SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new monolith was supposed to be unveiled at a Scripps Ranch shopping center on Wednesday, but it was found destroyed hours before the introduction ceremony.Several weeks ago, a mysterious monolith appeared at the Scripps Ranch Marketplace, attracting crowds and raising questions like where it came from and who put it there.However, several days later, the monolith was removed by a group of teenagers.The theft of the monolith was disappointing for many, including Nutmeg Bakery & Café co-owner Drew Hoffus. He told ABC 10News that his business not only had a first-class view of the monolith, but it helped bring in customers.“This year has been a challenge for everyone … The landmarks helped us out a lot. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new technology platform launched this week is making it easier for restaurants, hotels, and caterers to donate food to those facing hunger in San Diego County.The new platform, MealConnect, was unveiled by Feeding San Diego. CEO Vince Hall says the free platform will help rescue the more than 14 million pounds of food going into San Diego landfills every year. "This is an issue that is compelling, it is serious, and it is urgent because hunger is debilitating," said Hall. Restaurants and food service providers use the MealConnect app to submit a food donation. It's then picked up by a volunteer and delivered to a nearby charity. Nancy Kane is one of the first San Diego volunteers to take part in the program. "It's flexible, it's not that hard to do, I can do it on my own time. I love it; it's one more thing I can do to make a difference," said Kane.Volunteers receive training and equipment to ensure food is delivered safely. They can choose their delivery hours and can accept or decline requests via text message. MealConnect enables food donors of all sizes, such as hotels, meeting and event planners, restaurants, farmers market vendors, and convenience stores to post surplus food to the system.Feeding San Diego received a ,500 grant from the Walmart Foundation to support the launch of MealConnect in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man wielding a metal chain was shot and killed by a two-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department this week, the department announced Saturday.SDPD said 48-year-old Vaugh Harrison Denham, of San Diego, was shot and killed by Officer Corey Pitts after Denham refused to obey officers' orders to drop a machete he had reportedly used to attack someone Wednesday.Police said they arrived at a violent disturbance call involving a "machete-style" weapon in the 4000 block of Boston Ave. just after 5 p.m. Police found a 57-year-old victim with injuries that suggested he'd been attacked with an "edged weapon."ORIGINAL STORY: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in SouthcrestThe victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.At the scene, police tried to contact Denham around the corner from the initial scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy sailor appeared in court Tuesday after authorities say he stole 20 hand grenades from a San Diego-based guided missile destroyer.Authorities say Gunner’s Mate Second Class Aaron Booker was taken into custody in Illinois.According to court documents, personnel assigned to the USS Pinckney discovered that 20 grenades disappeared from their storage crates in 2017.In April of 2017, an off-duty law enforcement officer noticed a black backpack leaning against a guardrail on the side of the road along Interstate 15 in northwest Arizona.The bag was standard military issue with “GM2 BOOKER” handwritten on a tag inside the bag. The bag contained 18 of the grenades that were missing from the USS Pinckney.According to authorities, law enforcement is still searching for the two missing grenades.The complaint states that Booker acknowledged to investigators that he drove the same route before reporting to his duty station in March.“A backpack full of grenades on the side of the road is obviously extremely dangerous and could have had resulted in injuries or death,” said U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman said. “The theft of explosives is a very serious offense, particularly if it is carried out by an insider with access to military weapons and secrets.”Booker will appear for a detention hearing before being transferred to San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine died Saturday night after being hit by a car in the Midway district. San Diego Police say the crash happened around 7 p.m. on the 2700 block of Midway Drive. According to police, the man in his early 20s left a bar in the area when he walked or fell onto Midway Drive before being struck by a car. Police are checking surveillance cameras in the area to identify the driver, who left after the crash. A woman who lives in the area says cars often speed on the road and that there are few places to cross the street.“Like almost a half a mile down, and so if you're gonna cross, you can either walk extra far or you can jaywalk'; a lot of people you do you see jaywalking,” Quinn Dekker told 10News. 736
