governor Larry Hogan (@GovLarryHogan) August 10, 2020City Council President Brandon Scott said he first learned of the explosion from his mother, who works at a grocery store in the Reisterstown Plaza."This morning’s explosion was absolutely devastating. The tragedy hit close to home as I received a call from my mother who works nearby in the Reisterstown Plaza. She heard the blast from her job," said Scott. "I want to thank not only our Baltimore City first responders but also Baltimore County for their support during this tragedy. My heart and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the residents of this community. During this time of uncertainty, the only thing that matters is the safety and wellbeing of our neighbors."For now, people are being told to steer clear of the area.WMAR-2 News has a crew on the ground and will continue to provide the latest updates as they become available. This story was originally published by Ryan Dickstein at WMAR. 3363

As states begin to reopen, a new stage in the pandemic means elective surgeries are back on schedule. For 51-year-old mother of two Honaire Murillo, the pandemic delayed a much needed spinal surgery.“The shooting pains all the time and you know I had kids I have to run around. And so, it took about a year and I was so disappointed,” says Murillo.Twenty-four years ago, the aspiring pro-bodybuilder’s dreams were cut short when she was hit by a motorboat while visiting Puerto Rico on business.More than 20 surgeries later, Murillo needed another one.“The pain started coming back and so I knew I was going to have more surgery,” she says.Last week, doctors at Rush University Medical Center’s Midwest Orthopaedics in Chicago were able to get Murillo into surgery for a first-of-its-kind procedure. It was a minimally invasive spine surgery that utilized augmented reality.“The efficiency this provides because of the accuracy and the visualization of the spine is remarkable,” says Dr. Frank Phillips, the director and minimally invasive spinal surgeon at Rush who performed the procedure.A headset guidance system allowed Dr. Phillips to see Murillo’s spinal anatomy – essentially giving him X-ray vision.“That's exactly what it is,” says Dr. Phillips. “It really is X-ray vision. Except it's not just X-ray vision, you're actually seeing the real spine through the skin.”The CT scanned images are directly projected onto the surgeon’s retina and then superimposed right on top of the patient’s surgical area.“I was just blown away,” says Dr. Phillips. “The minute I put my headset on and looked down at the spine it was like that wow moment. I was like ‘this is crazy.’”Researchers say the FDA-cleared x-vision system could revolutionize the way surgeons perform complex procedures.“It's so accurate so precise the visualization so good you can do the surgery more efficiently which obviously translates into less anesthetic time and advantages to the patient,” says Phillips. For Murillo, who eventually went pro 15 years after her accident, this latest groundbreaking surgery has her thinking about another return to competition.“I'm still looking to see if I could comeback one more time. I'm not sure. But, yeah to me it's a dream.”Augmedics, the maker of the technology says it plans to explore the x-ray vision technology beyond just spinal surgery. 2365

The video below shows how it works:For Instagram users, click on settings, ads, and ad topic preferences. The video below shows how it works:Zuckerberg said in an op-ed to USA Today, “For those of you who've already made up your minds and just want the election to be over, we hear you — so we're also introducing the ability to turn off seeing political ads. At X3 Sports, trainers have a goal of bringing out the warrior within their students by building up their cardiovascular endurance and their self-confidence.After being shut down because of COVID-19 concerns, this mixed martial arts gym in Atlanta is reopening and seeing a major increase in enrollment.“Since a lot of things have been going on in our community, it has increased at least 50% than what it was,” kickboxing coach Rica Grandison said.Grandison says more people are taking these self-defense classes and citing concerns ranging from the pandemic to the protests. She added that these students enrolling represent all races, genders and sexual orientations:“I am part of the LGBTQ community,” Grandison said.“I’ve been called the 'N' word just waiting for a bus. I’ve been called the 'D' word just hanging out with my partner, my significant other at the time,” she said. “So, I have been there.”Now the X3 coaches are sharing their championship credentials with gym members like Shannon Dunlap, who joined this gym to get stronger physically and emotionally.“I am a lot more comfortable in my body; I’m a lot more self-assured,” she said. “I don’t get nervous walking down the street.”The coaches at X3 say the more someone trains, the more muscle memory they will develop. Which means if they ever become a victim of an act of violence, it’s easier to escape that situation without things getting even more physical.“If somebody’s charging you just, just give them a push kick," Grandison said. “Push them away, knock them down, run away.”While Grandison says the best fight is a fight that never happens, she also believes it best for people to have the physical skills to defend themselves. 1714
