SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man under arrest was hospitalized Sunday night after San Diego Police said he slipped out of his handcuffs and got a hold of an officer's gun, leading to an officer-involved shooting at the department's downtown headquarters.According to police, a 25-year-old Hispanic man was arrested shortly after 6:20 p.m. after an incident at a downtown San Diego hotel. A hotel security guard reported the man was “acting strange” and threatening others.Officers took the man to SDPD headquarters on 1401 Broadway, but just after 8 p.m. police said the man somehow freed himself from his handcuffs while inside the patrol SUV, and then broke a divider that separates the prisoner seat area from the cargo area.Police said it was in the cargo area were the man located an officer’s backpack that contained a backup handgun.Officers went to check on the arrestee after hearing noise and saw that he was still in the vehicle but armed with a gun. Officers drew their weapons but backed up from the car.Police said, “Officers gave the male commands to drop the weapon, but he refused to do so. The male fired at least one round from the handgun.”The officers felt threatened at that point, prompting them to fire at least one round, hitting the man at least once in the torso.According to police, “The male reached out the car window, opened the door and exited the patrol vehicle. He was still armed with the handgun and would not comply with officers’ directions. The male tried to open both the rear cargo compartment and the driver’s door of the patrol vehicle, despite officers’ orders to stop. Because he still posed a threat, a Police Service Dog was deployed on the male. The canine bit the male and officers were able to approach and subdue him. The male was still armed with the handgun at the time of his arrest.”After officers provided aid to the man at the scene, he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.SDPD’s Homicide Unit is investigating the officer-involved shooting.Police stated the following information in a news release:“The names of the officers involved in this incident are not being released at this time, but they have been with the department for 8 years, 6 years and 10 months, respectively.The investigation and review process for an officer-involved shooting is extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes their investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers. The Community Review Board on Police Practices will conduct a review of the incident and provide any appropriate recommendations. According to Zillow, million in San Diego can buy a single-family home that has 2,410 square feet, four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. Families in Chula Vista can get more for their money, where million can buy a 3,890 square foot home with five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. On a slightly lighter note, million can typically buy a 1,900 square foot, three bedroom, two bathroom home in Los Angeles, Zillow reports. In the U.S., the typical million home is a detached single-family house with about 2,200 square feet with four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A La Jolla hardware store is being forced to remove their popcorn machine they say was used to give the buttery treat to customers for free over the last 25 years.According to a food inspection report, the Meanley and Son Hardware on the 7700 block of Girard was investigated for serving popcorn without a permit."Everybody has had fun with this until now, but we have to obey the law," said co-owner Bob Meanley.One of the store's owners says the inspection happened after someone complained.A customer reportedly saw another person reach into the popcorn machine barehanded."I’m sorry we can’t continue with the popcorn, but we’ll do it with everything else," added Meanley.In the report, the inspector said the small Gold Medal brand popcorn maker was seen in use and with “popped popcorn prepared.”The report forces the hardware store to stop making popcorn and to remove the popcorn machine from the building.If the shop wants to give away popcorn, according to the health department, they’ll have to go through the permitting process. A process which will also legally require that the store install three compartment sinks. The store says staff regularly cleaned the machine and refilled it with popcorn throughout the day for customers to enjoy.The hardware shop has an extensive history in La Jolla. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat caught fire Sunday around 2:45 p.m. at Shelter Cove Marina, witnesses say a lithium battery in the navigation panel started the blaze."Saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react," Boater and Witness Charlie Colson said. He said he grabbed a hose and was helping the father who was on the boat when the fire started. Getting a boat fire put out quickly is crucial, Witness and Boater Murad Abel said. "There's a lot of electrical equipment, you have batteries, you have fuel, propane, it's all probably within 10 feet of each other," he said.Colson said they had it under control by the time firefighters made it to the scene. "The nine minutes probably seemed like 27 to me, because I was putting the fire out, and I wanted some help, I wanted a professional there," He said chuckling.He said the family had just moved onto the boat last week. Both confirmed the family has a special needs son, adored by the community. "You could literally come back 2 hours later and he's still fishing trying to get fish off the back of the boat, so he's very diligent in that," Abel said.They're hoping insurance covers the damage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A political kingmaker is using his fortune to shake up the San Diego race for District Attorney.The first television ads are hitting airwaves now, little more than a month before the election.The element of surprise surrounds the tone of an ad paid for by billionaire George Soros. He’s known for backing progressive candidates and shaking up elections, usually with controversial ads.The ad lays out Geneviéve Jones Wright’s qualifications to be San Diego County’s next District Attorney. It does not attack her opponent Summer Stephan, which is what most politicos expected.Jones Wright told 10News she had not seen the ad.Stephan’s campaign manager said he’s surprised the ad is more of an introduction than an attack. Jason Roe also said there is no doubt in his mind the gloves will come off, based on what he called Soros’ pattern of negative and dishonest ads.Jones Wright filed a complaint with the attorney general claiming Stephan was basically campaigning on the job and using photo ops with law enforcement in her campaign materials.Stephan’s campaign manager called it a distraction. 1128
