She posted passive aggressive arguments between neighbors, people helping each other and other funny posts.However, she says she also got a lot of submissions that weighed heavy on her and highlighted what she described as racism running rampant.“I always struggled with that because I didn’t want to put that negative energy back out there, but at the same time, I feel like those stories need to be told also,” she said.Recently, Takahashi tweeted Nextdoor’s tweet saying “black lives matter” with another person's post that got taken down for the same thing. Since then, people have shared even more stories of unexplained censored or deleted similar posts.A petition was even started to get racial bias training for Nextdoor neighborhood leads or moderators, among other demands.“I did not realize how completely what a mess their lead program was,” said Takahashi. “These people don’t have any training at all.”Since all this, Nextdoor has said it will "better educate our neighbors on what is and is not allowed on the platform, drawing a firm line against racist behavior and removing comments and members who violate the rules.”Nextdoor also ended a feature that allowed users to forward their posts directly to a local police department. 1913

We're about a month into the school year and teachers are struggling to keep children up to speed amid the pandemic.We spoke with a principal at an elementary school in Arizona who says students are about five to six months behind. Some kids who should be reading by now, simply are not.She says when you think about it, most students have not been inside a classroom since March.One challenge for teachers has been teaching at-home students and giving one-on-one attention to those in the classroom. The other challenge has been technology.“It’s day to day, whether or not technology works,” said principal Sarah Lewis. “And if you think about it, we've been hybrid for about three weeks now, but before that, we were all digital learning. We would have full days where we wouldn't have any technology, so basically we would have to tell the kids, go into Google Classroom and practice your multiplication facts.”Lewis says it's tough to hear young kids are learning on their parents’ cell phones, because they don't have a computer.However, she says she's proud of how fast teachers became tech savvy, as well as the level of understanding from most parents and their willingness to be flexible. She's also proud of the kids.“Five-year-olds do not understand that you cannot go over to your friend’s desk and ask what they're reading or coloring, but as far as wearing the mask and being OK when we ask them to step away or ask them to, I mean it's incredible that little kids are able to do it,” said Lewis.Lewis says she wants people to know just how difficult it is for teachers to balance teaching online students and those in the classroom. We hear it all the time--save the bees! Well, one Colorado woman has come up with an idea that could do just that.Danielle Bilot, an instructor at the University of Colorado Boulder, created the Forgotten Hive project. The initiative aims to transform parts of parking lot spaces into rest stops for bees.“These native bees, some of them can only fly about three blocks before they need more food,” explains Bilot. “And, so, if we don't have a frequent enough system, they're going to potentially die trying to get to the next big park space.”Bilot, with the help of students involved in the project, added nearly two dozen different plants at the edge of one parking lot in Boulder. The new plants, which replaced shrubs, will hopefully give bees a place to get food year-round.Bilot says there are more than 3,600 native bee species around the country, and they're not just cool to look at.“They are more efficient pollinators for crops than the honeybees we often think of,” says Bilot.Bilot visits the lot at least once a week to observe the bees and to take note of how they’re responding to the plants.“If some of them aren't attracting native bees, and we're not catching them on them, we won't plant them in the next lot,” Bilot says.The instructor hopes to spread the word and to spread hives to parking lots around her city, the country and the world.“We're looking at a large amount of urban land that can be converted into productive green space for a variety of benefits,” says Bilot. “What city wouldn't want to do that?” 1548

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of immigrants in the U.S. without legal status has declined to its lowest level in more than a decade, according to a new report released Tuesday.The nonpartisan Pew Research Center said 10.7 million immigrants lacked legal status in 2016, down from 11 million a year earlier and from a peak of 12.2 million in 2007 before the U.S. economy slumped.It is the lowest number since 2004, the report said.The decline stems largely from a drop in the number of Mexican immigrants living in the U.S. illegally to 5.5 million in 2016 from nearly 7 million in 2007. Some returned to their country to reunite with family, while others were deported.During the same period, the number of immigrants from Central America without legal status increased to nearly 1.9 million from 1.5 million.The report comes as the Trump administration has cracked down on immigration and bolstered security on the Southwest border, where thousands of Central American families have arrived to seek asylum.The report is based on U.S. Census Bureau data.
