SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Department of Homeland Security is responding to the caravan of Central American immigrants prepared to enter the United States through the border with Mexico.At least 600 people from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua are traveling to Tijuana, according to freelance journalist Jorge Nieto. About 100 arrived last night. Eventually the group will enter the U.S. at the San Ysidro port of entry.Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen released a statement on the caravan.“DHS continues to monitor the remnants of the ‘caravan’ of individuals headed to our Southern border with the apparent intention of entering the United States illegally. A sovereign nation that cannot – or worse, chooses not – to defend its borders will soon cease to be a sovereign nation. The Trump Administration is committed to enforcing our immigration laws – whether persons are part of this ‘caravan’ or not.”DHS warned members of the caravan that they may be turned over for prosecution under illegal entry laws. Anyone seeking asylum may be detained while their claims are processed, DHS said.“Again, if you enter the United States illegally, let me be clear: you have broken the law. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The County of San Diego filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the heads of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, calling for the reinstatement of the “Safe Release” program and reimbursement for the cost of treating a recent influx of asylum seekers. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Ronald D. Vitiello, Immigrant and Customs Enforcement Executive Associate Director Matthew T. Albence, Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Kevin K. McAleenan, and Chief of Border Patrol Carla L. Provost are named in the lawsuit. The lawsuit claims the county has been harmed as a result of what it describes as a “sudden and unlawful change” in policy, releasing asylum-seeking migrants from federal detention into the county while “denying them previously-provided assistance in reaching their final destination(s) outside the County.” RELATED: Reaction: County of San Diego sues federal agency chiefs over asylum seeker careFrom 2009 to October 2018, ICE implemented a policy described in the lawsuit as “Safe Release”, which provided asylum seekers assistance in reaching final destinations outside San Diego, attorneys say. The aid came in the form of phone calls and transportation to other areas of the U.S. ICE officials said the policy ended last fall due to limited resources to support the program, according to the suit. The lawsuit claims some 40 asylum seekers and family members were dropped off at a San Diego bus station within 24 hours after the end of Safe Release. County attorneys say since then, as many as 80 parents and young children have been released into San Diego County each day. County attorneys wrote the vast majority of asylum seekers and family members must remain in the area without sufficient means to support themselves. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The escalation in Iran is stirring up terrifying memories for the family of a San Diego man, held there for more than a year during one of the most intense hostage standoffs in history."I was trying to get information. All I had heard from the State Department was that the embassy had been overrun," said Dotty Morefield, whose husband, Richard, was one of 52 people taken hostage in Iran in November 1979. "I picked up the phone and thought if anyone was going to know it would be the news agency, and Brad picked up."It's been more than 40 years since Morefield picked up the phone and called 10News for the first time. 10News assignment editor Brad McLellan picked up the phone."Mrs. Morefield told me her husband had just been taken hostage in Iran and I was shocked. I didn't know what to say," McLellan recalls. "I have to face the fears. The uncertainties and the worries. It kept me very busy and it kept me informed."Day in and day out, Morefield made sure the hostages were kept in the spotlight. Finally after 444 days, the hostages were released."I was just I was beyond excited," Morefield said. And here, Morefield and her kids — and a sea of supporters — celebrated her husband's return."He was stunned," Morefield said. "There were people from Lindbergh Field to the townhouse I was renting in Tierrasanta. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a missing Arizona grandmother believes that she may be heading to San Diego.On Monday, ABC10 News spoke to Aaron Richardson about his grandmother, Alice Fults, who was last seen on Friday morning in Chandler, Arizona. "You'd never think this would happen to you and for it to happen and [to] somebody you know totally tears you apart," he told ABC10 News.On Monday afternoon, Chandler Police confirmed that the 58-year-old stroke survivor and dementia patient got on a Greyhound bus on Friday morning that was bound for Los Angeles.Her family says that she could be trying to get to San Diego which is where she grew up and where her sister still lives. "She's from Lakeside so she always talked about Lakeside, California and how she wanted to go back to Lakeside," said Richardson.Fults has hearts with names tattooed on her legs and horseshoes tattooed on her arms. She has a drooping eyelid from her stroke and needs her seizure medication. Her family told ABC10 News that she left with her granddaughter's ID but not her own ID. She doesn't have a cell phone. Family added that she has a history of wandering off but never for more than a few hours."If you see this, Alice...I love you, grandma. Get some help, okay? Let us know you're okay," Richardson added.Chandler Police have issued a silver alert and are working on notifying law enforcement in Southern California about her disappearance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego's Development Services division is still investigating the platform that collapsed at a Barrio Logan gym this weekend and injured 21 minors and a few adults. At least one minor is still in the hospital with a broken pelvis, we're told.A city spokesperson reported to 10 News on Tuesday that no further details would be released until the investigation is complete.On Monday, the spokesperson said there were definite code violations and missing permits at Vault PK parkour gym, where the incident happened. Whether the gym will face any penalties is still unknown. The gym has only been open for a few months. On a Facebook post, it appears much of the construction of the facility was done by the owner's immediate family.  On Monday, San Diego Police Department's media relations division confirmed that the incident is a civil matter and the department will not be recommending any criminal charges, including criminal negligence.  There is another Vault PK parkour gym in Torrance. We called the facility today. Someone answered the phone and said the facility is closed for inspections. No further details were given.  1222
