SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a mother was drunk and driving her children when she crashed going the wrong way on a Rancho Bernardo street Monday morning.The crash happened about 4:30 a.m. on Camino del Norte, just west of Interstate 15. The woman drove her Chevy SUV east in the westbound lanes of the road, hitting a man in a Jeep Liberty.Officers told 10News the mother, who is in her 30s, had her 8-year-old child in the backseat with her 2-year-old child in a car seat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released details Friday about the controversial arrest of a man and woman in Chicano Park involving use of force. Georgina Mercado, 35, interfered with a traffic stop being conducted Thursday, police said. Her three children, ages eight, seven, and four, were with her at the time. 22-year-old Eddie Alvarez arrived on scene with another woman who said they would take custody of the three children, according to SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi. Alvarez wore a bandana over his face and refused to identify himself, police said. Officers “could not release the children to the custody of Alvarez without knowing who he was,” said police. “This contact escalated to the point that officers arrested Alvarez for interfering,” Takeuchi wrote in a news release. Police said Alvarez refused to put his hands behind his back and struggled with officers. “Officers used strikes while they forcefully moved his arms behind his back,” police said. Alvarez was handcuffed and taken to jail. “Anytime force is used, we take it extremely seriously. We have initiated an internal investigation into the force that was used last night,” Takeuchi said. Hours after the arrest, dozens of people gathered outside the San Diego Central Jail downtown to demand Alvarez’ release. The group said Alvarez had been recording the arrest of Mercado, who they described as a community activist. One demonstrator said, “While he (Alvarez) was filming police, they came out and told him to stop recording. He said, ‘No, I don’t feel safe, I’m going to keep recording, especially with my girlfriend right here with the kids,’ and they didn’t like that … The cops ended up jumping him and rushed him to the ground and started punching him in the ribs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University has suspended over a dozen fraternities after a student who attended a reported fraternity event was hospitalized this week with unknown injuries.SDSU President Adela de la Torre suspended Interfraternity Council (IFC) activities citing the "severity of the incident" following the alleged fraternity event Wednesday night, a statement from the school read."Given the severity of this incident, and as the safety and wellbeing of students is a primary concern of the university, SDSU President Adela de la Torre has suspended the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and all chapter organizations under the council," an SDSU media relations officer said Friday.SDSU clarified Saturday that a campus fraternity is "alleged to have been involved in possible misconduct" in the Wednesday event.Prior to Wednesday, the school says six IFC organizations were under suspension and four were under investigation, leading to de la Torre's decision. The suspension affects all 14 IFC fraternities with more than 1,400 members. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — She's a pre-med student at UCSD with hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon, and for the last year-and-a-half, Shea Cruise has been homeless.Like so many on the UCSD campus, the senior's plate is pretty full. The neuroscience student has a rigorous course load."I was taking 20 units this quarter, full time is 12," said Cruise, 23.But her studies aren't the only thing occupying her thoughts. When classes are over and she's finished her shift as a server, Cruise must figure out where she's going to sleep.She calls her 2006 Ford Focus home. She's parked it in store lots, near the beach and in campus parking structures overnight. She qualifies for some financial aid but it's enough to cover her tuition. Shortly after transferring to the school two summers ago from Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, she decided to live in her car to save money. "I shower in the gym on campus," said Cruise.Cruise also borrows her textbooks — whatever it takes. "This was something I had to do to reach my goals. Something I was willing to sacrifice," said Cruise. Then, four weeks ago came an unexpected medical diagnosis, which will force her to take leave from her job for appointments and treatment.Cruise started a Gofundme campaign to help with tuition and other expenses, at the same time revealing a truth few on campus were aware of."It's an invisible population. Speaking about it hopefully will bring more light not to me but others in my position," said Cruise.As for her academic position, she currently has a 3.8 GPA and is determined to graduate this June."I don't look at my situation as a victim. I look at it as a lesson. It teaches me to be more empathetic toward other people. That was certainly the case in San Diego County on Halloween night, when surveillance video captured trick-or-treaters behaving badly.“Frustrating and really disappointing,” said Eastlake resident K.C. Helman.Helman returned home from trick-or-treating with his kids Thursday night to find his candy bowl gone.Video showed two costumed kids walking up to the bowl. One of them grabbed it and they both ran away.It wasn’t the only trick on Halloween night. 10News gathered a collection of videos posted by residents victimized by some frightful behavior.The candy thieves are a far cry from the generous South Bay boy who was caught on camera in 2017 pouring his own candy into an empty bowl so other children wouldn't be disappointed.Lawrence Malot, then 15, explained what motivated him to share his candy.He's not the only good example in San Diego.
