SAN DIEGO — San Diegans can participate in AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine trial, which recently showed 90 percent effectiveness under a certain dosage.AstraZeneca announced Monday that its vaccine was 90 percent effective when participants started with a half dose, followed by a full dose at least four weeks later. It is currently seeking participants through UC San Diego Health and other partners for its ongoing trials. Full doses given four weeks apart were 62 percent effective in the trial. “These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives," said Professor Andrew Pollard, Chief Investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial, in a statement released by AstraZeneca. "Excitingly, we’ve found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90 percent effective and if this dosing regime is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply."Elana Godebu, a UC San Diego urologist, said she has seen the impacts of Coronavirus firsthand. She is currently practicing at El Centro Regional Medical Center, affiliated with UC San Diego. She says the center is filling up because of a rise in local cases and patients coming up from Mexico. The state recently built a 50-bed tent in the parking lot for non-Covid patients. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 28-year-old man was hospitalized Monday with non- life-threatening wounds to his leg and hand after he was shot by another man in a parking lot near Mission Bay, police said.The shooting happened around 7:10 p.m. Sunday in a parking lot in the 2600 block of Ingraham Street, north of West Mission Bay Drive, San Diego police Sgt. Kevin Gibson said.The 28-year-old man was standing alone in the parking lot when another man approached him and fired five shots, striking the victim in the leg and the hand, Gibson said.The victim was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, the sergeant said.No detailed suspect description was immediately available.One person was detained at the scene and later arrested on unrelated charges, Gibson said. The nature of those charges was not disclosed.Detectives from the San Diego Police Department's special operations unit were investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting. 1027

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 77-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured this afternoon by being struck by a car that was involved in a collision with another vehicle in La Jolla.The collision occurred at the intersection of La Jolla Boulevard and Nautilus Street, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.A 76-year-old man drove his Toyota Prius into the intersection during a red light and broadsided a Ford F150, which was driven by a 63-year-old man and had entered the intersection on a green light, Heims said.The Ford rotated and struck the pedestrian on the southwest corner of Nautilus Street and La Jolla Boulevard, according to Heims.The pedestrian sustained a Tibia/Fibula fracture in his left leg and other serious injuries, Heims said. The Toyota's driver sustained a minor cut on his face, and the Ford's driver was not injured.The San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division is investigating the crash, but drugs or alcohol is not suspected, according to Heims. 1008
