SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The 2019-2020 cruise season is officially underway in San Diego, and the Port of San Diego expects thousands of visitors to the region, having a significant economic impact on the city.The Port has 104 cruise calls scheduled, which is up from last year's numbers. Approximately 338,000 passengers will be on the cruises and Port officials say each home ported call has an average of million in economic impact."That doesn't just mean spending money on food and shopping, but that can be maintenance, repairs and things to the ship," said Adam Deaton, with the Port's cruise business development."It's a great, great uptick for San Diego's economy," said Deaton. "We're not in the summer so it's kind of the down season, so cruise is a great pick me up for the winter and fall months."The season began Tuesday with the arrival of luxury ship Le Soleal, from French Cruise company, Ponant.Also this season, Holland America, Disney Cruise, and Carnival Cruise Lines will be featured. Carnival has not been in San Diego since 2011 and its return was much anticipated.The Carnival Miracle will be at the Port starting in December for 12 trips including Mexican Riviera, Hawaiian Island, Baja Mexico and Panama Canal cruises.Starting October 4, Disney Cruise Line will offer 16 cruises from the Port of San Diego. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple is paying Intel billion for the chip maker's smartphone modem division in a deal driven by the upcoming transition to the next generation of wireless technology.The agreement announced Thursday comes three months after Apple ended a long-running dispute with one of Intel's rivals, Qualcomm. That ensured Apple would have a pipeline of chips it needs for future iPhones to work on ultrafast wireless networks known as 5G.The Apple-Qualcomm truce prompted Intel to abandon its attempts to make chips for 5G modems, effectively putting that part of its business up for grabs.Once the sale is completed later this year Apple will be picking up about 2,200 Intel employees and 17,000 wireless technology patents. Barring any complications, the deal is expected to close sometime between October and December.Apple's purchase of Intel's smartphone modem patents and other technology could bolster its attempt to build its own line 5G chips and lessen its dependence on Qualcomm. The Cupertino, California, has hammered out a licensing agreement with Qualcomm that carries through April 2025, with an option to extend for an additional two years after that.Qualcomm is a pivotal supplier in the rollout of 5G, particularly in the U.S. That's because President Donald Trump's administration has blacklisted another key 5G supplier, Huawei, as part of its trade war with China.So far, 5G connections are only available in a few cities in the U.S., but they are expected to become more prevalent by next year. The faster networks will enable consumers with 5G devices to download movies in a matter of seconds and access other streaming services more quickly.Apple isn't expected to release an iPhone that works on 5G networks until September 2020, putting it behind rivals such as Huawei and Samsung, which already make handsets that work with the faster wireless technology.The sale is a residue of Intel's inability to catch up with Qualcomm in the business of making chips for smartphone modems. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- County supervisors announced that we are just days away until San Diegans can finally relax on the beach.But some are jumping the gun.It was the announcement San Diegans were waiting for."On Tuesday, June 2, passive activities will be allowed on beaches, so long as groups stay within their household units, social distance from other non-family members, and facial coverings," San Diego County Supervisor, Greg Cox announced on Thursday.Supervisors said sitting on the sand, towels, and chairs will be allowed. But sports such as football and volleyball will continue to be prohibited. Parking lots and piers will also remain closed. However, many people seemed to forget about the start date: Tuesday, June 2.On the evening of the County announcement, a 10News viewer witnessed a graduation party in Oceanside. The photos showed a mass gathering with many people sitting on the sand, with almost no one practicing social distancing or wearing masks. "I'm sure everybody is anxious to get out with their family, sit on the beach and enjoy the nice weather," Solana Beach visitor, Labib Samarrai said. But on Saturday, most people seemed to be following the rules at Solana Beach."I think everybody is now maybe over-educated, but it's all good," Samarrai said. Lifeguards at Solana Beach and Pacific Beach say they are still focused on educating the public, instead of actively ticketing visitors who disregard the County Public Health order. "They're only telling people that are not where they want them," Pacific Beach surfer Jake Curran said. For Curran, the passive activity phase does not make much of a difference in his usual routine. San Diego (KGTV)- With no warning, a light pole came crashing down on top of a car in Pacific Beach. Neighbors are worried that what they found could shine a light on a bigger problem. “It’s really scary that you can be walking down the street and something could fall out of the sky like that,” says neighbor Kevin Payne. Payne says he was walking in the area on Saturday, along Ingraham Street and Reed Avenue when he heard the loud crash. He says a San Diego lifeguard, who was driving by, stopped to section off the area until crews arrived. The base of the pole is filled with corrosion and rust. Neighbors say to the human eye it would have been tough to spot. “You wouldn’t notice just walking by, you would need to take off the cover of the base,” says Payne. “I think once you took the cover off it would have been clear as day.”In a statement to 10News, the city didn’t pinpoint the cause of the collapse but says the light is scheduled to be replaced this week. In the meantime, city crews will assess the other lights in the area to ensure they are “functional and stable.” The owner of the damaged car was not inside at the time. (KGTV) -- After being under a federally mandated quarantine at MCAS Miramar for two weeks, Steven and Michele Smith are finally heading home to Paradise, California."Tomorrow morning we're putting our bags on the other side of that door and we're heading on a bus to the airport. We're going to rent a car and drive 600 miles home," said Steven Smith in a Skype interview with 10News.The two would have been back home weeks ago after their planned cruise to Hawaii, but due to a coronavirus outbreak on the Grand Princess cruise ship they were on, they and all other passengers had to go into quarantine once their ship finally docked in Oakland."My sister is taking care of my birds, my daughter is taking care of my dog, and then my friend is taking care of our cat," said Michele Smith.The Smiths will complete their 14-day quarantine Tuesday and drive home Wednesday. Health and Human Services officials tell us nearly 50 people quarantined at Miramar left Tuesday, and the remaining 130 people will be discharged over the next two days. For nearly two weeks, their temperatures were checked twice a day. The Smiths mostly remained inside of a room at the Consolidated Bachelor Quarters on base, had food delivered three times a day, and only stepped outside occasionally."You can go out and walk outside, they have a fenced-in area that they keep us inside of," said Steven Smith.They were tested for COVID-19 and got their results back Monday."It was just a weird test, to have somebody shove something up your nose that far back into your nasal cavity," Steven Smith explained."But we tested negative!" added an excited Michele. "So, we are virus free 100 percent."They are thrilled to be heading home healthy and say their positive attitude and sense of humor helped get them through this unusual time.Michele leaves others just starting their quarantine with this advice, "I would recommend to all the people out there, now is not the time to bring up negative things or things that could create conflict, but just to love on each other, laugh and enjoy each other." 2101
