SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Lemon Grove man who aimed a laser pointer at a San Diego police helicopter during a police protest this summer is facing a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison following his conviction by a federal jury, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Thursday.Rudy Alvarez, 25, was found guilty by a jury in San Diego federal court late Wednesday for shining a laser at the SDPD chopper around 8:30 p.m. June 4 in the area of 500 University Ave.The U.S. Attorney's Office said Alvarez shined the laser at the chopper multiple times over the course of an hour as he marched with protesters through downtown San Diego.The count of aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison and a 0,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 22.U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer called the result "a very important verdict" and said "This kind of crime could have a disastrous impact if a pilot's sight is compromised. We support the Constitutional rights of free speech and assembly, but the rule of law must be respected. It's there for a reason -- to protect the public and law enforcement from danger."Earlier this year, the U.S. Attorney's Office also charged San Diego resident Stephen Glenn McLeod with the same count for allegedly directing a laser at a San Diego Police Department chopper multiple times during a protest on Aug. 28. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An SUV struck and killed a 63-year-old woman as she was crossing a street in the Talmadge area, police said Tuesday.It happened around 5 p.m. Monday in the 4600 block of El Cajon Boulevard, between 46th and 47th streets, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 79-year-old man was driving a 2008 Lexus SUV westbound on El Cajon Boulevard near Menlo Avenue when he struck the pedestrian as she was attempting to cross El Cajon Boulevard southbound outside a crosswalk, Buttle said.The woman was trapped under the SUV before crews freed her and took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the officer said. The victim's name was withheld pending family notification.The SUV driver remained at the scene and intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash, Buttle said. 824

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorcyclist died Sunday in a head-on collision with a truck in the San Pasqual neighborhood, police said.The accident happened at 1:41 p.m. when a 65-year-old man riding a 2020 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling east in the 18000 block of San Pasqual Valley Road crossed over the double yellow line and hit a 1997 Ford 250 driven by an 88-year-old man traveling west, according to Officer John Buttle of the San Diego Police Department.The motorcyclist died and the driver of the Ford and his passenger were taken to the hospital.Traffic Division is investigating the collision. 609

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman who had more than three times the legal blood-alcohol limit when she crashed her SUV head-on into another vehicle while driving her three young daughters through Rancho Bernardo pleaded guilty Friday to felony child abuse and drunk driving charges. Mayra Alejandra Troncoso, 30, had a .29 percent blood-alcohol content when she drove on the wrong side of Camino del Norte on Nov. 12, 2018. Her SUV crashed head-on into an oncoming 2011 Jeep Liberty, causing severe injuries -- including a skull fracture and a brain bleed -- to her 9-month-old daughter, who was riding unrestrained. The defendant's 2-year-old daughter suffered facial injuries and her 8-year-old child broke a bone. The 57-year-old driver of the other car suffered broken bones, authorities said. Prosecutors say that at the time of the crash, she was on probation and driving on a suspended license due to a 2017 North County DUI, in which she also crashed with at least one of her children in the vehicle. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Riverside County woman is facing a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a 0,000 fine for smuggling 20 containers of an unregistered Mexican pesticide across the border into the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego.Veronica Perez, 40, of Hemet, was convicted Wednesday following a three-day jury trial in San Diego federal court for concealing zinc phosphide in her purse as she attempted to cross the U.S.-Mexico border on July 11, 2019.Ingestion of small amounts of zinc phosphide, which is used to kill rats, mice and other small animals, can cause death in humans, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which says seven drops to one teaspoon of the chemical "would likely kill a 150-pound person."Special Agent in Charge Scot Adair of the EPA's Criminal Investigation Division in California said, "The pesticides involved in this case pose serious public health and environmental dangers. The verdict in this case demonstrates that individuals who intentionally violate smuggling and environmental protection laws will be held responsible for their crimes."A sentencing date was not immediately announced. 1192
