NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Tennessee woman is calling for more oversight on the U.S. Small Business Administration loan program, saying it has made people an easy target for thieves.Pat Golab has been following the trail left behind by the people responsible for stealing her identity back in August. The last time she spoke about what happened, she shared that she was approved for the SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). Not only did Golab not apply, but she doesn't have a business of her own.In the months that followed, Golab filed three reports with the SBA and the Office of the Attorney General. She finally managed to get her hands on a copy of the application and says what she found should put others on alert.Thieves used her name, address, and social security number to apply for the ,000 loan, but left virtually everything else blank.Simple questions like ethnicity, gender, and veteran status went ignored. Golab says that should have been a red flag, but it only got worse from there.“Things like, how long have you been in business? Nothing,” said Golab.Questions on prior business history and bankruptcies were left blank. These thieves claimed 12 employees were working, but also say they plan to retain none.“The application never should have been approved,” Golab said.So why was a program designed to help businesses keep their employee, paying out thousands of dollars to businesses who don’t plan on retaining anyone? That’s the question Golab has yet to have answered.“I looked on the SBA’s website on how to complete the application and one of the first things it says is every question must be answered. If not, the application will be returned and you’ll come back and you’ll start at the bottom. Which was not what they did at all,” Golab said.The loan in Golab’s name has been deferred, but she still gets letters from the SBA saying they need her to make 0 payments each month to cover the accruing interest.We contacted the SBA once again on Monday and they tell us they can’t speak in detail about individual claims.They issued this statement:“The SBA Office of Inspector General and the agency’s federal partners are working diligently to resolve Economic Injury Disaster Loan and PPP fraud incidents.Additionally, the SBA does not comment on individual borrowers. Evidence of waste, fraud, and abuse with any of SBA’s loan programs is not tolerated and should be reported.”Douglas Schmidt is a professor of computer science at Vanderbilt University and says cybercriminals are expanding their operations around the country. This makes it even more challenging to catch them in the act, and almost impossible if they are beyond the jurisdiction of local and state law enforcement.With how fast federal officials had to roll out money for unemployment programs and the SBA loans, Schmidt says it makes sense why some applications like those filed in Golab’s name could slip through the cracks.“It’s a growing problem. It's a problem that is only solved by education,” Schmidt said.If they haven’t tried already, Schmidt says thieves will send phishing emails and or calls, claiming to be one of these agencies you trust. Whatever you do, do not fall for it.Pay close attention to the email address or phone number. If you’re at all skeptical about who you’re talking to, try calling the agency back yourself to verify if they made the call in the first place.Around the holiday season, thieves will also try and use the names of people close to you. They may give you a story about a relative falling on hard time needing money. The same advice applies again. Try contacting the relative yourself, to avoid sending money to someone you do not know.Thieves may also try and convince you that your Amazon package is delayed and they need more information to verify where to send it. MILWAUKEE —The Milwaukee County Zoo welcomed another brand new baby giraffe to their family this month.According to the Milwaukee County Zoo, the new female calf was born one week ago to mother Marlee, and dad, Bahatika. This marks the second offspring for Marlee, and the fourth for Bahatika. The new giraffe joins young male, Kazi, the most recent giraffe born at the Zoo in September 2017.Zoo doctors say the calf weighed about 174 pounds and was approximately 6 feet 1 inch tall during her first exam.Zookeepers and medical staff have been monitoring the mother and her baby.  They say Marlee appears very calm and attentive to the calf, who is nursing regularly.Marlee is 6 yearsold, and arrived at the Milwaukee County Zoo in 2013 from Zoo Miami. Bahatika is 12-years-old and arrived in Milwaukee in 2006 from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado.The Zoo currently houses six giraffe: adults Bahatika, Marlee, Ziggy, Rahna; youngster Kazi; and the newborn. 986

NASCAR and the FBI said on Tuesday that investigators have completed an investigation and determined that driver Bubba Wallace was not the target of a hate crime.The racing circuit said that video from NASCAR given to the FBI concluded that a rope fashioned like a noose had been hanging from Wallace’s garage since as early as last fall. But the garage had not been used since a race in 2019."The FBI learned that garage number 4, where the noose was found, was assigned to Bubba Wallace last week.," said US Attorney Jay E Town and FBI Special Agent Johnnie Sharp in a joint statement. "The investigation also revealed evidence, including authentic video confirmed by NASCAR, that the noose found in garage number 4 was in that garage as early as October 2019. Although the noose is now known to have been in garage number 4 in 2019, nobody could have known Mr. Wallace would be assigned to garage number 4 last week."NASCAR President Steve Phelps told reporters that NASCAR will continue its own investigation.“I want to be clear about the 43 team – the 43 team had nothing to do with this,” Phelps said. “The evidence is very clear that the noose that was in that garage had been in the garage previously. The last race we’d had there in October, that noose was present, and the fact that it was not found until a member of the 43 team came there is something that is a fact.“We had not been back to the garage. It was a quick one-day show. The crew member went back in there, he looked at - he saw the noose, brought it to the attention of his crew chief, who then went to the NASCAR series director Jay Fabian and we launched this investigation. To be clear, we would do this again. The evidence that we had, it was clear we needed to look into this."Wallace's crew reported on Sunday finding a noose hanging from a garage stall at Talladega Superspeedway. MINERAL WELLS, Texas – A young bull rider has died after being bucked off a bull during a competition in Texas.Rowdy Lee Swanson of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday due to injuries sustained while competing at the Palo Pinto County Livestock Association’s PRCA Rodeo in Mineral Wells, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rowdy Swanson at the ProRodeo in Mineral Wells, Texas,” PRCA CEO George Taylor said. “The hearts of the entire rodeo community go out to Rowdy’s family in this tragic time. We will continue to keep Rowdy and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”The 20-year-old was a student at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and was studying animal sciences.Swanson was part of the university’s rodeo team. NATIONAL CITY, Calif., (KGTV) -- National City Police needs your help in locating a missing man. 35-year-old Melvin Ray Lachica was last seen at the Aloha Village Apartments on East 9th and Palm Avenue in National City on August 13, 2019. The Marine Veteran is 5'6'' tall, about 170 lbs, and has a skin-colored old scar on his forehead. Lachica's family says he suffers from PTSD. Family and fellow former Marines searched for Lachica in the Mission Trails area Saturday, hoping to locate him there. However, they did not find him.
